DCRC’S FIRST FLIGHT TRAINING SESSION OF 2017 PHOTOS BY BOB SPARKS

Ed Leibolt reports:

I want to confirm that we will

have Warbirds over Boyds on July

8 From 9:00am to 4:00pm. At wthe

walt good R/C Field, 16200

Schaeffer Rd Boyds, MD All war-

birds are welcome, no size limit.

The first training session was

held on April 15. We had 6 students

and plenty of instructors and ground

support. Guy Riso did a fantastic job

of getting the trainers ready. No

losses, just one hard landing.

The swap meet was cancelled

due to rainy weather. But, I know

members still have plane stuff to sell.

I will try to work in a swap meet dur-

ing and after one of the future training

sessions.

Thanks

Ed

I almost forgot. We had a suc-

cessful first (last) flight on the Catho-

lic University's plane. The plane was

in much better shape that others that

we have seen in the past. But, it still

had some weaknesses. The two big-

gest was the placement of the landing

gear (right over the CG) and foam

attached to a wood dowel for the ele-

vator. It took almost the entire runway

to take-off and needed a lot of body

English to keep her flying. The land-

ing was less than perfect, but she was

i n o n e p i e c e a t t h e e n d .

Thanks

Ed

Club Meeting BY DOUG HARPER

Volume 63 Issue 05 Page 3

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA RADIO CONTROL CLUB

The meeting, held at the County

Office Building, was called to order by

President Jim McDaniel at 7:37 PM. Jim

asked for the introduction of any new

members or guests. Jim will move

through the reports quickly so we can get

to tonight's program.

County Liaison: No report.

Events: Tomorrow, April 22, is Opening

Day. Food will be served thanks to Chef

Andy. Hope the rain holds off. There

will be a Flea Market under the gazebo.

Training/Community

Outreach : Jim Fisher.

We had six students

last Saturday. Jim

thanked all the in-

structors and helpers

for their assistance.

The training planes

are in good shape. We

will limit the number

of students to twelve this year. We are

also starting a little later at 8:30am this

year.

Field Maintenance: No report.

Membership: Jose

Sanchez is collecting

2017 dues. He will

certainly accept checks

but would prefer Pay-

pal use by members.

Safety Coordinator:

Walt Gallaugher had no

report.

Raffle: Doug Hinken

presented a UMX J3 Cub for tonight's

raffle (donated by Bob Sparks). The win-

ning ticket was held by David Harris,

who received the appropriate hazing for

winning.

Treasure’s Report: Doug wrote one

check in excess of $100 this month. He

had a copy of the YTD Budget Report for

anyone who cares to see it.

Web Site: Jose Sanchez. No report.

Newsletter: Andy Kane. No report.

New/Old Business: None.

Model Shop: David Harris presented his

latest model, a Fokker D5, that was a

WWI German monoplane. The model,

built from a Glen Torrence plan, has an

82" wingspan and is covered with a Balsa

USA lozenge covering . This is the sec-

ond one of these David has built and, this

time, he added some improvements to

give better access to the internals. It uses

a G26 for power. He added a lot more

internal details on this version.

Program: Jim Fisher introduced our guest

speaker, Mike Morgan, who works for

Orbital ATK where he is the project lead

for Government Programs. The subject of

his talk is International Space Station

Resupply. They do a resupply mission

about every four months using a space-

craft called Cygnus which is a "space

freighter" that delivers supplies to the

Space Station. It also takes "trash" away.

They launch from Wallops, VA, as well

as Florida. Cygnus has its own propul-

sion system which it uses to catch up to

the Space Station once it is in orbit. Mike

was instrumental in the design and de-

ployment of Cygnus. Cygnus can haul

approximately 3 to 4 kilograms of cargo.

Cygnus has a Service Module that con-

tains Propulsion, Guidance, Communica-

tions, Command and Data, Power and

Thermal Control Systems that is mated to

a Cargo Module (built in Italy) to form a

complete payload. Mike spent some

time discussing the involved procedure

that is used to prepare the launch vehicle.

It takes up to six weeks to prepare the

launch vehicle and payload. Mike de-

scribed some of the materials that are

loaded, one being special "care" packages

for the astronauts with some special and

fresh foods. Once the payload is close to

the Space Station, a robotic arm is used to

attach the payload and finally mate with

the Space Station. It takes several days

from launch to connect. The cargo must

be carefully packed to stand the g-forces

during launch. Also, special attention is

paid to keeping any microbes out of the

cargo. Getting rid of the trash is a big

deal since, over time, it takes up a lot of

space (and may not smell too great ei-

ther). Once all this is finished, the mod-

ule is released to only burn up during

reentry. Mike spoke briefly about

SpaceX, who is a competitor to Orbital,

that has a rocket that can return to earth

and land. Orbital has a contract to sup-

port this program through 2024. They are

also working on other potential uses for

Cygnus to augment its value to NASA.

Mike received a resounding round of ap-

plause for this very interesting program.

The meeting adjourned at 9:05PM.
