@SarahRedfernHS
As we approach the end of our first term of 2019 I would like to
take the opportunity to acknowledge the students and staff of
Sarah Redfern High School who have continued to engage in
quality education through a very long term. As I walk through
the school I am amazed at the attributes demonstrated by our
young people and I am very proud of the citizens they are
becoming. Our teachers continue to develop innovative and
engaging learning that extends our students understanding and allows them to
develop skills that will allow them to be confident contributors to the world outside
of school.
This is a very busy time of year as we approach the celebrations that Easter time
brings. I would like to wish all of our families a wonderful break over this holiday.
This year Easter celebrations occur very close to ANZAC day. I’m looking forward
to participating in my first ANZAC ceremony at Sarah Redfern High School, and
can see so clearly the respect and deep feelings held by the students and staff
towards this ceremony that honours our ANZACs and the servicemen and women
that have come after them.
As the weather starts to change and the days become shorter and cooler, the
momentum of student activity continues to speed up. This term it has been
wonderful to see student success in a range of areas. The swimming and athletics
carnivals, the stage 4 Gala Days, the debating teams performing so well, and
individual students who continue to excel in a range of assessment and learning
activities are clear evidence of this. I hope every student enjoys the upcoming
holidays, and I look forward to seeing them next term.
Regards
Lyndy Clowry Principal - Sarah Redfern High School

News from the Administration Office
News and Reminders from the Office
Students leaving and transferring to other High Schools I would like to remind parents and carers that it is very important that they advise the SRHS office staff if their student is changing high schools. We would ask that you write a letter, call the school or come in and advise us of the information about your students movements and where they will be attending. We are required to keep your student enrolled at SRHS until they have enrolled and are attending another high school, this is a requirement of the NSW Department of Education to ensure that students are attending school. If you have not advised the school that your student is leaving it takes longer to remove them from our school as all the background information needs to be completed. If you have outstanding fees owing to SRHS it is also imperative that these fees are paid prior to leaving the school. If these fees are in relation to a laptop then there are two options at this time.
Pay the outstanding payment and have the school’s Technical Support Officer unlock the device so that
your student can continue to utilise their laptop outside of the school environment and remove it from our records, or
Hand the laptop back to the school, without paying the outstanding amount. Outstanding School Fees I would like to remind parents and carers that students fees are now overdue. All student invoices have been sent out and elective subjects have now been operating for a term. It is a requirement when selecting these subjects that you agree to pay the required subject fee. We are extremely conscious at SRHS of keeping these subject fees to a minimum, however there are additional costs associated with subjects ie: hospitality, woodwork, visual arts, music etc and these costs cannot be covered by school funding. The $50.00 school voluntary contribution fee is utilised to purchase additional resources to complement our Teaching and Learning programs. I would encourage you to pay this contribution to support all students within our SRHS community. Jumpers and Jackets for sale Yeronga Uniforms will be selling school jumpers and jackets at SRHS on Wednesday 1 May in the library from 3.00pm – 4.00pm. This would be a fantastic opportunity to try on and purchase a school jumper or jacket as the weather is starting to cool down now and it is compulsory that all students wear the correct uniform to school.
Costs: Jumper with Emblem $ 55.00 Jacket with Emblem $ 31.00
Please be advised that all students return to school on Tuesday 30 April 20

Breakfast Club As of Week 10 Sarah Redfern High School has its very own Breakfast Club. Breakfast Club is happening every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning from 7:45am until 8:35am in the Sunshine room. Food bank NSW have donated this food to our school to help support our students and ensure they eat the most important meal of the day. We are also working with Ingleburn Rotary to have one hot meal a week in terms 2 and 3. We have a range of Cereals, spreads for toast as well as some juice and fruit. The best thing is that it’s entirely free! If you have siblings from the primary school please bring them along as well. Thanks to the SRC and Interact members who are volunteering to help serve breakfast. Thanks also to our lovely staff volunteers – Miss Haines, Miss Ratusau, Miss Estavillo, Miss Simpson, Ms Clowry, Miss Symington. Hope to see you in the Sunshine room for breakfast!
Behaviour Code for Students Each student would have received a Department of Education Student Code of Conduct during the week 10 Year assembly. A copy of the code has also been printed in this newsletter. Our staff at Sarah Redfern would like to remind students of the appropriate behaviour that they are to enact whilst at school. Please remember to be respectful and responsible when dealing with fellow students, staff and members of our community.
Attendance If you are absent from school please remember to bring a note from home to explain your absences, a doctors certificate or a reply to the sms sent home. It is very important for you to be at school everyday, but if you are not please ensure you have justified your leave.
Spray Deodorant Cans This is reminder to all staff and students that spray deodorant cans are banned from Sarah Redfern High School. Whilst we appreciate your concern for your personal hygiene, there have been an increase in severe asthma attacks around the school as a result of the spray. You may bring a roll on deodorant to school to use, however any spray deodorant cans will be confiscated.
Interact A friendly reminder to our Interact team that our executive meetings are held on week A Wednesdays in Block 8 during lunch. Our full Interact team meetings are held on week B Wednesdays in Block 8 during lunch. Please be on time! If you haven’t joined the google classroom please come and get the code from Miss Hollinger’s window. Also a big welcome to our new Interact coordinator Miss Bell and assistant coordinator Miss Estavillo. We would also like to thank Miss McKinnon for all of her hard work with Interact over the years and wish her well in her new job!

Sarah Redfern High School observed Anzac Day on the last day of Term 1, Friday 12 April, with a moving service organised by Mr McSweyn and led by our School Leaders. The Service was held outside our memorial garden, with stirring tributes to our servicemen and women and our special guests laying wreaths for our lost soldiers. Lest We Forget.

HSC Awards Evening
Page 13
The HSC High Achievers Presentation was held on Wednesday 20 March at the Greg Percival Community Centre at Ingleburn to honour students who achieved a Band 6 in at least one subject in the 2018 HSC. Two of our students Aiden O’Rourke and Shathria Ompragash along with our Principal Lyndy Clowry attend-ed the evening to receive their certificates from the Mayor of Campbelltown George Brticevic. “These results are a testament to the students’ hard work and dedication and the support of their families and teachers’’ he said. “The HSC exams can be a daunting time for some students and I hope these results inspire the current group of HSC students to achieve the goals they set for themselves.’’

Last week, Ms Hardie and Mr Dudley joined forces to provide an exciting and interactive History lesson for 7 Yellow. 7 Yellow had the opportunity to examine and learn about several artefacts ranging from ancient to modern times. “Mr Dudley had showed us many artefacts such as ball bearings, old roman coins, a replica of an old stone axe and he also explained the story behind them”. “We were given the opportunity to touch some of them and examined them with a magnifying glass”. “My favourite artefact was the skull, because it was very interesting to look at and it was amazing to see how similar it was to human skulls. The visit to Mr Dudley’s classroom was very fun and it was super exciting and it made us happy because it was presented in a fun way.” We would like to thank both Ms Hardie and Mr Dudley for the opportunity and we hope we get another visit soon.

Year 8 have been ‘digesting’ human biology knowledge by learning the body systems and producing 3D models of each of the systems by reusing materials and even creating their own organs. The student have been working hard to ensure they know the functions, names and roles each body system plays in keeping their own body alive, moving and growing. Their creativity has been impressive to witness.

In Special Education we implement a practical, hands-on approach to teaching the core subjects. This Term the IO class have been working with financial maths, one of the activities included matching a picture of an amount of money with the number representing that amount.

Community Access and Recycling
As part of our Community Access program, the IO class have been recycling bottles and cans that we have collected around the school. After safely travelling to Minto Marketplace, we re-cycled our cans, cashed in our voucher and will buy ingredients to cook with for our Technology class.
