Wij heten u van harte welkom op de 6e editie van het Red Light Jazz festival met dit jaar 104 optredens van 89 artiesten en bands in 43 locaties in en rondom het wereldberoemde wallengebied.

Surinaamse jazzhelden als Kid Dynamite en Teddy Cotton zorgden er in de jaren ’40 en ’50 met spraakmakende optredens voor dat rond de Zeedijk en de Nieuwmarkt een levendige jazzcultuur ontstond. In 1946 vestigde jazzcafé Casablanca zich op de Zeedijk dat destijds door kenners ‘het mekka van de jazz’ werd genoemd. Op de Nieuw-markt werd café Smit omgedoopt tot de Cotton Club, vernoemd naar Teddy Cotton. Red Light Jazz doet deze tijden herleven

Op 7, 8 en 9 juni 2019 zijn vele jazzmusici uit binnen- en buitenland en jong talent te bewonderen in de historische Amsterdamse binnenstad. Het thema van Red Light Jazz 2019 is de bas, het instrument dat fundeert en verbindt. Ervaren bespelers als Jimmy Haslip, Jonas Hellborg, Ida Nielsen, Carles Benavent, Joris Teepe en Harry Emmery maar ook jonge talenten als Tijs Klaassen en studenten van het Conservatorium van Amsterdam zullen daar tijdens het festival uiting aan geven. Het zijn niet alleen bassisten die optreden. Op het programma staan ook concerten van de Dutch Swing College Band, Candy Dulfer, Michiel Borstlap, Sabrina Starke, Ntjam Rosie, BRUUT!, Peter Beets en nog veel meer. Geniet van de muziek en van het decor waar alle concerten plaatsvinden.

FOREWORD

We would like to welcome you to the 6th edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival. This year’s edition will feature 104 performances by 89 artists and bands at 43 locations in and around Amsterdam’s world-famous red light district.

In the 40s and 50s, Surinamese jazz icons like Kid Dynamite and Teddy Cotton created a lively jazz culture around the Zeedijk and Nieuwmarkt. In 1946, the Casablanca jazz café opened its doors on the Zeedijk, which at the time was called “the mecca of jazz” by enthusiasts. On the Nieuwmarkt, café Smit was renamed the Cotton Club, named after Teddy Cotton. Red Light Jazz relives these days.

On June 7th, 8th and 9th, jazz musicians from home and abroad as well as promising young talent can be admired in the historic center of Amsterdam. The theme of Red Light Jazz 2019 is the bass, the instrument that supports and connects. This will be conveyed by experienced bass players such as Jimmy Haslip, Jonas Hellborg, Ida Nielsen, Carles Benavent, Joris Teepe and Harry Emmery, as well as young talents such as Tijs Klaassen and students from the Conservatory of Amsterdam. But it’s not only bass players who’ll perform. The program also includes concerts by the Dutch Swing College Band, Candy Dulfer, Michiel Borstlap, Sabrina Starke, Ntjam Rosie, BRUUT!, Peter Beets and many more.

Tijdens Red Light Jazz 2019 brengt Michiel Borstlap een speciaal programma in de prachtige Waalse Kerk. Een afwisseling van eigen werk en prachtige stukken van Herbie Hancock.

“Herbie speelde mijn liedje ‘Memory of Enchant-ment’ op een moment in mijn carrière dat ik veel naar hem luisterde. Zijn songs Maiden Voyage, The Sorcerer, Dolphin Dance en Cantaloupe Island speel ik al mijn hele leven en vormen een grote inspiratiebron voor mij. Zaterdag 8 juni wordt een betoverende avond in de Waalse Kerk. Die avond komen zijn en mijn songs samen.”

Aldus Michiel Borstlap, die speciaal voor deze gelegenheid de Bösendorfer vleugel van De Waalse Kerk zal bespelen.

At Red Light Jazz 2019, Michiel Borstlap will be featured in a special program in the beautiful Waalse Church. He’ll perform a variation of his own works and beautiful songs by Herbie Hancock, and will play the church’s famed Bösendorfer grand piano especially for this occasion. Says Michiel Borstlap: “Herbie played my song ‘Memory of Enchantment’ at a time in my career when I often listened to him. I’ve played his songs ‘Maiden Voyage,’ ‘The Sorcerer,’ ‘Dolphin Dance’ and ‘Cantaloupe Island’ all my life and they’re a great source of inspiration for me. Saturday, June 8th will be an enchanting evening at the Waalse Church. An evening during which his songs and mine will come together.”

DUO DULFER DIRECTIE

Hans Dulfer (1940) is een van Neerlands meest veelzijdige en veelgeprezen muzikanten. De bekende saxofonist volgt de nieuwste trends op de voet, maar blijft een typische jazzmu-zikant. Hans staat al vele jaren liever op het podium dan in de opnamestudio. In de jaren ’90, als Hans het opnemen van platen eindelijk serieus neemt, volgt grootschalig succes in Nederland en zelfs een sterrenstatus in Japan. Cyril Directie (1970) is al bijna twee decennia een side-man voor Hans Dulfer en is ook een van Hollands meest gezochte drummers. Directie werkte met veel Nederlandse en internationale artiesten. Daarnaast is Cyril ook producer. Nadat Dulfer bijna 15 jaar lang geen nieuw solo-materiaal had opgenomen en/of uitgebracht, overtuigde Cyril Hans ervan samen de studio in te gaan om een album op te nemen met saxofoon en drums als basis. Gastspelers Candy Dulfer, Henny Vrienten en anderen leverden een bijdrage aan dit bijzon-dere project. Het resultaat is een unieke samenwerking en dito album: DUO DULFER DIRECTIE, in 2018 uitgebracht door ZIP RECORDS.

Hans Dulfer (1940) is one of Holland's best known and most versatile musicians and highly acclaimed saxophonists. He closely follows the latest trends, but maintains to be a typical jazz musician. For many years Hans prefers to perform on stage rather than in the recording studio. When in the nineties he finally becomes serious about recording, large-scale success follows in the Netherlands and even a star status in Japan.

Cyril Directie (1970) has been a side man for Hans Dulfer for almost two decades and is also one of Hollands most wanted drummers. Cyril worked with many Dutch and international artists and is also producing records. After a period of almost 15 years not recording or releasing any new solo material, Cyril convinced Hans to hit the studio to produce an album based on saxophone and drums. Guests players Candy Dulfer, Henny Vrienten and others joined the project. The result is a unique album: DUO DULFER DIRECTIE, released in 2018 by ZIP RECORDS.

IDA NIELSEN & THE FUNKBOTS

De stoere Deense bassiste Ida Nielsen, ook wel Prince’s “Funk Princess” genoemd, werd in 2010 door Prince ontdekt en maakte tot aan zijn dood in 2016 deel uit van The New Power Generation en het rocktrio 3rdeyegirl. Inmiddels maakt Ida zelf naam als soloartiest en bandleider met een energieke mix van jazz, funk, rock en pop. Sinds het verschijnen van haar derde soloalbum Turnitup (2016) tourt Ida met haar eigen band ‘the Funkbots’ door Europa, Azië, Australië en de Verenigde Staten.

In januari 2019 kwam Ida’s vierde soloalbum TIME 2 STOP WORRYING (bout the weird stuff) uit. Oldschool-funk vermengd met hiphop en Nusoul en een aantal mooie soul-geïnspi-reerde ballads. Dit is het werk van Ida de funk bassist - met een ingebouwde passie voor experimenten en het zware ritme van de bas.De nieuwe plaat bevat meer dan genoeg ingrediënten voor een knallend optreden op vrijdagavond 7 juni in Olof’s, de Opening Night van de 6e editie van het Red Light Jazz festival.

The badass Danish bass player Ida Nielsen, also dubbed Prince’s “Funk Princess”, was discovered by Prince in 2010. She was a member of The New Power Generation and rock trio 3rdeyegirl until Prince’s death in 2016. Since then, Ida has made a name for herself as a solo artist and band leader with an energetic mix of jazz, funk, rock and pop. Since the release of her third solo album Turnitup (2016), Ida has toured Europe, Asia, Australia and the US with her own band The Funkbots.

Her fourth album “TIME 2 STOP WORRYING (bout the weird stuff)” was released in January 2019. The album once again shows Ida’s acoustically diverse repertoire: Oldschool funk mixed with hiphop and Nusoul. Add to this a sprinkle of beautiful soul inspired ballads, sexy and cool tunes reaching beyond the passionate. But make no mistake. This is the work of Ida the funk bass player – with a built-in passion for experiments and the heavy rhythm of the bass.

De bas staat dit jaar centraal in het Red Light Jazz Festival dat deze editie samenwerkt met het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en het BIMHUIS. Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid verwelkomt de BvR Flamenco Bigband een bijzondere gast: de Spaanse basgitarist Carles Benavent. Samen met de legendarische flamencogi-tarist Paco de Lucía en diens band ontwikkelde Carles een nieuwe flamenco-taal die uitstekend aansloot bij de jazz en fusion van zijn tijd. De BvR Flamenco Big Band is een uniek fenomeen, een 21-koppig jazzensemble rond een flamen-co-kern. De band werd opgericht door de Spaans-Nederlandse saxofonist Bernard van Rossum. Het ritmische spel van de traditionele flamenco tilt hij op een hoger niveau met zijn kleurrijke composities en orkestraties.

The bass is a central theme for this year’s edition of the Red Light Jazz Festival, which originated in the Red Light District and will now collaborate with Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the BIMHUIS. Especially for this occasion the BvR Flamenco Big Band welcomes a remarkable guest: Spanish bass guitarist Carles Bena-vent. Together with legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía and band he developed a new flamenco language, which connected with prevalent jazz and fusion styles. The BvR Flamenco Big Band is a unique phenomenon, a 21-piece jazz ensemble conceived around a core of flamenco protagonists. The band was founded by Hispano-Dutch saxophonist Bernard van Rossum. He takes flamenco harmonies and rhythms to another level through colorful compositions and orchestrations.

De Dutch Swing College Band, Nederlands toonaangevende en bekendste jazzorkest, staat nog altijd borg voor professionele uitvoeringen van traditionele jazzmuziek op wereldniveau. Het swingende orkest, opgericht op 5 mei 1945, wordt alom met haar voorbeeldfunctie gezien als hét visite-kaartje van de Nederlandse Jazz en heeft voorzichtig geschat meer dan 150 albums uitgebracht. De bezetting is vanzelfsprekend door de jaren heen meermalen gewijzigd, waardoor de Dutch Swing College Band meer is dan een gewone groep muzikanten. Het predicaat ‘instituut’ is hier meer van toepassing. Met verfrissende arrange-menten in de onmiskenbare Dutch Swing College sound, gespeeld door een verjongd orkest, is de Dutch Swing College Band vandaag de dag energiek als nooit tevoren.

The Dutch Swing College Band, the Nether-lands' leading and most well-known jazz orchestra, continues to guarantee traditional jazz music performances on an international level. The swinging orchestra, founded on May 5, 1945, is widely regarded as the calling card of Dutch Jazz and has thus far released more than 150 albums. The line-up has of course changed several times throughout the years, making the Dutch Swing College Band more than just a group of professional musicians. The term "institution" is definitely more applicable here. With fresh new arrangements reflecting the unmistakable Dutch Swing College sound and played by a rejuvenated orchestra, today’s Dutch Swing College Band is more energetic than ever before.

Het Red Light Jazz Diner begint al bij de entree waar gasten als VIP’s worden ontvangen en op de rode loper worden gefotografeerd alsof het een filmpremière betreft. Daarna worden de gasten door lieftallige hostesses begeleid naar een 6-persoonstafel in de sfeervolle Olofskapel (Olof’s) die is omgetoverd tot een luxe nachtclub. Chef-kok Chris Naylor van sterrenrestaurant Vermeer heeft voor het Red Light Jazz Diner een fantastisch 3-gangen menu samengesteld, met een bijpassend wijnarrangement.

Tijdens het diner treedt het Round Midnight Orchestra op, een jazzorkest dat bestaat uit topmusici uit de Nederlandse jazzscene. Met hun nieuwe show ‘Crooners Night Club’ nemen zij het publiek mee naar de clubs van Las Vegas in de jaren ’50 van de vorige eeuw, de glorietijd van The Ratpack (Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra en Sammy Davis Jr.).

Na het diner volgt een concert van Candy Dulfer Jazzband met bassist Harry Emmery als sluitstuk van een onvergetelijke avond.

The Red Light Jazz Dinner is guaranteed to kick off in style at the entrance, where guests are received as VIPs and photographed on the red carpet as though it were a film premiere. Afterwards the guests are accompanied by lovely hostesses to a six-person table in the atmospheric Olof’s Chapel, transformed into a luxurious nightclub. Chef Chris Naylor from Michelin star restaurant Vermeer has concocted a fantastic 3-course menu, complete with an exquisite wine pairing.

Performing during the dinner will be the Round Midnight Orchestra, a jazz orchestra consisting of top musicians from the Dutch jazz scene. Het Engelse Soulandjazz.com riep het album uit tot Soul Album of the week en het eveneens Engelse Echoes Magazine verkoos het tot Beste Soul Album van 2017!Momenteel werkt Ntjam Rosie met een nieuw productieteam bestaande uit Bart Wirtz, Lucas Meijers en Thomas Eduard aan haar zesde studio album dat oktober 2019 zal verschijnen.Dit voorjaar was Ntjam Rosie met zanger/trompettist Jeroen Zijlstra te bewonderen in 10 theaters in de succesvolle productie van Thijs Borsten, ‘De Uitdaging’. Het gezegde ‘ jazz is om op te dansen’ wordt door superjazzformatie BRUUT! met hun vijfde album nog maar eens bevestigd. Eerder verschenen BRUUT! (2012), Fire (2013), Mad Pack (2015) en Superjazz (2017). Op 'V' heeft Neerlands Best Geklede Band (Esquire, 2016) zichzelf in samenwerking met producer Paul Willemsen opnieuw uitgevonden. Het resultaat is een plaat vol stampende grooves, energie en smerigheid. Maar is het wel jazz? Of is het surf? Of rock? Eén ding is zeker: op de muziek van BRUUT! kan alles, behalve stilzitten.

Over the years BRUUT! has made people sweat, shout and most importantly dance, all the way from Nagasaki to the West Frisian Islands. Mean Hammond sounds, hard grooves and 60s surf rock merge into a danceable mix. In almost 10 years the band released four albums: BRUUT! (2012), Fire (2013), Mad Pack (2015), Superjazz (2017); and received an Edison nomination. BRUUT! is much more than just jazz. In November 2018 Dox Records has released the fifth album of BRUUT! titled V.

Als sessie-muzikant nam Jimmy platen op met Bobby McFerrin, Gino Vannelli, Steely Dan, Anita Baker en vele andere sterren. Op initiatief van percussionist en vriend Jeroen de Rijk en de organisatie van het Red Light Jazz festival komt Jimmy speciaal naar Neder-land voor een eerbetoon aan Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987), een van de meest invloedrijke basgitaristen ooit. Voor deze gelegenheid komt ‘Zawinul protegé’ toetsenist Scott Kinsey met Jimmy mee uit Amerika. Het duo wordt bij het tribute-concert in de Blue Note zaal bijgestaan door twee Nederlandse topmusici: Jeroen de Rijk op percussie en Hans Eijkenaar op drums.

Jimmy Haslip is the former bassist and co-founder of the American jazz fusion group Yellowjackets. Clips van hun kersverse trio op YouTube klinken veelbelo-vend, met songs van Nina Simone, Willie Dixon en Lucinda Williams, en een verrassende rol voor percussionist Keita Ogawa.Charlie Hunter is een begrip onder gitaar-liefhebbers en een uniek fenomeen op 7- en 8-snarige gitaar: hij speelt tegelijk melodieën, akkoorden en baslijnen en kan daarbij improviseren en een onmiskenbare groove vasthouden. Hij wekte eerder met Norah Jones, John Mayer en D’Angelo. Lucy Woodward is een zangeres met Neder-landse roots die opgroeide in New York. Ze maakte diverse solo-albums, schreef pophits en zong bij Pink Martini en Snarky Puppy. Daar-naast werkte ze met Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan en Carole King. Tijdens Red Light Jazz 2018 trad Lucy Woodward op in The Bulldog Hotel.

SABRINA STARKE

Sabrina Starke is niet zomaar een zangeres. Ze won al een aantal prestigieuze prijzen voor haar soulvolle muziek, waaronder twee Edison Awards (Beste Nieuwkomer van 2009 & The Edison Jazzism People’s Choice) en twee Radio 6 Awards (Best Album 2013 & Best Song 2015). In de afgelopen 10 jaar bracht Sabrina een groot aantal singles uit, afkomstig van haar 5 albums. In 2008 verscheen haar debuutalbum Yellow Brick Road met daarop de hitsingle Do for Love. Nadat het beroemde Amerikaanse jazzlabel Blue Note Sabrina had opgemerkt brachten zij het album opnieuw uit waarna het 52 weken in de Album Charts stond en platina werd. In 2015 ging Sabrina haar creatieve talenten en muziek toewijden om mensen te inspireren. In 2018 vierde zij het 10-jarig jubileum van haar zangcarrière met de release van haar zesde, zelfgeschreven studio-album Underneath the Surface. In april van dit jaar kwam het album uit op vinyl met als extra 3 niet eerder uitgebrachte nummers.

Sabrina Starke is a self-made, award winning singer-songwriter, producer, and self-empower-ment ambassador residing in Rotterdam.Sabrina has won a number of prestigious awards for her soul-soothing music, including two Edison Awards (Best Newcomer of 2009 & the Edison Jazzism People’s Choice) and two Radio 6 Awards (Best Album 2013 & Best Song 2015). In less than a decade Sabrina has released 5 albums and a multitude of singles. In 2008 she released her debut album ‘Yellow Brick Road’ and the single ‘Do for Love’. When the famous jazz label Blue Note picked up on it and decided to re-release the album, it stayed on the album charts for 52 consecutive weeks and became certified platinum.In 2015 Sabrina decided to devote her creative talents and music to inspire and uplift people. With the 10th anniversary of her singing-career, 2018 was a special year for Sabrina. She released her sixth self-written studio-album ‘Underneath the Surface’. In April she released a vinyl version of the album with 3 extra previously unreleased songs. In May 2019 Sabrina continues her UTS tour including a concert at the Red Light Jazz festival. Armed with her guitar and a social consciousness this creative soul will continue to share her talents with the world.
