Common Core Learning Standards and Assessments Southern Westchester BOCES is offering a series of shared learning experiences to help educators become proficient in using the new Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) in Math and ELA. All workshops will include a shared learning time and an application phase. The goal is to assist administrators and teachers by: ♦ Identifying a shared language about the structure and meaning of the CCLS.

Exploring how to use the standards in designing and implementing curriculum. ♦ Identifying the concepts and skills students need to know and be able to do.

Identifying big ideas or lasting understandings that will drive curriculum construction.

♦ Identifying current and future opportunities for instruction that align to the

CCLS. Developing a shared process to review and revise curriculum maps, and unit and lesson plan alignment to the CCLS.

♦ Using the backward design model to plan new instruction based on the CCLS. ♦ Investigating the six shifts in the CCLS and how they will impact ELA/Literacy

and Mathematics instruction. ♦ Supporting teachers in the implementation of close reading tasks. Districts can choose from a variety of workshops and are encouraged to bring a team to allow for collaboration during the application phase of the workshop.

All workshops can be used as turnkey training for y our district.

Workshop summary Using the backward design model, participants will design a unit of instruction using the ELA/Literacy Common Core Learning Standards. This is a practical hands-on workshop that will include time to apply the concepts to assure that participants leave with a unit in progress. This workshop will help teachers prepare a unit that aligns to the CCLS. Materials: Participants should bring their copy of the ELA/Literacy Common Core Learning Standards and materials they need to create a unit plan. Districts are encouraged to consider sending two or more teachers that can plan together. Audience: Suitable for all classroom teachers who will be using K-12 Common Core Learning Standards and Appendix A English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects.

He is a member of the BOCES Network team, attending turn-key training in Albany which focus on the ELA Common Core Learning Standards.

Workshop summary Using the Tri State Quality Review Rubric, a criterion-based rubric and review process, to evaluate the quality of lessons and units intended to address the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for ELA/Literacy. Developed by educational leaders in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, participants will evaluate and/or re-design current lessons and units.

This practical hands-on workshop will include time to apply the concepts and allow participants to leave with lessons/units aligned to the CCLS.

Materials: Participants should bring their copy of the ELA/Literacy Common Core Learning Standards and lesson(s) or unit(s) to evaluate and revise along with any books or materials they may need to teach these. Crafting a Close Read Literacy Task

Workshop summary Participants will:

♦ Review Common Core Learning Standards and NYS expectations for ALL students and discover the power of the close read as a vehicle to help meet all six shifts demanded by the Common Core

♦ Define the close read and analyze a state exemplar

♦ Experience a close read from the student perspective

♦ Determine how to choose an appropriate text for a close read

♦ Develop understandings of Evidence Based Questions and how to craft them

♦ Investigate ways to support ALL learners prior to and during a close read so that ALL students can meet with success in reading on-grade level complex text

Outcomes: Participants will build their understanding of the term “close read” and discover how to create one. Each participant will begin crafting a ‘close read literacy task’ for their subject area to meet the rigor and expectations of the Common Core Learning Standards.

Materials: Participants should bring a selection of possible texts that they could use to craft a close read . These texts should align to the rigor of the grade level Common Core Learning Standards in which they work. For primary grades, you could use a complete text such as a guided reading book. For intermediate grades and higher, we recommend that you bring a text that does not exceed 2-3 pages such as a short article or document. No matter the grade level, the text should be a critical part of your curriculum.

Workshop summary In this course of study, Shelley Harwayne will explore ways to invigorate daily reading and writing work, while simultaneously meeting students’ diverse needs, addressing district expectations and honoring the essentials of the Common Core State Standards. Throughout, she will honor the wise words of Thomas Newkirk, who said, “When we stop experimenting, we stop living as teachers.” As such, she will introduce innovative writing challenges, ones that are age appropriate and can be accomplished in manageable units of time. In addition, Shelley will highlight the importance of teachers inventing their own non-fiction writing challenges and will provide suggestions and criteria for doing so. She will even offer advice for turning some classroom rituals into non-fiction writing assignments. Finally, Shelley will examine the importance of including short, non-fiction texts during guided reading work with all students . She will discuss the choice of texts as well as those instructional techniques that enable students to read deeply. As students move up in the grades and are asked to gather information for their non-fiction writing tasks, they must be able to read and question complex informational texts. This day long learning event will help teachers to support their students’ efforts and growth.

Interactive writing is a dynamic literacy event in which reading and writing come together.” Andrea McCarrier

Workshop summary In this multi- session course, participants will use the book, Interactive Writing by Andrea McCarrier, Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell as its foundation. Teachers who teach and support students in primary grades will learn how to use interactive writing as a powerful vehicle to teach concepts and conventions of print, the sounds in words and how the sounds connect with letters for beginning writers. Throughout this course, participants will learn about interactive writing, see it demonstrated , apply it in their classrooms and share student artifacts from that application.

Interactive writing is an expertly orchestrated event in which the teacher guides the learning around the writing experience to demonstrate early reading strategies and how words work. The interactive writing process is wrapped in conversation throughout the experience as the students and teacher plan and discuss the text. Through the sharing of the pen between teacher and the children, the teacher is able to guide the writing process and provide appropriate pacing, assistance and instruction where needed. Since the students generally control the physical writing of the text, spelling knowledge increases, as well as the ability to construct words through connecting letters, clusters of letters, and sounds. And, as a boost to familiar reading for students, the interactive writing composition is read and reread by the group helping primary students to make the reading and writing connection.

Interactive writing offers a powerful supplement to other writing experiences for primary children.

Workshop summary This day will serve as a reunion for participants of Shelley Harwayne’s previous workshop day on Non-Fiction Writing. It is intended for those participants who have tried out new ideas and would like to meet to share their work, as well as receive support for any challenges that remain. Participants will be expected to bring artifacts connected to their studies as well as any concerns that arose and questions that remain. Shelley will guide the group as they analyze student work, assess standards met, and think-through ways to enrich and strengthen new units of study. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to create original materials to serve as models for each of the writing challenges previously explored.

3-6 Teachers! Shift with Shelley Harwayne! Weaving Newspaper Study into Elementary

Reading Workshops










Workshop summary The Common Core State Standards and Shift 3 suggest that students need to learn how to navigate complex text. To meet that objective, Shelley will explore ways to use carefully selected newspaper articles as part of whole-class, small group and one-on-one instruction. Participants will discuss the supports and challenges contained in chosen articles as well as discuss ways to weave newspaper reading into the everyday life of upper elementary students. Shelley will suggest additional non-fiction reading materials that are readily available and can easily be reproduced for small group instruction.

Based on New York State Education Department turn-key training, the Data Driven Instruction model helps districts assess where they are with developing school-wide data, use protocols that will directly impact classroom instruction and lead to improved student results. Managing aggressive and violent behavior has become an essential skill relevant to all school personnel. Staff members need safe, effective behavior management training designed to maintain the care, welfare, safety and security of all involved in a crisis. Workshop summary Teachers must be able to solve the puzzle of how to identify and deliver effective, practical classroom intervention strategies to help students with academic delays. This workshop presents a variety of interventions in reading, writing, and academic support skills (e.g., study skills; organization skills, homework completion) that teachers in grades 3-12 can use to support struggling learners. The workshop also presents free, convenient forms in Google Doc format that participants can use to document and track their academic interventions. At the close of the training, participants have the opportunity to select intervention ideas to create their own 'intervention menus' for immediate use in their classrooms.

The training includes recommendations for how participants can take ideas and resources presented at the workshop back to their schools and share them in 'turn-key' fashion with other staff members. The workshop also links the training content to the Response to Intervention model now in place in many schools across the nation.

Isabel’s professional achievements have been honored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Northeast Center for Safe and Drug-Free Schools, and the New York State Department of Health. She has written two books and more than 200 articles and appeared as an expert on 20/20, CBS This Morning, The View, Fox News, and others. Go to the Center for Professional Development homepage: http://www.swboces.org/cpd. There you will find a link on the left sidebar to our course catalog – My Learning Plan. Click on this link. You will see a searchable database screen from My Learning Plan with all the courses currently available for enrollment at SW BOCES and LHRIC. You can either type in the title of the course in the search box and click the View Now button or you can scroll down the page until you find the course for which you want to register. Courses are in chronological order. Please note that there are separate registrations for each date of workshops that are offered on more than one date. Click on the link to the workshop you want and you’ll see the online description. To sign up, click on “Click to Enroll.” Click on the link that applies to you: a. “I’m a registered user” Select if you have already created an account. b. “I’m a new user” Select this option if you do not have an account. c. “MyLearningPlan.com users” Select this option if your district uses MyLearningPlan.com Fill in the information required in the registration. By completing the form, you are establishing an account with a password of your choice. Retain this password for future reference. This account will allow you to check the status of your registration and maintain your own records, such as proof of attendance at the workshop. Complete the registration process. If your district does not use MyLearningPlan.com, you will be reminded that you are required to print out the ENROLLMENT FORM and send it to the administrator in your district who approves professional development workshops. This is usually your Superintendent, your Business Official, or your Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. This requirement ensures that your district approves your request and authorizes BOCES to bill for the program.
