Welcome to the 2016 Belfast Photo Festival Youth Edition, Europe’s only photography Festival for young people aged 12-17. The festival encourages the participation and involvement of young people from all sections of the community through our photography exhibitions, workshops, activities and exhibition tours.

We aim to discover and inspire young photographers of the future by providing opportunities that build photography skills through having fun; whilst offering challenges that will help build young people’s confidence in making images. We will also be celebrating Northern Ireland’s sporting champions and highlighting the positive impact sport can have on our lives.

In our exhibition programme we have mixed photographers whose work explores a number of different ideas that have come out of making images in a range of sporting arenas. We are showcasing work by homegrown photographers alongside those who offer an international perspective.

As one of our major highlights, we are delighted to present the first exhibition in the UK and Ireland by U.S. photographer and Guggenheim Fellowship awardee Larry Fink. In his photographs Fink presents the adrenaline pumping sport of boxing from his assignment with Mike Tyson and his manager, Jimmy Jacobs.

We have images by Jo Longhurst, whose photographs explore the physical and emotional experiences of elite gymnasts. In a very different sporting arena Richard Gilligan, Ricky Adam and Charlotte Thomas look at Skate and BMX culture.

Whether it is taking part in a workshop attending a talk or visiting an exhibition we hope you enjoy this exploration of sporting culture.

This exhibition pairs boxing photographs of Belfast based photographer Richard Wade and American photographer Larry Fink. Fink’s work came out of an assignment to photograph Mike Tyson’s manager Jimmy Jacobs. Wade’s approach is that of “slow journalism,” returning to the same places and shooting them over and over again.

Interviewed about his work for The New York Times Fink describes how “I used to listen to the Friday night fights. We were people of the left. Boxing was a symbolic sport for people who were underdogs to come up and prove themselves triumphant and powerful... In the field of boxing, you have unbelievable purity of intention and innocence, and unbelievable greed, evil and belligerence, all sitting in the same stew pot. It’s a spicy stew. I like spicy stew.”

Larry Fink started taking photographs as a teenager. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1976 and 1979. His work has appeared in top publications such as Vanity Fair, W, GQ, Detour, The New York Times Magazine, and The New Yorker.

Richard Wade studied photography at Ulster University School of Art. He has worked on commissions for a range of clients including the Financial Times, Surface Magazine.

An exploration of the physical and emotional experiences of elite gymnasts through photography, performance and sculptural installation.

The work of the London based Jo Longhurst makes visible new perspectives on the quest for perfection. Working through active collaboration with her subjects she depicts the passion and determination, as well as the challenges and difficulties facing those who cultivate it. Other Spaces explores the rigors of training and competition to which elite gymnasts subject themselves, and the physical and emotional states they experience along the way. This exhibition explores what is required to produce a perfect performance, gently probing how ideas of perfection shape personal and national identities, as well as social and political systems.

Made in collaboration with British Gymnastics and the International Gymnastics Federation; Gemini Gymnastics Club, Oshawa, and Heathrow Gymnastics Club, London.

Generously supported by AIMIA, Art Gallery of Ontario, Arts Council England, Arts Council Wales, Ffotogallery, John Kobal Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, National Media Museum, Mostyn, Pavilion, and the European Centre for Photographic Research

An exhibition exploring Skate and BMX culture.

Richard Gilligan put down his skateboard in favour of his camera, to spend five years documenting make-shift skateparks built all over the world. “It takes time, dedication, and a great deal of stubbornness to become a skateboarder, Some people have likened it to wild animals building dens in the wild. I really love that comparison’

Ricky Adam’s describes his approach as “kinda haphazard and often out of compulsion. I tend to only photograph things that genuinely interest me. I’ve found that’s the way to get the best results.” He has been involved in the D.I.Y. punk community for years as well as being Co. Editor/Photographer for ‘DIG BMX’.

Charlotte Thomas has been a skateboarder since she was 16 and is a regular face in the skateboarding world, presenting a female perspective to urban sport through her work ‘Concrete Girls’.

The photographers have been included in publications including The New York Times, iD, The Last Magazine, Nylon, Monster Children, Lodown and Dazed & Confused, The Independent, Juxtapoz, Obey, Maximum Rock N’Roll, Trap Magazine, Supra Skateboarding, Breaks Magazine and Girl Skate UK.

The Youth Edition also showcases the work of young photographers. This Belfast Exposed Photography Exhibition, in partnership with AES electricity, shows work undertaken by 4 local schools in the Carrickfergus and Larne areas: Carrickfergus Grammar, Larne Grammar, Ulidia Integrated College and St Killian’s College. The project, run over 3 weeks, allowed pupils from each of the schools to visit Kilroot Power Station and Ballylumford Power Station to document how power is made and then used in their schools.

The Belonging Project

Date & time: Saturday 9 April, 1:00 - 3:00pm

Belonging’ is designed to portray the growing migrant culture of Northern Ireland by focusing on individuals with unique stories to share. The central component of ‘Belonging’ is a collection of portraits of migrants, each photographed with an object or memento, which they have brought to Northern Ireland from their home country.

In this workshop participants will discuss how sports can promote social cohesion and acceptance, using the portraits and stories of the Belonging Project as reference. Participants will also have the opportunity to have their own portraits taken and stories shared, with a photograph to take home as a momento.

The Karate Kid (1984)Date & Time: Saturday 30 April, 3:00pm

In this film classic, Daniel La Russo and his mother move from New Jersey to California. She has a wonderful new job, but Daniel quickly discovers that a dark haired Italian boy with a Jersey accent doesn’t fit into the blond surfer crowd. Daniel manages to talk his way out of some fights, but he is finally cornered by several who belong to the same karate school. As Daniel is passing out from the beating he sees Miyagi, the elderly gardener leaps into the fray and save him by outfighting half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Daniel soon find out the real motivator behind the boys’ violent attitude in the form of their karate teacher. Miyagi promises to teach Daniel karate and arranges a fight at the all-valley tournament some months off. When his training begins, Daniel doesn’t understand what he is being shown. Miyagi seems more interested in having Daniel paint fences and wax cars than teaching him Karate.

The film will be followed by an award ceremony, where the winners of the Festival’s ‘Movie Poster Competition’ will be announced and awarded their prizes. This screening is a partnership between Belfast Photo Festival Youth Edition and Cinemagic
