PROGRAMME NOTES

Lantau Trio

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992)

Invierno Porteno

Astor Piazzolla is celebrated as having brought the traditional Argentinian Tango into the concert hall. In

1970 he wrote this, the last of his “Seasons” in which he portrays “Winter in Buenos Aires” with a segue

at the end preparing for “Spring”.

Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Dumky Trio, Op. 90

Lento maestoso – Allegro

Poco adagio – Vivace non troppo Andante – Vivace non troppo Andante moderato quasi tempo di marcia – Allegretto scherzando Allegro Lento maestoso – Vivace

Composed between 1890-1, Dvorak's Dumky Trio sings with simple beauty & colour of folk song and dance,

though all the melodies are Dvorak's own. The nickname derives from the Slavic term “dumka” meaning a

“fleeting thought or idea”. In musical terms, a Dumka is typically a melancholy lament in ABA

(slow-fast-slow) form. This conception results in a structure of six short movements that feature sudden

contrasts in tempo (speed) and character.

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Trio No.39 in G major, Hob.XV:25

Rondo all'Ongarese Haydn's so-called “Gypsy Rondo” (1795) is again inspired by folk music, this time from Hungary.

Dance-like melodies and rhythmic syncopations are given drama with sudden changes in mode from major

to minor.

The Lantau Trio

The Lantau Trio was recently formed by Spencer Goh (violin), Rosie Mills (cello) and Lantau resident Sui

Ming Chu (piano). The trio takes its name from Lantau Island where they first met to play together. Sui Ming

and Rosie played together professionally when they lived and worked as musicians in the UK. When Rosie

and her husband, Spencer, relocated to Hong Kong late in 2010, they met up with Sui Ming and thus the

trio was formed. The Lantau Trio is keen to ignite a passion for chamber music and share some of the

wonderful music written for the idiom here in Hong Kong.

Spencer Goh, violin

Spencer started the violin aged 7 and performed in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra. He

frequently performed in chamber groups during his school years, and participated in the renowned National

Chamber Music Competition for schools, performing in the finals concerts at St John Smith Square.

He studied Physics at Imperial College, and Computer Science in Birmingham, whilst continuing to perform

on the violin and voice. More recently Spencer performed as a member of the celebrated Holst Singers and

in many orchestras in London including YMSO, Orchestra of the Arts and as co-principal violinist of

Orchestra of the City.

Rosie Mills, cello

Rosie is a freelance cellist and teacher. She performs in various ensembles throughout Hong Kong

including the Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra. Rosie has taught strings and cello at Hong Kong

International School and currently directs the Junior Orchestra at the Chinese International School. She

has a growing number of cello students of all ages and from beginner to grade 8 and above. Rosie has

conducted many school orchestras and choirs in the UK in venues throughout the country and in St Marks'

Basilica, Venice. Her students have been highly acclaimed in festivals in the United Kingdom, winning

prizes for outstanding chamber music and choir performances in National Festivals. Rosie is also a UK

certified practitioner of Dalcroze and as such, has taught on courses throughout the UK and as a professor

at the Guildhall School of Music Junior School.

Rosie graduated with a M.A. in Music from Cambridge University before pursuing her performance studies

at the Guildhall School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. Her principal teachers included

Anna Shuttleworth and Louise Hopkins and she has received coaching and master classes from the

Tackas, Royal, Vellinger, Arditti and Allegri Quartets. She has performed as principal and co-principal cello

with the Orchestra of the City, Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra and the Guildhall Symphony

Orchestra among others. She has given quartet, trio and solo recitals throughout the UK.

Sui Ming Chu, piano

Sui Ming, pianist and teacher of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, graduated from London’s Guildhall School of Music

in 1986 and more recently attained Bachelor of Arts HES-SO in music and movement from Haute Ecole

Specialisee de Suisse occidentale: Institut Jacques-Dalcroze, Geneva in 2009 to become the first certified

Hong Kong Chinese Dalcroze teacher.

Between times, she has performed as soloist and chamber musician and taught professionally in Europe

and Asia. She returned to Hong Kong in 2009 since when she has taught in the HKAPA (dance, music and

drama undergraduate), Baptist University (Continuing Education) and special-needs HHCKLA Buddhist Po

Kwong School. Her future commitments include workshops for HK i-Dance festival in November 2011 and

workshop for HKU Space 2012. She is an adjudicator for the Hong Kong Asia Open piano competition.
