Here we are at our 13th edition of Expo Hightex–Advanced Workwear Canada. Allow me first to thank our many exhibitors and our delegates. Again this year, your presence in such large numbers, confirms that Expo Hightex has become a must for our industry.

The 2014 Expo Hightex organizing committee has done an outstanding job sparing no efforts in organizing an exceptional event. Our aim has always been to bring great speakers to this symposium. Our confer-ences speak to our industry and allow us to showcase our knowhow.

The Canadian textile industry can be proud of its flagship event both technologically and commercially. Despite the current economic climate, Expo Hightex still remains a key event for the technical textiles industry. Support and involvement from all the industry’s stakeholders has been phenomenal and decisive for this event. For the first time at EXPO HIGHTEX, CTT GROUP, in collaboration with CSMO Textile and Industry Canada, is offering specialized training in the areas of work wear, eco wear and geo-synthetics. This training will certainly contribute to our industry’s technological excellence in all its sectors.

These materials need to be tested against VOC’S and need to be certified safe.

In order for industry to obtain the necessary product certifica-tion, CTT Group has recently set up a new VOC laboratory equipped to extract and sample VOC’s and to analyze toxicity levels of organic compounds.

Evaluating Safety and Comfort: Flame and Thermal Manikins Development and application of protective clothing ensembles is guided by conflicting requirements, e.g. burn protection vs heat stress. Technological Advances about Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in Blunt Trauma ProtectionThe personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to deal with blunt trauma aim to protect the people that wear them to prevent certain types of injuries which occur as a result of blunt impacts. This type of blunt trauma PPE is often used by people working in law enforcement, army, correction facilities and other types of emergency response units, for which the chance of blunt impact is significantly higher. Therefore, wearing this PPE or not may equate to the difference of being alive or death in certain dangerous situations. The Challenges of Modern Military Ground Operations in Arctic RegionsMilitary operations by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in Arctic regions have always been a challenge, for combat equipment certainly, but most of all for survival equipment for this extreme environment. Right now the CAF’s survival equipment is based on a design dating from the 50s using materials that existed at the time. Since the Cold War’s end, the type of operation and the goal of the missions carried out by the CAF in Arctic regions have evolved greatly. The duration and the challenges that must be faced pose problems for logistic support, as much in terms of material as in energy. This presentation will look back on how survival equipment was developed by RDDC’s ancestor, CARDE, and show the present state of CAF survival equipment for Arctic environments. The equipment’s advantages and disadvantages will be discussed along with possible avenues for improvement in a context where climate constraints weigh heavily.

Performance Evaluation of 3D Textile Preforms for Manufacturing Complex Composite Parts In partnership with Bombardier Aeronautics, Bell Helicopter Textron Canada and a number of Quebec SMEs in the aeronau-tics field, the CRIAQ-COMP501 project by the Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Québec is designed to evaluate the performance of different 3D textile preforming techniques for rapid infusion manufacturing of composite parts in complex forms. Three main areas are studied: preform characterization, mechanical behaviour of composites, and non-destructive inspection. The presentation will give an overview of the project and focus on the mechanical properties of composites made using textile preforms.
