Independent Schools of New Zealand (ISNZ) is a not-for-profit membership association that provides services to 45 member schools. The ISNZ Member Schools collectively educate more than 80 per cent of children enrolled in the private schools sector.

The mission of ISNZ is to serve, strengthen and represent Independent Schools so that New Zealand continues to offer choice, diversity and excellent education outcomes in a strong and vibrant private schools sector.

One of the key strategic objectives of the ISNZ organisation is to provide and facilitate relevant, ongoing professional development opportunities for ISNZ Member Schools. All professional development delivered is relevant, of high quality and networked to all ISNZ Member Schools and, where appropriate, to other interested private schools and education groups.

The ISNZ Professional Development programme draws on the wealth of knowledge and expertise of those at the coalface in our Member Schools, as well as from external sources, national and international, where leading experts are engaged.

The ISNZ Professional Development programme is designed to challenge, provoke, inspire and motivate delegates. It is also intended to provide an opportunity for personnel within our Member Schools, and the sector as a whole, to network and collaborate in a collegial learning environment. We can attest to a number of strong networks that have come about as a direct result of a group of like-minded people participating in a professional development event designed by ISNZ.

For 2018, the ISNZ Professional Development Programme has been designed to examine The Changing Face of Leadership in an Age of Disruption.

Join us at the Grand Millennium Hotel Auckland on Friday 22 June to Saturday 23 June for the ISNZ Annual Conference. The Conference programme has been designed to explore the changing face of leadership with reference to the education sector and with specific attention to leadership in the age of disruption.

We encourage all Member Schools to support this programme, a programme that is current, relevant, responsive and relational, and one that equips participants with tools and resources that will strengthen the learning environments of their respective schools.

Customised Professional DevelopmentIn 2018, ISNZ will again offer professional development that is customised to suit the specific needs of individual Member Schools. This could include repeating a customised version of an ISNZ Professional Development seminar for all or part of a school community. It may be that a cluster of Member Schools in a given region could jointly request professional development from ISNZ.

This may involve working with members of the Board, senior management, teachers or indeed the whole school staff. Member Schools are invited to identify their preferred focus for the proposed professional development, the participants, and a time frame, and to set a budget for ISNZ to work with.

In consultation with Member Schools, ISNZ can develop a cost-effective programme within the specified budget. ISNZ will engage appropriate speakers and handle all administration of the professional development event. Member Schools that take advantage of this opportunity will only be charged for actual costs incurred such as speaker fees, catering, venue hire and AV support where required.

Governance SeminarFRIDAY 2 NOVEMBER9.00 aM—4.00 PM

WELLINGTON

Target Audience: Board Chairs, Board Members.

Independent/private schools in New Zealand are governed independently of each other and are not required to comply with the Education Act 1989 in the appointment/election of Board members. The majority of Independent Schools are separate entities and self-managing. The majority, but not all, are owned and governed by Boards of Trustees and are not-for-profit organisations. School Boards are charged with the responsibility of holding the school, its mission and its future “in trust”. There are some Independent Schools in New Zealand that are for-profit, commercial entities run by a directorship.

Whilst each Independent School has its own unique governance structure there are enough commonalities for a seminar of this nature to provide professional development on principles of effective governance that apply to all schools.

There is a strong focus in the Governance Seminar programme on employment law, health and safety governance, trustee liabilities and other relevant legislation and regulations.

The afternoon programme will follow an open forum format where delegates can raise any topic for discussion. Topics can be submitted prior to the event or on the day. Confidentiality of any matter raised is observed, with the day being chaired by the Chairperson of the Independent Schools’ Association.

The Governance Seminar draws on the expertise of external speakers but also has a strong component of interactive, in-house discussion on issues that delegates would like to raise. Board members attending this seminar have found it an extremely valuable opportunity for networking and for sharing current governance issues and challenges.

“Great group of like-minded people; quality presentations and interaction.”

“Hearing the views of others with lots of great information resulted in lots of questions and ideas to take back to my Board.”

“Wonderful networking!”

Target Audience: Boarding School Managers, Matrons, Housemasters, Pastoral Care Managers, Principals, Senior Managers, those with responsibilities in a boarding school environment.

The Boarding Schools Seminar is designed to raise awareness of key issues of importance to the boarding school environment. It aims to increase confidence and competence and to bring boarding staff up to date with recent, relevant legislative changes and developments.

The seminar provides opportunities for attendees to share experience and good practice with colleagues and encourages reflection and critical evaluation of boarding practice and associated professional issues. The programme is developed to show the boarding component of a school as an integral part of the education delivery, not a separate entity. It is also an opportunity to develop a strong and supportive network with others who hold boarding roles within their schools.

The seminar is held at an ISNZ Member School that has a boarding environment. Delegates value the opportunity to view other boarding schools and to meet and speak with boarding staff at the host school.

ISNZ works with the host school to develop a programme that is relevant and responsive to current issues affecting boarding schools.

The 2018 Boarding Schools Seminar may include some of the following topics:

• The transition from home to boarding school
