Courses for Primary Language Teachers

Integrating languages across the curriculum, Thursday 28 June 10-4pm. One of the frequent challenges to building an effective Primary Languages curriculum is finding curriculum time. Building an integrated approach to teach ing languages not only solves this problem but also allows teachers and pupils to explore learning in an innovative, creative and challenging way. It also gives pupils real purposes for their learning which is not only highly motivating but can boost achievement and improve behaviour. The integrated approach also enables gifted and talented learners to demonstrate learning at higher levels without being restricted by a developing grasp of the language taught. Trainer: Pippa Jacobs

Teaching grammar and sentence building in Key Stage 2, Wednesday 11 July 10-4pm. The course aims to help practitioners to understand how grammar and sentence-building can be taught in French in Key Stage 2. The course will include a rationale for selecting vocabulary in Key Stage 2 and will look at how we can provide opportunities to practise using vocabulary in lessons. Delegates will be introduced to speaking and writing frames and will learn how we can develop sentence-level knowledge across the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Examples of planning from the Catherine Cheater Schemes of Work will be shown. Trainer: Catherine Cheater

Student Voice, Thursday 14 June 4-6pm. The course will provide delegates with strategies to allow their students the opportunity to use more target language in class, as well as helping their students react more confidently to unfamiliar and unpredictable language, which is an area of focus by Ofsted. Trainer: Liz Fotheringham

Courses for Secondary Language Teachers

Courses for Primary and SecondaryTeachersMotivation and Language Learn-ing, Tuesday 12 June 10-4pm. With the introduction of the Ebacc and schools becoming increasingly eager to persuade pupils to study a language at Key Stage 4 and with employers desperate to recruit people with good language and communication skills, this course is relevant for all practitioners looking for strategies to help motivate their students to want to continue to learn languages. This course is aimed at teachers from both primary and secondary phases. Trainer: Anne Farren

Accelerating Language Learn-ing Using Phonics, Tuesday 19 June 10-4pm. With pronunciation, intonation and speaking more fluently being an area of focus by Ofsted, this course enables delegates to better understand what is meant by phonics and the sound-spelling link and provides a wealth of phonics resources and ideas for use in class. The course will introduce delegates to phonics (code breaking in the foreign language) and also al-low delegates to find out about how new technologies, mostly available free on the Internet, can encourage learners to take part in more speaking activities inside and outside of the classroom.Trainer: Suzi Bewell

Courses for Post-16 teachers

Get inspired, create and share with social media, Tuesday 26 June 10-4pm. With a wealth of online resources, communities and tools out there, knowing how to use social media to its advantage is a useful skill for any practitioner to have. This is a hands-on and practical course for those who wish to tap in to social media to help enhance the teaching and learning process and add creativity to the classroom.Trainer: Joe Dale

Raising the Bar at Key Stage 4, Tuesday 3 July 10-4pm. The GCSE has undergone massive changes in the last two years, providing students with more flexibility than ever and more chances to succeed. This has brought about differences in teaching and learning required in Key Stage 4 and caused teachers to re-evaluate their practice during these vital two years. With speaking and writing now worth 30% each, the emphasis for teaching and learning has changed. This course will demonstrate how standards can be raised throughout GCSE to ensure maximum success for all.Trainer: Pauline Sheath

How to jazz up conventional topics and themes at Key Stage 3 and 4, Thursday 5 July 10- 4-pm. A strong link exists between contexts for learning and motivation: in research, KS3-4 students often explain that in MFL lessons they much prefer discover-ing new world knowledge to discuss-ing their bedrooms or pretending to be buying vegetables. This raises two questions for busy teachers wishing to review their schemes of work: how to enhance existing topics and themes and how to han-dle the resource and methodology implications.Trainer: Martine Pillette

Leading Languages, Raising Achievement, Friday 13 July 10-4pm. Languages have under-gone a period of unprecedented change over the last decade, from an era where GCSE languages were compulsory to the current time in which the introduction of the Ebacc means more schools are looking at ways to promote languages and increase uptake at GCSE. The role of the subject leader can be a difficult one, juggling the needs of pupils and managing a department whilst doing everything possible to recruit learners for Key Stage 4. You will leave the course with a whole host of activities and resources to help make the case for languages.Trainer: Wendy Adeniji

Progress through enterprise: Languages, Enterprise and Employability, Tuesday 17 July 10-4pm. With the Ebacc and more schools wanting to increase up-take of languages at GCSE and making the case for languages, this course is an opportunity for delegates to look at how languages are used in the workplace and by local companies to improve competitiveness. Delegates will have the opportunity to explore ways of identifying and engaging with local businesses.Trainer: Juliet Park

Developing independence, developing learners: Facing transition from Key Stage 4 to post-16, Monday 16 July 4-6pm. The new A-level has brought about huge changes in the last two years and provided teachers with fresh challenges, one of which is to enable students to adapt to the demands of a new course and build on and develop their skills and independence. This course is designed to look at approaches to develop independence and smooth the transition from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5.Trainer: Juliet Park

twilight courses £35. Lunch, refreshments and materials to take home on a USB stick, included in the price.
