Farewell SpeechFarewell SpeechFarewell SpeechFarewell Speech
Good evening everyone, These past two years have been nothing short of extraordinary. Being crowned Miss Chicago Chinatown in 2008 was such a proud moment for me, as well as my family and friends, and it has been an incredibly amaz-ing and humbling experience. Growing up in Chicago, I have always had a deep love for everything that this city has to offer. We are known as a city that takes pride in its diverse communities and I am so proud to be a part of and representing the Chicago Chinatown community. This experience has allowed me to learn more about Chinatown and all the great people, organizations and events that make it a very unique and wonderful place. I would like to sincerely thank the Chinese American Civic Council for putting forth so much effort, in order to make this pageant possible and to give young women like myself, the special opportunity to serve as an ambassador of the Chinese-American community here in Chicago and in San Francisco. Competing in Miss Chinatown USA was a once in a life-time opportunity that I will cherish forever. I’ve been truly blessed with all the amazing people I’ve met throughout this journey and it is my honor to have worked with you all. Thank you to my wonderful parents for your unconditional support throughout the years. Congratulations to the Civic Council on their 60 years of service to our community! Thank you.
Congratulations to Anna for Winning Miss Chinatown USA — 3rd Princess

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you this evening to a very momentous and happy occasion. Tonight, the Chinese American Civic Council will celebrate our 60th Anniversary. It is a legacy of service to the community that was formulated with the foresight of our Founder, Mr. Walter James and has continued under the leader-ship of my forerunners, many of whom are still very active with the organization. Let me start, therefore, with introducing you to many of our past Presidents who are present this evening. They are Leonard Louie, Helen Moy, Joe Woo, Jr., Tom Chan and our Immediate Past President, Jean Ng.
Our program tonight, “Honoring the Legacy, Building the Future” will feature many of our past programs and individuals who were instrumental in their success. It gives a capsule summary of our achievements and a forward look to the future. In any organization, however, there are individuals who go “above and beyond”. I would like to take a moment, therefore to recognize these individuals who went the extra mile. Helen Wong Jean, the Lady with the Shrill Whistle, was our Historian but also served as the CACC Executive Secretary for over 40 years. Our long history was documented further in our CAP Books with the multitude of photographs captured by Harry Tun, a past President and for decades, the Official Unpaid Photographer for our Organization. Pauline Luke was another, serving for over 25 years as Treasurer. An exceptional volunteer is Ginger Cheung, who has served as the Scoutmaster for our Girl Scout Troop for 34 years. We also have many other volunteers and past Board Members, who have been and continue to help with our programs.
Such is our Legacy and I am honored to have this opportunity to open our Program this evening. On behalf of the Directors and Officers, thank you for your presence to help us celebrate our 60th Anniversary. Please enjoy your meal and have a great evening.
Woodie Lee

CACC Beginnings Many Chinese Americans have long realized the obligation of all Chinese in America to become better American citizens, to take a more active part in the American way of life and to contribute to their special knowledge and talent to the enrichment of American culture.
To give concrete expression to this idea, Mr. Walter C. James, a citizen of Chinese descent, founded Chinese American Civic Council in 1951 with his friends in Chicago and elsewhere. Non-profit, non-partisan and non-sectarian, its founding ideals were dedicated to citizenship training, civic betterment and inter-group understanding.
CACC History CACC has been providing services to the Chinese community for 60 years. During the early 1950’s the Council was the only bilingual organization in the community and our efforts were mostly related to providing service to new immigrants and assisting those with limited English speaking ability. Our volunteers helped these individuals with services such as completing immigration applications, assistance in seeking employment and social security applications, transporting individuals to government offices and health care facilities and providing translation services.
With a maturing population and community growth, personal and family needs changed. Instead of only immigration services, the CACC Board recognized the need to address an increasing senior citizen community, and young children and teenagers presenting different needs. To meet this changing environment our programs were expanded to visiting senior citizen homes, giving gift food baskets to seniors, providing chaperones and bus services for shopping trips, group outings to Museums for the Christmas around the World Program and many more services.
CACC Service Objectives 1. Take a more active part in the American way of life. 2. Contribute our special knowledge and talent to the enrichment of American
culture. 3. Demonstrate our civic responsibilities through constructive citizenship. 4. Promote better inner-group relations by seeking understanding and by improving our housing, business and educational standards. 5. Develop parental responsibility in family living. 6. Motivate conscientious and responsible behavior in our youth.
