AFRO BOP ALLIANCEAfro Bop Alliance, an exciting

seven-piece Latin Jazz ensemble

returns to the Silver Spring

Jazz Festival. This group

approaches Latin music from

a very “western” voice, using

the instrumentation of a jazz

ensemble augmented with

congas, timbales, bongos, bells,

etc., playing compositions in

Afro-Cuban and Brazilian styles.

It is the goal of Afro Bop to

fuse all of these wonderful Latin

styles and cultures to create a

unique sound. Joe McCarthy leads

the group on drums and other

percussive instruments, with

Luis Hernandez on tenor and

soprano saxophone, Tim Stanley

on trumpet and fl ugelhorn,

Dan Drew is the trombonist

and arranger, Harry Appelman

on piano, Max Murray on bass,

with special guest artist Felix

Contreras on the congas.

AFRO BOP ALLIANCEUNIFIED JAZZ ENSEMBLE featuring Karen GrayThe Unifi ed Jazz Ensemble

featuring Karen Gray, performs

swingy and up-beat jazz with an

earthy groove. Band leader, Mike

Noonan, plays the vibraphone,

piano, and trombone, with

accompaniment by John Pineda,

bassist, and Dominic Smith

on drums. They are joined by

vocalist, Karen Gray. Karen was

named a “tiptop vocalist” by the

Washingtonian.

The UJE members have been

passionate about music their

entire lives, and are committed

to music education. They pride

themselves in educating with

hands-on jazz demonstrations

and have performed for a wide

variety of audiences, from

kindergarten classes to local

senior centers.

Allen Toussaint, world reknown composer, jazz pianist, singer, and record

producer, is a musical treasure and one of the most infl uential fi gures in the

New Orleans jazz and R&B world. The New Orleans native has been making

hit records for over 40 years. His infl uence on American music reaches deep

into the idioms of rhythm and blues, pop, country, musical theatre, blues and

jazz. In addition, he brought the New Orleans sound to the national stage,

and it remains a vital and ongoing part of our musical heritage to this day.

Toussaint works in many different musical genres, from rollicking,

earthy soul in the ’60s to gritty, rambunctious funk in the ’70s. Four of his

major, mainstream hit compositions are “Mother-in-Law,” “Working in a Coal

Mine,” “Right Place Wrong Time” by Dr. John, and “Southern Nights” by Glen

Campbell. He produced the LaBelle smash-hit “Lady Marmalade.” At a very

young age, Toussaint became inspired by the music of Fats Domino, Huey

Smith, Ray Charles, and Professor Longhair. He began playing the piano at the

age of seven, recorded his fi rst solo album in 1958, and was inducted into the

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Toussaint started his record label, NYNO

Records, in 2000, which celebrates the indigenous music of New Orleans.

MADISON SWEET HEAVEN KINGSThe Madison Sweet Heaven Kings

is the premier brass band at

the United House of Prayer in

Anacostia. The gospel band was

introduced by church founder

Bishop Charles M. “Sweet Daddy”

Grace. Throughout the years,

trombones were incorporated into

the brass instrument band to create

a new, richer sound. The original

Kings of Harmony was formed in

Washington, D.C., and was lead by

the talented Norvus Miller.

Madison Sweet Heaven Kings

is comprised of 22 musicians,

including two of Miller’s sons, one

of whom now leads the band.

Instruments include three lead

trombones, two sets of “run”

horns, background trombones,

sousaphone, baritone horn, and a

percussion section with bass drum,

snare drum, and cymbals. The choir

is arranged in three- and four-part

harmonies. The 2009 Silver Spring

Jazz Festival is delighted to welcome

the Madison Sweet Heaven Kings’

spectacular and unique sound.

MARCUS JOHNSON PROJECTMarcus Johnson is an

extraordinary jazz keyboardist

and composer, as well as a

successful businessman with

his Three Keys Music label,

headquartered in Silver Spring’s

downtown. He began playing

the piano at age nine, and from

there, he wanted to “create

classics, not just hit songs.”

Marcus, a founding member

of the Silver Spring Jazz Festival,

has done the amazing by

launching a highly successful

record label. He continues to

stand strong with his latest CD

entitled “Poetically Justifi ed,”

released in June, with a

debut at #10 on the Billboard

Contemporary Jazz Charts.
