Attached is a photo of five classmates from the Fairmount class of 1944, who enlist-ed in the U.S. Navy together after they graduated. They stayed together through boot camp and then were sent to their assigned ships. ‘This photo was taken by my grandmother (Mabel Frank) at the Breckenridge depot as they prepared to depart after being home on leave from boot camp. The men from left to right are John McConn, Lloyd ‘Pete’ Christensen, Vern Frank, Lowell Kolbe and Harold Bernard. Vern was raised in Tyler, Lowell was raised in Fairmount; not sure about the other three but probably raised near Fairmount as well,’ said Karen Muehler. After the service Vern moved to Wahpeton, married and worked for Citizen’s/Wells Fargo Bank. Lowell moved to Wahpeton, married and worked for the Great Northern/Bur-lington Northern Railroad. Pete married, worked for the railroad and lived in Breck-enridge. Vern was on the U.S.S. Hadley Destroyer when it was bombed by kamikaze planes; Lowell was on the U.S.S. Piedmont.

The photo above is a time-lapse picture of the Vertin bulding, said Steve and Maggie Vertin. ‘What isn’t easily visible in the first photo of that three photo collage is the personnel of Vertin & Bentley. I’ve enlarged that photo unfortunately I can accurately identify/describe only one person in each group: the third person from the left is my grandfather, Joseph Vertin Sr., born 1876, died 1973. Joseph joined his older brother Matt in business after Matt Vertin’s business interest was destroyed in the famous early 1900s fire in the Miksche-Vertin general store (a photo of the Miksche-Vertin build-ing ablaze is mounted on the wall in the Wilkin Bar and Eatery). After Matt moved west to California shortly afterward, Joseph Vertin Sr. and his friend Bill Bentley partnered in a general store --- with Vertin focusing on furniture and Bentley on groceries. In later years as both businesses grew, Joseph Vertin Sr. acquired the entire building in this photograph--- and Bill Bentley relocated one storefront to the south in what used to be Synder Drugstore (now Thrifty White). The fifth person from the left (or middle person in the right hand group) is Bill Bentley, a well known and highly respected city merchant of the first half of the 20th Century. In addition, Bill was a skilled writer and in later years wrote a detailed account of the Miksche-Vertin fire for the local newspaper (Gazette Telegram). The Miksche-Vertin building prior to its destruction by fire, was located directly east/across the street from the former First National Bank Building (now Miller Realty/Heartland Insurance) on the site that is now the parking lot for Jubilee Foods.
