The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements is an excit-ing series about one of the great adventures in the history of science:the long quest to understand what the world is made of—to identify,understand, and organize the basic building blocks of matter.

Three hour-long episodes introduce viewers to some of history’smost extraordinary scientists:

*Joseph Priestley and Antoine Lavoisier—one of science’s greatodd couples—whose discovery of oxygen, and radical interpreta-tion of it, triggers a worldwide search for elements and leads to themodern science of chemistry;

*Chemist Humphry Davy, who is soon caught up in the hunt andmakes electricity a powerful new tool in the search for elements;

*Dmitri Mendeleev, who invents the Periodic Table, bringingorder to the growing gaggle of elements;

*Marie Curie, who shatters this order when she discovers radio-activity, revealing that elements can change identities—and atomscontain undiscovered parts;

*Harry Moseley, who, caught up in the race to discover theatom’s internal parts, uses newly discovered X-rays to put the Pe-riodic Table in a whole new light; and

*Glenn Seaborg, whose discovery of plutonium opens up a wholenew realm of elements, changing the world forever.

The Mystery of Matter shows us not only what these scientificexplorers discovered but also how, using Broadway-caliber actorsto reveal the creative process through the scientists’ own words, andconveying their landmark discoveries through re-enactments shotwith working replicas of their original lab equipment.

The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements will bebroadcast Wednesday, the 19th beginning at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday,the 23rd beginning at 10:00 p.m. (all three episodes air back-to-back on both dates). They repeat (one episode per week) Sundaysat 10:00 a.m. beginning the 23rd. On HD3-1, all three episodes canbe seen Thursday, the 20th beginning at 6:00 a.m. and then againat 12:00 noon, and Saturday, the 22nd, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Hugo Becker and Ava DeLuca-Verley asAntoine Lavoisier and Marie Anne Lavoisier

This three-hour special turns its lens on England’s National Gallery—capturing in fascinating detail the paintings, patrons, artists, and administra-tors who keep the institution going.

The London museum, one of the world’s foremost art institutions, is itselfportrayed as a brilliant work of art. Viewers can listen as guides decode thegreat canvases of Da Vinci, Rembrandt, and Turner. Viewers visit themuseum’s restorers as they use magnifying glasses, tiny eye-droppers, scal-pels, and Q-tips to repair an infinitesimal chip. Then viewers attend admin-istrative meetings in which senior executives do (polite) battle with youngerones who want the museum to become less stodgy and more welcoming to alarger cross-section of the public.

But most of all, viewers experience the joy of spending time with the afore-mentioned masters as well as Vermeer and Caravaggio, Titian and Velasquez,Pissarro and Rubens, and listen as connoisseurs explain the aesthetic, histori-cal, religious, and psychological underpinnings of these masterpieces.

National Gallery will be broadcast Friday, the 21st at 9:00 p.m. and Sun-day, the 23rd at 12:00 noon.

President Lyndon B. Johnson engineeredthe passing of two of the most importantlaws Congress ever approved: the CivilRights Act of 1964 and the Voting RightsAct of 1965. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary ofPresident Johnson’s signing of the VotingRights Act on August 6th, 1965, JFK &LBJ: A Time for Greatness examines howJohnson meticulously worked behind thescenes to outwit the Southern segregation-ists who were determined to maintain theracial divide. Due to intense medical research, manydiseases can often be addressed very hand-ily. However, Mysterious Diseases or rarediseases can be very different. From the pro-ducers of Healthy Body Healthy Mind,this hour-long program looks at several rarediseases.

Pompe Disease is a rare, neuromusculardisease, that can present itself in infancy,adulthood, or anywhere in between. Infantsoften experience weakness, enlargement ofthe tongue, and thickening of the heartmuscles, resulting in dangerous, sometimedeadly consequences.

Disease ProofStudies have confirmed that we can re-

duce our risk of ALL chronic disease by anamazing 80% just by being more active,eating nutritious food, and having healthyhabits. But if we’ve known this for decades,why isn’t everyone healthy? The truth is thatthere are serious obstacles in our way.

It’s hard to believe that the pasta saucewe pour over our “healthy” veggie lasagnamay be loaded with more sugar per caloriethan chocolate ice cream topping. And thereare an abundance of addictive processedfoods and laborsaving devices that act ashealth saboteurs to our bodies.

In Disease Proof, Dr. David Katz, a re-nowned preventive medicine expert at Yale,shows us how to develop the skills we needto lose weight, find health, and protect our-selves from devastating disease.
