Please answer the following questions completely but concisely, limiting the proposal itself to two pages.

1. What professional development (PD) activity are you proposing?*

I would like to attend the International Meeting on the Molecular Biology of Hepatitis B Viruses. This is the leading conference on the molecular biology of hepatitis B virus (HBV), which is the focus of research in our lab. Approximately 250 researchers from all over the world attend this 4-day conference, and the most current unpublished findings in the field are presented. It allows me to discuss my research with other researchers that are well versed in this field. This meeting is also an opportunity to learn about research findings that can directly impact my own research All abstracts will be considered for presentation, either oral or poster. If I attend this meeting I plan to submit an abstract of my research and request a slot for an oral presentation. If my abstract is chosen for an oral presentation, I will also present a poster form of my talk at the meeting (which has been encouraged in the past few years of this meeting.) If my abstract is not chosen as an oral presentation, I will present my data as a poster only. The URL for this year’s meeting is: http://www.hepb.org/hbvmeeting/index.html. 2. Why are you interested in pursuing this PD experience? As an Asst. Researcher I am expected to formulate hypotheses, design experiments to test these hypotheses, and provide interpretation of the results in the form of published papers. In order to do this I need critical input from others that can appreciate my ideas and experiments. While I am able to receive useful input from others in my department and on campus, the field of research that I study (molecular biology of HBV) is a small field, and few within the UW are able to appreciate the finer points. Established researchers in the field attend the International Meeting on the Molecular Biology of Hepatitis B Viruses, as well as students and postdoctoral fellows, and I am able to talk to all these people one-on-one. They are an invaluable resource for criticisms and suggestions that help me to improve how I perform and analyze my work. I would not have this opportunity at any other meeting. I have been able to publish one first-author paper from experiments I have presented at this meeting, and I am currently preparing other manuscripts, again using data presented at past meetings. I have been able to attend these meetings since and each year I gain a much deeper appreciation for how I am able to apply my learning to my research, as well as other research in the department and on campus. In this current economic climate spending is extremely tight, and if I am able to secure partial funding for this year’s meeting I will be able to attend. 3. How do you plan to use and share the information you learn from this PD experience? Participation in this meeting allows me to become broader scientifically. For example, I often share interesting findings presented at this meeting to other people in the department. This often leads to discussions with these people about their research, and thus I am better informed about the current research being conducted in our department. Additionally, I display my research posters in the hallway within after each year’s conference. I engage in discussions with others outside my lab about my research using these posters. These informal presentations promote my research to others within the department, as well as outside visitors. Finally, I am able to learn a great deal of information at these meetings that I can apply to my own research. The result of this is that I am able to conduct my research in a more informed manner.

4. How will participating in this PD activity benefit or enhance the effectiveness of your program, your unit, and the university? My research progress contributes to the research mission of my lab, as well as the department and the university as a whole. I feel that the knowledge and ideas that I bring back from this meeting help me conduct my research more efficiently and effectively. As a result, I will be able to publish more of my studies in peer-reviewed journals. Because funding agencies regard publications as a milestone of progress, I hope that my efforts will contribute to the ability of our lab to obtain NIH grants in the future. The university benefits not only from the research funds awarded, but also by the attention these research articles may provide. Additionally, I think that the research presented at this meeting by myself as well as other members of our lab is highly regarded by other researchers in the field. Not only does this reflect well on our lab, I feel it also reflects well on the department and university as a whole. Finally, through these meetings I am able to network with other researchers, with the potential to establish collaborative efforts. I am currently working on a collaborative project established between my supervisor, and another researcher at University. The opportunity to be a part of this collaboration was, in part, made available because of my ability to interact with other researchers at this meeting. If this effort is successful, it should lead to publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as funding through this collaboration.
