THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING The College of Engineering is ranked 10th in the UK for the combined score in research quality across the Engineering disciplines (REF 2014). Our research environment was ranked 2nd (behind Cambridge).

Academic staff are organised into four key Research Centres (Systems and Process Engineering Centre (SPEC), Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering (ZCCE), Materials Research Centre (MRC), and Applied Sports, Technology, Exercise and Medicine (A-STEM)), a Centre for Learning and Teaching Enhancement and a Centre for Innovation and Engagement and are supported by a team of over 100 professional service staff.

The College has undergone a very significant period of transformative growth and development in recent years, including doubling student and staff numbers, raising our international research profile, significantly increasing its research grant income and portfolio, and moving to a new purpose built campus in 2015.

The Bay Campus is part of a £450 million development project at Swansea University housing a range of academic areas with high quality student accommodation, teaching and research spaces.

The six new 30,000 m2 College of Engineering buildings include £100M investment in purpose built facilities. A further Engineering building, IMPACT, is in the final stages of construction and due to open in June 2019.

The College delivers a wide range of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate courses. All of our degree schemes are accredited by the relevant professional institution and we consistently achieve good student satisfaction and high employability through the delivery of high quality, inspiring research-led teaching across the subject areas. Swansea University was awarded TEF Gold in recognition of its outstanding teaching.

SYSTEMS AND PROCESS ENGINEERING CENTRE

The Systems and Process Engineering Centre (SPEC) is one of the four main research clusters within the College of Engineering. It is home to 42 academic staff and covers a broad range of engineering and science encompassing electrical device design, sensor technologies, nanotechnology, chemical and biological process engineering and biomedical analytics.

Our substantial research facilities provide 24 laboratories on the Bay Campus site with specialist provision for electrical device characterisation, clean room facilities and chemical wet-labs. SPEC is also a core user of the Centre for Nanohealth (CNH) facility at the University’s Singleton Campus. The £21 million CNH facility is home to a community of over 40 engineers, physical scientists, life scientists and healthcare researchers who have run £20 million of programmes funded by RCUK, EU and Government. The evolution of this research to higher TRL levels through 100 collaborative R&D projects with industry has created 115 jobs and generated £13.1 million of commercial investment and £3 million of InnovateUK funding.

CNH provides a single, integrated R&D environment containing micro-fabrication and bio-materials clean rooms, nanoscale imaging and fabrication facilities. The technology capability in nano-micro fabrication has driven a substantial programme of industry-partnered research going beyond the initial health-focus, involving partners such as Siemens, IQE, SPTS Technologies, Microsemi, GE Healthcare, Unilever, Huawei, and the centre is now a core partner in the S.Wales semiconductor cluster.

SPEC is an interdisciplinary centre and our aims and ambitions reflect this. Our strategic aim is to build cross-sector strength and drive forward multi-skill initiatives. Thus, for instance fundamental materials and device expertise at the micro and nanoscale will feed in to scale-up manufacturing processes and so support the IMPACT manufacturing project. Our sensor knowledge will also link with SPEC data analytics and computational modelling expertise in a partnership with Sports and Exercise Science at Swansea to launch a major new centre of research focused on wearable technologies for human health, productivity and performance.
