PREFACE

Welcome to our Department of Biomedical Science, School of Biotechnology and Genetic

Engineering, Bharathidasan University. The biomedical science is defined as one of the science disciplines

that provide a knowledge base most directly applicable to the biology of humans. Department of

Biomedical Science, since its inception in 2005, has been instrumental in realizing the importance of the

need to expose young minds towards the different pre and para medical subjects of medical sciences at an

early age and opening up career options other than engineering and medicine. It is the first of its kind in the

country in offering a 5-year integrated program leading to a M.Sc. degree in Biomedical Science to young

students who have completed their 12 years of schooling with studied Biology, Physics and Chemistry

subjects. The department provides the opportunity to obtain a Ph.D degree in Biomedical Science and

allow our students to be competitive in the biomedical science research fields. The department trains highly

qualified and skilled human resources at post-graduate and doctorate level across a broad spectrum of

medical science fields and to carry out competitive research in specific areas that reflect faculty interests.

Our faculty are highly qualified and have research experience in various other countries like USA,

German, France, and Japan. As per direction of our Honourable VC, our department faculty committed to

prepare students with a solid scientific foundation essential for an understanding of human health and

disease. We have created excellent research setting with world class infrastructures. Our research programs

consist of both basic and applied research in interdisciplinary areas of medical field with a commitment

towards betterment of human health and society. Our efforts have fetched nearly Rs 60 million funding

from various funding agencies like DST, DBT, UGC, and ICMR. Recently our department is recognised

by Department of Science and Technology, India, and sponsored with Rs.95 lakhs, Funds for Improvement

of Science and Technology Infrastructure (FIST), Level-I for advancement of our infrastructure. Our

students have placed various medical companies, premier research institutes in India abroad countries like

USA, UK, Germany, France, and China. Many of our M.Sc students are pursuing their higher studies in

various primer research institute like IISc and abroad.

We are constantly updating our M.Sc, Biomedical Science curriculum, based on current scientific

advancements and industrial needs,so that our students have flexibility of choosing either research or

industrial oriented subjects to pursue career in Academic, Bio-Pharma Industry, and Basic & Translational

Research by their Major Elective courses and also to suits International and National Eligibility exams like

GRE, MCAT, UGC-CSIR, DBT, ICMR, GATE, SET etc. Since academic year 2018, students have option

of either ending their program at the undergraduate level (B.Sc) after successful completion of 6 semesters

without any arrear as recommended by UGC, or can continue to have their Integrated 5 years M.Sc. degree

in Biomedical Science. The University authorities committed to extend an enriching and transformative

training to all our M.Sc student and research scholars.

On behalf of our department, I am very confident that young aspirants across India, after browsing

our new website, will opt for biomedical science program and research as a rewarding career. All general

information for students regarding the university, general admission, accommodations, student grants, and

facilities, can be found via the homepage of the Bharathidasan Univesity: http://www.bdu.ac.in for more

information.
