Graduates who receive the Associate in Applied Science degree may find employment as technicians in the fields of civilengineering, architecture, and construction or working with architects, consulting engineers, surveyors, public worksengineers, construction companies, materials testing labs, and engineering sales divisions.

Our graduates learn skills in construction methods and materials estimating, management, contracts, codes andspecifications, surveying theory and practice, strength of materials, highway theory and design, and properties of materials.

These skills, when combined with successful completion of required courses in communications skills, mathematics, thehumanities, and the social sciences, will enable you to pursue immediate employment or transfer to a four-year college tocomplete your baccalaureate degree.

ENG 101 - Composition and Literature 1

3 credits

The first semester of a two-semester sequence of reading and writing. Readings include essays and may alsocome from other forms of literature. Students write essays which demonstrate their ability to articulatepersonal response, to draw inferences, to synthesize, and to express informed opinion. Research and its properdocumentation are included in this process.

Class Hours: 3Prerequisites: A score of 8 on Placement Exam or passing grade in ENG 92 - Basic Writing 2 or ESL 122 - Introto Academic Writing 2.

The second semester of a two-semester sequence of reading and writing. Students augment those skillsemphasized in the first semester by writing essays which demonstrate their ability to read, to analyze, tointerpret, and to evaluate works from different genres of imaginative literature, different historical periods, anddifferent cultural traditions. Students are introduced to literary terminology and to the methods of literaryanalysis. Research and its proper documentation are included in this process.

MATH 135 - College Algebra with Trigonometry

4 credits

Topics in algebra and trigonometry include: linear functions, algebra of functions, domain and range offunctions, complex numbers, quadratic functions, radical and absolute value equations, linear inequalities,polynomial division, exponential and logarithmic functions, graphing calculator applications, trigonometricfunctions, applications of right triangles, circular functions, and graphs of trigonometric functions. This courseis designed primarily for students in the technologies, math/science, and the students who intend to continuein mathematics or who need to take physics.

Notes:

Specific graphics calculator required; wait until first day of class before purchasing. Students who take bothMATH 130 and MATH 135 can only apply one of these two courses toward the colleges Core Requirement inmathematics.

An introductory course in preparation for the study of calculus. Designed primarily for technology studentswho require some of the concepts of calculus as well as most precalculus topics but who may not require thedepth of an engineering or mathematics major. Topics include: complex numbers, vectors, composition offunctions, polynomial, rational, logarithmic and exponential functions, and basic differentiation andintegration. Emphasis is on technological applications.

A detailed analysis of topics essential to mastery of a follow-up course in calculus. Assisted by applicationsutilizing a graphical/scientific calculator, topics include: functions and inverse relations; trigonometricfunctions and identities; the study of polynomial, rational, logarithmic and exponential functions; and selectedtopics in analytic geometry.

This survey course examines three major areas of technology (Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical) and is taughtby faculty in each area. Topics include environmental, wood framing, basic electricity, measurements andfluids.

MECH 162 - CAD 1

3 credits

Basic CAD provides information on the use of the microcomputer for Computer Drafting and Design. No priorcomputer background is required. The course is about learning to use a computer with a predesigned system(software) for making lines, circles, rectangles, etc., and adding dimensions and text. Three systems areavailable to choose from: AutoCAD. Participants have in-depth exposure to the system commands andextensive, hands-on lab practice.

Concepts of lines and line drawings; pictorial drawings, lettering, dimensioning, scales, free hand drawing,isometric and orthographic drawing; architectural symbols, details, concepts and methods; electric andplumbing details; site layout (including contours, basic scale drawings of structures).

Owner-architect-builder relationship; zoning ordinances and building codes; site factors; soil considerations;wood, steel, concrete; concrete forms; footing, foundation walls; wall, floor, and roof systems; prefabricatedand precast units; insulation; exterior finish.

An elementary plane surveying course. Topics include the principles of and calculations for taping andcorrections required; differential leveling; traverse and transit computations including linear error, accuracy,correction to computations, area and stadia. The principles and uses of levels, transits, taping equipment, androds are demonstrated in laboratory field assignments.

General principles of stress analysis; practical approaches to the design of floor and roof systems, walls,columns; riveted and welded connections and related topics using timber, steel, and concrete structuralmembers. Some time is devoted to shafts and thin-walled pressure vessels.

The names and functions of various structural steel and concrete members and systems are discussed andanalyzed. Several structural steel systems are assigned, both as individual and class projects. These systems aredesigned according to current specifications using appropriate design techniques, manuals, and theory. Theyare then drawn and detailed by the students, according to current practice.
