YANGON PHOTO FESTIVAL 9th EDITION

Since its creation in the aftermath of the saffron revolution, the YPF has trained over 500 visual journalists and documentary photographers from all regions and ethnic origins. They document important social, cultural and environmental issues with powerful photo-stories. This year, for the first time, a selection of the best ones will be screened in the heart of Yangon, Mahabandoola Park.

The festival will also host three outstanding exhibitions celebrating Myanmar’s extraordinary ethnic diversity: “Frontiers Photographs (1918-1935)” by James Henry Green, Bellay studio fashion photographs of 1979 and “In Search of Dignity”, the superb series of portraits taken all around the country by Günter Pfannmüller and Wilhelm Klein in the 90’s.

Other exceptional international work will include the World Press Photo Exhibition, Dominic Nahr’s work in South Soudan, the International Photography Awards and retrospective screenings of celebrated photographers Steve McCurry and Hans Silvester.

As freedom of information and freedom of speech are more important than ever, quality visual journalism is essential for the accurate and independent reporting that makes these freedoms possible.

Like every year, the festival will culminate at the French Institute with its Photo Night. The Myanmar photographers will compete for best photo-stories awards in front of a jury composed of international personalities.

EXHIBITIONS

James Henry Green was a British army officer and amateur photographer whose appointment took him to the most remote hill regions of Burma between the two world wars. His fascination with the peoples living in these areas and the exploration of their ethnic differences was the motivating force behind his photo-graphic collection of over 1600 images. It fuelled what was to become a lifelong pursuit of anthropology. This documentary work is a unique visual catalogue of early 20th century Burma and its exceptional ethnic diversity. The Burma collections of James Henry Green are housed in The Royal Pavilion, Libraries and Museums, Brighton, UK.

Curated by Lukas Birk, this exhibition is the first showcase of images taken in the late 1970s at Bellay Photo Studio in Yangon. Founded by Har Si Yone in 1969, the studio has been family run ever since and is still active today. With the rise of photography in urban Burma in the 1960s, portraiture became an important domain for cultural aesthetic along with movies, music and hairdressing. These beautiful images offer us not only a surprising insight into the fashion of the 1970s in then Rangoon but also a rare glimpse of a time when the country was experiencing the “Burmese way to socialism” and was isolated from the rest of the world.

In 1980, Photographer Günter Pfannmüller and writer Wilhelm Klein were the first photojournalists allowed into Burma under Ne Win’s regime. They produced the ‘Burma Insight Guide’, of which over a million copies were printed in 12 languages. Then, they traveled around the country with a portable photography studio of their own invention. What makes their photographs so special is the aura of a dignity that connects the extraordinary ethnic diversity of Myanmar’s peoples. This perspective on what these peoples are sharing documents a fascinating string of a common propriety, a bond that can heal all wounds and unite a nation.

Celebrating independence in July 2011, South-Sudan, the world’s youngest nation was born. Five years later the UN reported on the desperate situation: 2.5 million people uprooted in fighting that started because of a political impasse, over 50,000 killed, and close to 100,000 people displaced and living in camps. War, violence, famine, and disease have driven the East African nation to a humanitarian catastrophe. Swiss photographer Dominic Nahr has been following these developments since 2010 with several extensive trips and has witnessed the dramatic change from hope and joy to horror and despair.

ACTIVITIES

French artist Landry Dunand bought his large camera obscura while living in Kabul from 2006-2008. The camera was used by Afghan street photographers to take identification photos that Afghans need for official documents. The camera is a portable darkroom within which Landry can produce a positive image within 20 minutes.Landry will have a pop-up photo booth and will take portraits with his Afghan camera obscura in Mahabandoola park as part of the Yangon Photo Festival on March 4th and 5th. The French artist will also shoot portraits of Yangon city life with his Afghan camera and exhibit his prints in the park next to the photo booth
