opportunity to explore how this best fits with your present teaching practice and classroom context. You may

‐ How do I use Documentation to make learning visible?
‐ How to begin inquiry/project based learning in my class?
Each participant will receive a relevant professional resource to support a particular area of inquiry and
exploration. You will have time to share your questions/understandings and things you have tried in your practice
with other colleagues. "Can't we have teaching and learning that include wonder, ethics, beauty, pleasure, and

CATCHING READERS BEFORE THEY FALL CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION – GOING DEEPER WITH NEW TOPICS
Look and Listen/Reflect and Teach
Careful observations are needed when assessing children who struggle learning to read. On‐going assessments
must drive our instructional decisions so that we can tailor our teaching to the specific needs of those readers.
How can you tell if a child is self‐monitoring, predicting, searching and gathering, linking, maintaining fluency, and
so much more? And once you discover what a child needs, how do you teach for that? Pat will share how we can
all become better observers so that we can plan our small group work.
Supporting Students with Word Solving
If your goal is to have children solve words flexibly and fluently as they read and write, then what kind of word
work best supports this? Join Pat in thinking about word work in appropriate doses and appropriate ways. This
session includes:
getting readers to use all their sources of information when solving words
understanding the principles of how words work
teaching beyond word families
building high frequency words
incorporating word work throughout your day; and more.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF STEP (SACY) – A SAMPLER
This one day session of the program for adults who utilize STEP for youth participants is being offered by SACY’s Teen Engagement Program –STEP.
Secondary counsellors and others often ask if they could sit in and observe what happens in the STEP portable. For instance educators want to know how the program is run, what content is presented, and what activities are conducted during the three days. Educators ask what happens at STEP if it isn't all about drugs and is not counseling or therapy. This workshop is an opportunity to experience a day at the STEP Program‐ a day of strength‐based alcohol and drug prevention.
The SACY (www.vsb.bc.ca/SACY ) Teen Engagement Program (S.T.E.P.) is a structured, three‐day program that incorporates education, information, visioning and skill building. The long‐term goal of S.T.E.P. is to have students attend school and school‐related events drug‐free. The specific learning outcomes of S.T.E.P. are: ‐ Increased understanding of the impact of alcohol and other drugs on youth development ‐ Enhanced capacity to determine the pros and cons of alcohol and drug use ‐ Increased awareness of interests and passions ‐ Increased awareness of personal values ‐ Development of action plans and ally building

MINDUP™ PROGRAM TRAININGAbout MindUP™ The research‐based MindUP™ program offers engaging, science‐based and easy to implement lessons to help students in Pre‐Kindergarten through 8th grade develop essential social and emotional skills such as self‐awareness and self‐regulation that they need to be more engaged in learning. MindUP™ is a CASEL “SELect” Program, meaning it meets the highest standards for social and emotional learning (see www.casel.org).
MindUP™ was developed by The Hawn Foundation in collaboration with leading researchers and practitioners in neuroscience, positive psychology, and social emotional learning, and piloted and tested by school educators. foster a cohesive, caring classroom climate that enhances learning.
About the MindUP™ Workshop Participants in the MindUP™ Workshop will learn about the program’s concepts and the 15 lesson plans; participate in several lesson activities; learn strategies for implementing MindUP™ in their classrooms and schools; and explore ways to incorporate the MindUP™ concepts into existing lesson plans. ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
EMBEDDED FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT (FOR REFERENCE ONLY; REGISTRATION HAS PASSED)
This book club focuses on learning from Embedded Formative Assessment by Dylan Wiliam.
This comprehensive resource draws on over 30 years’ worth of experience and research. It is very helpful in clarifying what is meant by the term “formative assessment”, a popular education buzzword, and provides useful examples of how teachers can and do embed it in their practice.

Spirals of Inquiry is a handbook organized to provide you with specific inquiry tools, research
evidence and examples from practice in BC schools. You will read arguments for the importance of

districts across the province, and do not hit us with a stick if we are not all doing it yet.
