    The learner o a second or oreign language

    and culture does not cease to be competent

    in his or her mother tongue and the associa-

    ted culture. Nor is the new competence kept

    entirely separate rom the old. The learner

    does not simply acquire two distinct, unre-

    ving good handwriting; writing is creating a

    text. Restricting the creative and marvelous
