Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sigrid KaagAt our pavilion, we will show that by working together, government bodies, businesses, and knowledge insti-tutions can – and will – make this planet more sustain-able. For centuries, the Gulf and the Netherlands have enjoyed a close relationship in which trade and scien-tific exchange have always played an important role.

Expo 2020 Dubai offers exciting opportunities to deep-en these longstanding ties, foster positive change and showcase innovative solutions that integrate water, en-ergy and food. It’s a chance to work together to build on the growing global consensus regarding the Sus-tainable Development Goals. These goals are a frame-work for generating more effective forms of partnering, with a view to creating a better future, through solutions that bring together government, businesses and knowl-edge institutions alike. The Netherlands Pavilion will offer such solutions.

On behalf of all Expo champions, I hope to welcome you to the Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, in the spirit of a single goal: connecting people and cre-ating a sustainable future together, for everyone.

Mr Hans Sandee, Consul-General/ Commissioner-General‘Connecting minds, creating the future’ is the theme chosen by our hosts, the government of the United Arab Emirates, for this truly global event. The Nether-lands believes in this theme wholeheartedly, because of its underlying ambitiousness. How great will it be when each visitor can become a change agent by internalising a few ideas from this Expo and implement-ing them back home?We believe that this particular Expo will inspire change, showcase innovation and help create a more sustain-able future. It will serve as a world stage, for businesses, knowledge institutions, NGOs, academics and – let’s not forget – the public. This is a place for minds to meet. The Netherlands is proud to be part of this unique global event.

The Netherlands is keen to contribute to a more sustain-able future. In the years ahead energy consumption in this region is expected to grow at a faster rate than in the rest of the world. The same holds true for water consumption, and there is a strong dependency on food imports. And this is where the Dutch can provide ingenious solutions and innovative approaches – approaches that will unite water, energy and food.

This can be done by showcasing home-grown solutions that link the issues of water, energy and food and by working closely with countries to develop sustainable solutions that are appropriate to local ecosystems. We can use our innovation, knowledge and expertise to help pursue regional ambitions. We achieve this by connecting people, our knowledge institutions and the private and public sectors.

The Netherlands Pavilion will be a place where crea-tive and innovative minds come together, where there will be opportunities for people to connect through a wide variety of events. Our pavilion will offer a warm welcome to the general public, and it will also be a platform where businesspeople, politicians, artists, academics and many others will meet and colla-borate. We are a country that stands for openness, crea-tivity and inclusion. We are confident that the Dutch approach of bringing partners together will add value to a global event like the Dubai EXPO 2020.

Let’s connect minds and create a better future!

BiographyBefore her appointment as Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Ms Kaag held vari-ous positions at the UN Political Affairs Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the International Organ-ization for Migration in Geneva. Additionally, she was senior UN adviser in Khartoum and Nairobi and held

various positions at UNICEF, including Deputy Director of the Programme Division and Chief of Staff in New York, and Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa in Amman. Ms Kaag then served as Assistant Secretary-General for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in New York.

From October 2013 to September 2014 Mr Kaag, as UN Under-Secretary-General, led the mission to eliminate chemical weapons in Syria. After this mission was com-pleted, in 2015, she became Under-Secretary-General in Lebanon with responsibility for all UN activities in the country, specifically the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

In 2015 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Exeter. She was awarded the Carnegie Wateler Peace Prize in 2016 in recognition of her efforts and the results of her work in the Middle East.

Ahmed Aboutaleb – Mayor of Rotterdam, the Netherlands

‘By working together and connecting sectors we make a difference when it comes to a sustainable world. The Netherlands is home to cutting-edge technology and knowledge.

We are a small country, and we cannot feed the world. We don’t have the space for it, but we have exception-al technology and knowhow in areas like water, energy and food.

We all want a safe and stable society. This is a work in progress. The challenges we face, whether they are economic, social or environmental, have to be met in collaboration with all our citizens. In times when people tend to be divided into groups, it is important to build bridges and understanding for the common good.’

BiographyAhmed Aboutaleb (born 1961 in Beni Sidel, Morocco) has been the mayor of Rotterdam since 2009.

As the mayor of a big city and the largest port of Europe, Mr Aboutaleb has a highly international mindset. He believes the challenges we are facing can only be met by sharing knowledge and working together. Mayor Aboutaleb is a frequent speaker on the topics of water, energy and food, combining his experience at an urban level with his global outlook. He is a proud ambassador for Dutch expertise in water management and food, and he is deeply committed to the energy transition. The ‘next economy’ will be both digital and circular, so the urgency to innovate is high. Making connections between related sectors will help deliver the desired sustainable growth.

Mayor Aboutaleb is a strong advocate of free trade and international cooperation as drivers of peace and stability in the world. Previously, he represented the Labour Party as State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment in the fourth Balkenende government (2007-2008) and as a member of Amsterdam City Council (2004-2007). Mr Aboutaleb came to the Netherlands at the age of 15 for family reunification. His family lived in The Hague, where he attended Junior Technical School, Intermediate Technical School and Technical College, graduating with a degree in Telecommunications in 1987. Ahmed Aboutaleb is a poetry enthusiast.

Mayor Aboutaleb champions the values enshrined in the Dutch Constitution: freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the principle of non-discrimination. In his view, obtaining Dutch citizenship entails a responsibility to respect and uphold those values and take part in building a ‘We Society’. The more people that do this, the stronger and more resilient that society will be, in both good times and bad. He regularly takes neighbourhood strolls through Rotterdam to talk with residents about their concerns.

Manon Janssen – CEO Ecorys and chair of the Top Sector Energy

Manon Janssen was born in 1961 in Leidschendam, the Netherlands and moved to Belgium in 1976 where she studied at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She obtained a Master’s in Applied Sciences and Engineering at the Solvay Business School.

Meiny Prins – CEO Priva

‘Cities will be the drivers of the circular economy. An integrated approach is the key to creating sustainable cities. The first step is to incorporate green belts − where a city’s food is produced − into urbanised areas. Cities need to rethink the link between food production and urbanisation. The green belt (or urban growth boundary) and food production must become an integral part of major urban developments. If cities succeed in this, residents of rapidly growing metropolises will not only have access to healthy and safe food; they will also be able to enjoy clean air,

clean energy and safe drinking water. Locally focused food production will be an inspiring and important part of the circular economy.’

BiographyMeiny Prins is the CEO and co-owner of Priva. She devotes a large part of her life to promoting sustainability, innovation and internationalisation. Ms Prins is a much sought-after authority in this field. With her clear, inspirational message on sustainability, she bridges the gap between companies, governments and economic sectors. She is also a member of the Dutch Committee for Entrepreneurship and Finance.

In 2009, in her capacity as CEO, she was named Businesswoman of the Year. That same year, Priva received the first Cleantech Star awarded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Ms Prins is an honoured alumna of Erasmus University Rotterdam, and in 2015 she was acknowledged as an influential leader for sustainability by AACSB International.

To inspire city authorities, mayors, architects, urban planners, entrepreneurs and ordinary individuals to re-think the development of cities by creating space for food production, Ms Prins founded the Sustainable Urban Delta Foundation. The foundation aims to become a community where those who seek to share ideas and specific needs for sustainable initiatives can connect with one another. She believes that this will create new opportunities on a social, ecological and economic level, solving many of today’s environmental problems caused by current food production methods.

About PrivaPriva is a high-tech company that develops hardware, software and services in the field of climate control, energy saving and optimal reuse of water. With almost 500 staff members, 16 local offices in 13 countries and over 450 international installation partners, Priva delivers sustainable solutions and services in more than 100 countries.

With its unique combination of hardware, software and services Priva is perfectly positioned to contribute to sustainable urban deltas: cities where everyone can enjoy a healthy living and working environment and have access to safe and nutritious food.

The Netherlands Pavilion: Uniting Water, Energy and Food The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai is the embodiment of the innovative and sustainable solutions the Netherlands can offer in the areas of water, energy and food and related fields. The pavilion was designed in close collaboration between the Dutch firms V8 architects, Kossmanndejong, and Witteveen+Bos and the Switzerland-based firm Expomobilia.

The joint team created a biotope, essentially a miniature world where the climate is controlled naturally. The water, energy and food sectors are closely linked, and in the Netherlands we use this connection to our advantage to develop sustainable solutions. At the pavilion, we show how the three sectors can be linked to develop unique, integrated solutions and thus create a more sustainable world. We showcase innovative answers to global issues like water scarcity,

food security and the energy transition. For example, we will extract water from the desert air to create an indoor climate where we can grow food, such as mushrooms. We will also be generating our own energy. In our biotope these solutions are presented on a small scale, but they have the potential to be scaled up.

Besides creating a circular system in our biotope, we also aim to keep the pavilion’s ecological footprint as small as possible. All the pavilions on the Expo grounds are temporary. So the design team opted for a circular design, in which recycling and reusing materials is key. Furthermore, where possible we have opted to use local materials, reducing the need for transportation. After the Expo, the materials used to build the structure will be repurposed or recycled locally. The same goes for the interior of our pavilion: all materials used are either bio-based and biodegradable (such as floor tiles made from a combination of fungus and straw) or able to be reused elsewhere.

Thematic Weeks at the Dutch PavilionThe Netherlands’ participation in Expo 2020 Dubai focuses on several Expo theme weeks and trade fairs in the UAE, plus a number of exclusively Dutch theme weeks. This global event will serve as an springboard for business and trade in the region well beyond 2020. This is the time to showcase the kind of innovative and sustainable solutions the Kingdom of the Netherlands is known for, with a particular emphasis on water, energy and food.

Expo 2020 is a chance to work together and build on the growing global consensus regarding the Sustaina-ble Development Goals. These goals provide a frame-work for a more effective way of partnering to create a better future, through solutions that bring together gov-ernments, businesses and knowledge institutions. The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai is an opportu-nity to showcase the kinds of innovative and sustaina-ble solutions the Netherlands can provide in the areas of water, energy and food and the related sectors.

An in-depth, week-to-week event calendar for each theme can be found in the sections that follow, helping you find the right moment to become active at this global event.

At Expo 2020 Dubai we want to help you connect. We

want to put you in touch with your key stakeholders in the UAE, the GCC and the rest of the world. We are doing this by co-creating a programme that is linked to other major events at the world exhibition and the UAE. Trade fairs and theme weeks at Expo are expected to be well attended, with delegations from all over the world. By organising theme weeks, the Expo organisa-tion makes sure that you meet a wide variety stakehold-ers from your sector in just one week.

The Netherlands works with several public-private partnerships, formed solely to co-create an impactful programme. With the collaboration of CEOs, captains of industry, innovators and other bright minds, we de-vised a range of in-depth activities that will enable you to find new partners and opportunities.

We have several economic missions planned that will be closely aligned with the theme weeks at the pa-vilion. Student challenges and scale-up competitions will serve to ensure that innovative solutions to global challenges are presented in the most creative formats. We are boosting international collaboration by organis-ing several high-level summits and by connecting with important trade partners.

If you would like to know which other countries are active in a specific theme week, the Expo team has the information you need. Please reach out to us at [email protected].

Event Calendar

Climate & Biodiversity WeekWe find ourselves at a crucial juncture, a time in which we must take decisive collective action to protect our planet, and the life it sustains, for future generations. It is an opportunity for us to take our place in history as the generation that stepped up to rein in climate change. By adapting human activity to operate within Earth’s planetary bounda-ries, a sustainable future is within our grasp. A new global system, defined by circular economies powered by renew-able energy, will ensure that polar regions can be protected from the effects of global warming, and that life on land and in our oceans can be free from the threat of extinction.

Week 4003/10 – 09/10

The Dutch contribution to Climate and Biodiversity Week is twofold: there will be a strong focus on climate adaptation and the best the Netherlands has to offer in mitigating measures. Given the overlap with the WETEX exhibition in Dubai, we will also focus on renewable energy sources (solar power) and water technology.

The climate is changing. That much is clear. We also know that the effect of these changes are potentially far-reaching. But there is considerable uncertainty about the extent and speed of developments. How can we, despite that uncertainty, tailor our policy and investment decisions in the present to cope with climate change in the future? How can we make our infrastructure and cities resilient to climate change?

Climate change affects not only our built environment but also the natural environment. Understanding how habitats change and adapt is crucial to enabling sustainable and future-proof developments. We are beginning to understand how past developments have impacted the climate. We are now seeking to limit this impact and develop in a climate-neutral way, e.g. by thinking in terms of a circular economy or by devising compensation projects for nature. But what if we can come up with a truly climate-positive way of shaping our world, not by limiting the impact on climate and the environment, but by creating op-portunities for nature and biodiversity in everything we design? Dutch organisations are working together to further this paradigm shift in an integrated way, and they are looking for partners around the world to build a better future together.

The programme of Climate and Biodiversity week will consist of inspiring items like:- Climate Interactive (a climate change simulation tool)- The Utrecht Sustainability Game Jam- Dubai Citizen- Sustainable marine design: developing marine infrastructure that has a climate-positive impact- Resilient infrastructure and adaptive pathways.

If you are interested in participating in the Dutch programme for this week and have inspiring contribu-tions of your own, please contact Ahmed Elkadi, Deltares, at [email protected].

Also at the pavilionThe Netherlands has a long track record in the field of climate adaptation. In our own country major in-frastructural projects protect the people from the sea, and innovations are needed to address challeng-es related to rising sea levels. At the pavilion you can take part in seminars, roundtables and presenta-tions on this issue by thought leaders and captains of industry. Furthermore, innovative Dutch companies will have the opportunity to showcase their latest in the field of solar technology, renewable energy and water tech.

Incoming Trade missionsTentative: A delegation focused on renewable energy solutions, solar energy and water technology will visit the WETEX and the Netherlands Pavilion. This will provide an opportunity to reach out to international partners and forge new partnerships in these highly innovative sectors.

Exhibitions, trade fairs and summits in the UAEWETEXThe exhibition aims to integrate all sectors of the energy industry and bring together trade and technical sectors while facilitating the creation of new trade opportunities, stimulating the exchange of ideas and experiences and showcasing the latest innovations. Solar energy and water technology are key sectors at this exhibition. Visit www.wetex.ae for more information.

Space WeekSpace travel and exploration has captured the imagination of generations, and with exponential technological ad-vancement, the dream of space tourism is now closer than ever to being a reality. At the same time, with outer space remaining one of our few truly shared resources, the peaceful and equitable management of this distant realm requires concerted international cooperation among space-faring nations. During this fascinating week we highlight the very latest innovations in space research and travel, while also providing a platform to discuss critical issues.

Week 4217/10 – 23/10

The Netherlands’ contribution to Space Week will focus on the importance of preserving the Earth, from an outer space perspective. During this week the Netherlands will inspire future generations by teaching people about space, planet Earth and technology. Educating future generations will be a key element of our participation in this week. We hope to announce our new partner for this week soon.

This week will welcome several exceptional keynote speakers, flanked by a programme focused on edu-cating young people on Earth preservation. There will be a certain overlap between Space Week and the programme for the International Astronautical Congress in the UAE.

Urban & Rural Development Week Whether in rural or urban settings, access to safe and affordable accommodation is a fundamental right. With more than 70% of the world’s population expected to live in cities by 2050, and over a billion people already living in infor-mal settlements, it is more important than ever to build resilient and sustainable habitats supported by networks of inclusive infrastructure and services. As the pressures on cities and communities escalate, Expo will bring together ex-perts, administrators and private citizens to re-think the way in which habitats – urban and rural, formal and informal – are designed and managed. From innovative transport, sustainable housing and green public spaces to renewable energy and the circular economy, habitats of the future are being imagined with sustainability and inclusivity at their core.

Week 4217/10 – 23/10

The Netherlands is looking forward to showcasing its innovations for a sustainable and liveable city at Expo 2020 Dubai. This week will focus on several themes: water, food, sustainable building and urban mobility.

Water: Water (SDG 6) is a key component of the ‘water, energy and food triangle’, especially in urban areas. Water is needed to produce energy and food and plays a crucial role in climate change and the cities of tomorrow. The Netherlands will focus on the subthemes of ‘climate adaptation’ and ‘water-smart cities’.

During this theme week the Netherlands will lead a city-to-city panel to examine how different cities around the world are coming up with solutions to tackle the two climate extremes: flooding and heat stress. This panel will look at best practices, innovative infrastructure, integrated management of urban environment solutions, water technology tools, community initiatives, nature-based approaches, and ways in which cities are using citizen-outreach initiatives. Cities being considered for this exploration include Rotterdam, Chennai, Vancouver, Dubai, Muscat, Copenhagen, Orlando, Tirana, Rabat, Medellín, Santiago, Singapore and Mexico City.

In addition to the high-level, city-to-city panel and presentations on the above-mentioned themes with the multi-city panel, Dutch organisations and selected counterparts around the world will have an opportunity to present their solutions in two in-depth workshops for an international audience of deci-sion-makers and possible partners. The event will integrate the voices of young professionals through a session led by Wetskills, featuring strategies devised by teams of young experts in the UAE and the Nether-lands who have joined forces on urban resilience challenges. Customised matchmaking, network events and seminars will also complement the activities to help participants make meaningful connections.

Matchmaking, network events and seminars are important elements in this week.

Food security in Urban areasHundreds of megacities will arise in the years ahead, and they will want to produce their food locally. The Netherlands, as one of the most innovative food producers in the world, has what it takes to feed these megacities. In 2030 five billion people will be living in cities, most of them in metropolises of more than a million people. During the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also in the years before, there has been an increase in local demand for fresh, sustainably produced food.

The Netherlands is taking part in a global effort to develop solutions to feed these megacities, and acceleration is necessary in order to develop new markets with innovative concepts, such as advanced greenhouse systems and indoor farming. Indoor facilities are able to eliminate water waste by recycling the same water throughout their operation. Indoor agriculture also reduces risks to the food supply chain. Volatility decreases the closer you get to the supermarket shelf.

The Netherlands will organise dedicated ‘Feeding Megacities Seminars’ that set out a future-proof, sus-tainable supply system for fresh food.

Business matchmaking, networking receptions and seminars with a focus on feeding megacities will highlight Dutch involvement in food issues.

The Netherlands Offshore Energy Transition WeekThe Netherlands is a very densely populated and energy-intensive country which serves as a major energy hub for many European counties. It has five big industrial clusters, large deposits of natural gas, excellent infrastructure and a highly educated population. The energy consumption in the Netherlands is mainly in the form of natural gas, imported coal and oil, plus an increasing amount of renewable energy. The Netherlands is in the process of transitioning to fully renewable energy. During the Offshore Energy Transition Week, several theme-related activities are scheduled to take place at the Netherlands Pavilion. Find out below where you can plug in. www.topsectorenergie.nl/en

Week 45/4612/11 – 18/11

Water, energy and food security are global issues. The Netherlands is working hard to tackle them. With such a large part of the country below sea level, we have had to protect our land from the powers of nature for centuries. And when it comes to energy, we are reducing our dependence on fossil fuels as we transition towards a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy system. We are taking the lead in the development of alternative energy sources and technologies.

ENERGY IN THE NETHERLANDS Over the past decades, we have built wind farms in the sea and heated homes and offices with recycled energy from datacentres and greenhouses. Stands out by resourcefulness, applied science and ‘can do’ mentality in strong collaborations of Government, business, knowledge institutes, we are keen to share projects and innovations that showcase our strong capability in connecting sectors, humanity and technology with a sustainable mind-set.

EMBRACING THE ENERGY TRANSITIONWith abundant availability of natural offshore resources at our doorstep, an excellent energy infrastructure and a well-educated population, The Netherlands has an impressive track record of over more than half a century on making different offshore energy solutions working together. Now, new insights and our commitment to the Paris agreement targets towards net zero emissions in 2050, are driving spectacular innovations to tackle climate change. These technological innovations, as well as changing behaviour, a broad view on economics and system integration, are essential to expedite the energy transition. Key topics in the transition towards net-zero emissions include: Renewable energy (wind & solar), (green) hydrogen and System integration

GET INSPIRED BY THE DUTCH APPROACHAttending The Netherlands Offshore Energy Transition Week is particularly suitable for international stakeholders who want to get inspired by the Dutch Approach or who are interested to build on partnerships with Dutch private or public parties. The sessions will bring in-depth knowledge on Dutch innovative strength by showcasing concrete expertise on energy transition related topics. During the programme lessons learned from the Dutch energy transition will be shared as well as long term perspectives to start discussions with (potential) partners.

Global Goals WeekThe United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are our global blueprint for a better world, and a state-ment of our collective ambition for dignified and equal opportunities for all. This Expo is an unparalleled opportunity to mobilise citizens around the Global Goals. Events during this week will take stock of how far we have come, exam-ine the role played by various actors – including individuals – with regard to the SDGs, and explore how we can act together to chart a way forward.

Week 316/01 – 22/01

The programme for the Netherlands Pavilion for the Global Goals Week will focus on several themes linked to the SDGs: water, food, energy, sustainable and smart solutions and more. With the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and the Water, Energy and Food Trilateral Summit, the Global Goals week features a packed programme.

WaterTheme: Water, Energy & Food for Cities, Industries and Agriculture

Global challenges - integrated local solutions

The Netherlands is partly man-made. We engineer our world by being both practical and creative. That is also how we look at the water cycle. It’s not about doing more of the same on a larger scale but rather about finding new solutions that take the water cycle to the next level, in a practical, efficient, sustainable and cost-effective way. It is a continuous revolution, in cooperation with national and international part-ners and experts. Living in a challenging environment, the Dutch have had to be inventive throughout their history. It is this mindset that has made us look for new approaches and techniques time and again, constantly developing our knowledge into new innovations. It made us experts on specific niches within the field of water technology.

By 2050, an estimated 9 billion people will live in large urban areas. Clean water for people, industry and food production will become a challenge. This is why the contribution of the Core Team Water to the Expo programme for the Netherlands Pavilion focuses on these very areas: solutions for cities, industry and agriculture.

The Netherlands will hold a global water seminar focused on global challenges and solutions as well as regional issues within the GCC region. We seek to foster cooperation on water issues in the Gulf region and around the world through local partners, while seeking the best approach to forming partnerships and finding solutions to existing challenges.

Sub-thematic focus:• Water management / ground water management / IWRM• Water storage / water distribution• Ecosystem restoration / Flood management / NBS• Drinking water technology• Smart water technologies / NRW / asset management• Desalination / Zero-brine technologies• Renewable energy sources for desalination• Decentralised water treatment• Reuse of wastewater / wastewater treatment plants• Water for agriculture use• Water for food production

The above-mentioned water seminar will be planned around the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), which takes place from 17 to 19 January 2022. In terms of content the seminar will also overlap with the trilateral summit between Netherlands, Jordan and the UAE.

16/01 – 18/01 Circular Economy programmeThemes: Circular Building and Infrastructure, Plastics, Waste Management

Dutch cities, businesses and the government embrace the circular economy as one of the solutions to reach their climate and city goals. The Dutch government and cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam have committed themselves to becoming fully circular by the year 2050, by reducing the use of virgin materials by 50% in 2030.

A circular city is a resilient, healthy and competitive city, able to meet the needs of its residents within the natural bounds of what the planet can provide. Core elements of circularity are embedded in each key urban system; from water, to housing and infrastructure, to food and nutrition. As in a circular economy, a circular city keeps resources at their highest potential for as long as possible, through sharing, reusing, repairing, remanufacturing and recycling. But circularity is also about renewable energy, social inclusivity, biodiversity and new coalitions. It takes a shift in mentality to change what has long been considered waste into resources or input for new products and businesses.

How do we design our cities, infrastructure and industrial processes in a way that they are energy positive and their materials can be re-used after the life cycle ends? In Dubai Dutch experts will share their ideas and experiences and look for international business partners to develop ideas and scale up innovations, because the Circular Economy needs world-wide engagement and collaboration. Our supply chains are organised internationally, and we need to collaborate to close the loops.

The Dutch Circular Economy program in Dubai will focus on construction, plastics and waste management, bringing together innovative architects, project developers, service and product suppliers to meet with international developers and construction companies. Discussions of new ways to produce, reduce and re-use and recycle plastics are high on the European and Dutch agenda. We have an opportunity to discuss collaboration in the region where most of the virgin materials are being processed. Join us at the Netherlands Pavilion to talk with representatives of Dutch and international circular economy hotspots. Below is the programme drawn up by Holland Circular Hotspot (HCH) for the Netherlands Pavilion.

Food, Agriculture and Livelihoods WeekFrom farm to plate, the food value chain is an integral part of society, providing income and livelihoods for billions. But the way we currently cultivate our food is a significant contributor to climate change, through deforestation, land degradation, pollution and food waste. Expo is a platform that brings together stakeholders across value chains to spotlight localised solutions to food, nutrition and farming challenges. The programme will explore how to grow food sustainably in order to eat and earn better, encompassing approaches to climate-friendly agriculture and agricultur-al practices that maximise productivity while operating in harmony with the environment.

Week 820/02 – 26/02

Horti/Food programmeHundreds of megacities will arise in the coming years, and they will want to produce their food locally. We have the blueprints and the products. We already offer support to New Orleans and New York in the form of flood protection; we can also provide the knowhow to help feed these cities. In this way the Dutch horticulture sector will remain an international pioneer. In 2030 there will be 5 billion people living in cities, most of whom will be in metropolises of more than a million people. Many see this as a challenge, and numerous experiments are taking place worldwide. Even big tech companies like Amazon and Microsoft are looking at food as a growth market.

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, but also in the years before, we have seen an increase in local demand for fresh, sustainably produced food. Many Gulf countries, for example, have consulted Dutch horticulture experts. Indeed, no country is better equipped to deal with this issue than the Netherlands. The Netherlands is already taking part in a global effort to develop solutions to feed megacities (e.g. in the form of the Dutch Greenhouse Delta initiative). Scaling-up and accelerating are necessary in order to develop new markets with innovative concepts, such as advanced greenhouse systems and indoor farm-ing. Indoor facilities are able to eliminate water waste, by recycling water throughout the course of their operations. Indoor agriculture also reduces risk in the food supply chain. Volatility decreases the closer you get to the supermarket shelf.

In this way, we can take Dutch export policy to the next level. Our focus should not only be on exporting as many Dutch products as possible; we also need to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and show the world that our unique knowledge of production processes and indoor farming systems can feed billions of people in megacities, with healthy, fresh and affordable local products. Let us create cross-sectoral consortia with strong and innovative players. Let us mount pilot programmes on indoor farming in megacities. And let us begin to write a new chapter in a highly successful story of how a tiny country is helping to feed the growing global population.

With dedicated ‘Feeding Megacities Seminars’, the NLHortiRoad2DubaiExpo Taskforce wants to highlight the roadmap of the Netherlands at the Dubai Expo, which sets out a sustainable future-proof fresh food supply system. For these seminars, the overall theme will be: ‘Feeding Megacities – the Dutch approach to global food security’. The focus areas of these seminars are sustainable greenhouses and indoor farming.

The Core Team Horti/Food will contribute a full two-day lasting programme. Find all details below and how you can take part.

23 December From 14.00 onwards there will be a tailor-made programme, including a symposium in the Auditorium and Business Lounge at the Netherlands Pavilion. Cultural programme at the Dutch Pavilion

Birthe Leemeijer – “L’Essence de Mastenbroek”

Birthe Leemeijer sought to capture the spirit of one of the oldest polders in the Netherlands and came up with a perfume. L’Essence de Mastenbroek triggers both memory and imagination. The nose is an impor-tant, yet often underappreciated sensory organ. It helps us identify and better appreciate food, and it warns us of dangers, like fire or poison. But it also triggers our memory on an emotional level that far surpasses what a photograph or audio recording can evoke. Scent has the power to transport us to a time and place beyond images and words.

Birthe Leemeijer’s L’Essence de Mastenbroek installation will be on display for the entire duration of the Dubai Expo (from 1-10-2021 to 31-3-2022).

Joep van Lieshout – “Clocks”

Atelier Van Lieshout presents a contemporary memento mori, which doubles as an alarm clock for our species. The crushing gears of time are either counting down to destruction or welcoming a new dawn.

There is only one certainty in life: the passage of time and the inevitability of death. The series of clocks by Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) reminds us of that. In the face of this sobering truth, they imply the end of time itself or at least the conclusion of our current era and its destructive dynamics.

Atelier Van Lieshout’s artwork will be on display for the entire duration of the Dubai Expo (from 1-10-2021 to 31-3-2022).

Berndnaut Smilde – “Clouds”

Berndnaut Smilde has mastered the art of cloud mak-ing – indoor cloud making. His meteorological manipu-lations force us to take a better look at the environment and consider what’s real. His clouds were one of Time magazine’s 10 Best Inventions of 2012; super collector Charles Saatchi immediately bought one photo for his private museum, and once it was posted online, the footage went viral in no time.

Berndnaut Smilde’s artwork is recognisable as a cloud, yet it is somehow floating indoors – obviously not its usual habitat. It’s a natural phenomenon, but man-made. The image infuses something as mundane as the promise of rain with poetic surrealism.

Clouds will be on display for the entire duration of the Dubai Expo (from 1-10-2021 to 31-3-2022).

Vilma Henkelman – “Ceramic pots”

Vilma Henkelman’s ceramics are an exploration of life in clay. They are about connecting with the world’s most basic material and being in the moment. Of all artistic media, pottery is the most down to earth, literally. Wet clay – traditionally moulded by hand – is shaped into utilitarian objects, often vessels used to prepare or store food: containers made of earth, holding what the earth has brought forth. For more information about Vilma Henkelman and her artwork, please visit https://www.vilmahenkelman.nl/.

Henkelman’s artwork will be on display in the Netherlands Pavilion for the entire duration of the Dubai Expo (1-10-2021 to 31-3-2022).

Theo Jansen – Strandbeesten

Theo Jansen has created a whole new species using nothing but plastic tubing, wind and his own imagi-nation. His Strandbeesten are evolving into a low-tech entity with a rudimentary brain and survival skills.

Theo Jansen is a creator in the most fundamental sense of the word. For over 30 years he has been building generation after generation of a new species that will eventually outlive its creator and continue to evolve on its own. Yet his creatures don’t involve multi-million dollar machines or mindboggling gene-splicing technology. Jansen builds his skeletons from yellow plastic tubes held together with tape and rope. Every new generation incorporates lessons learned from its predecessors and is tested on the beaches of The Hague, Jansen’s hometown – hence their name: Strandbeesten (beach beasts). For more information about Theo Jansen and his artwork, please visit https://www.strandbeest.com/.

Theo Jansen’s Strandbeesten will be on display in the outdoor area of the Dubai EXPO site from 1-10-2021 to 4-11-2021.

Kadir van Lohuizen – “Foodland”

Kadir van Lohuizen documents the impact of human activity on our planet and its climate. Innovative food production methods can either provide part of the solution or exacerbate existing problems. The effects of the climate crisis are the subject of Kadir van Lohu-izen’s photo series Rising Tide. Van Lohuizen travelled all around the world to talk to and portray coastal dwellers, as well as the policymakers trying to protect their living environment. Rising Tide presents the human stories behind the data on melting icecaps, salinisation of agricultural land and disappearing islands.

Kadir van Lohuizen’s photo series was on display at the Netherlands Pavilion in February 2021.

Eef de Graaf – “Sustainble islands”

Documentary filmmaker Eef de Graaf took stock of the Netherlands’ testing grounds for the transition to a sustainable society: innovation driven by an increasing sense of urgency. De Graaf originally trained as a figurative painter, and a certain visual sensitivity shines through in her documentary. She portrays Dutch landscapes in the manner of Ruysdael, Van Goyen and other old masters, focusing on man-made vistas under vast, cloudy skies.

Unlike her predecessors, she is fully aware of the fact that this landscape is only ‘on loan’. When she was shooting, the Netherlands experienced two of its hottest and driest summers ever, driving home the urgency of change.

De Graaf’s documentary will be shown at the Netherlands Pavilion in December 2021 and March 2022.

David Middendorp – “Airman”

Airman is an exhilarating duo performance between humankind and technology that explores human consciousness. This innovative piece considers the question of what human consciousness would look like if represented by technology.

In Airman, technology is embodied by a group of drones. The combination of the independently mov-ing dancer and the seemingly independently moving drones create an uncanny effect because of the de-ceptive degree of freedom with which the drones ap-pear to move. The at times almost autonomous dance of the drones raises the deeper question of whether the drones possess free will, a philosophical theme that Middendorp seeks to explore in its relation to .

Technologically, Airman is a continuation of Another Kind of Blue’s earlier piece Newton’s Duet for which a motion-capture operating system was developed that

can control two drones simultaneously. In Airman, this system has been expanded to 12 drones, which have a unique live interaction with the dancer.

Middendorp’s performance will take place on the Netherlands’ National Day, 3 November.

Organisation in Design - Channelling Change: Inside A Designers Brain

Since 2005, Organisation in Design has represented hundreds of international designers, design academies, established brands and labels at events all around the world, calling attention to design in all its multitudinous forms. For curator Margriet Vollenberg, founder of Organisation in Design, it is important to show design not only as a finalised product, but also as a process, study, research or way of thinking. This is a reason for Vollenberg to take a closer look at the specific Dutch design mentality and to show it to the public of the Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai. With the exhibition Channelling Change: Inside A Designers Brain, Vollenberg wants to encourage the exchange of ideas and cross-sectoral collaborations.

With ‘Channelling Change: Inside A Designers Brain’, Vollenberg will show how designers think, create, research and take on problems and challenges. Within

the Dutch design sector, sustainability is no longer simply a precondition; on the contrary, it has become the point of departure. Why create something if it isn’t sustainable and doesn’t help improve people’s lives and the environment? In addition, there are numerous products, processes and projects that have taken their cue from the sustainability problem: (residual) waste, liveability, awareness and smarter ways of working and producing that have less impact on the ecosystem.

Organisation in Design’s exhibition will showcase the end product and highlight the reasoning behind it, featuring the work of 14 Dutch Designers who are passionate about creating a fully sustainable future.

The exhibition of Organisation in Design will be on display in the Netherlands Pavilion in December 2021.

Sponsor opportunities: become a partner of the Netherlands at EXPO

Expo 2020 is unique. Not only is it the first Expo to take place in the Middle East; it is also the most business-minded Expo to date! By getting involved as a sponsor of the Netherlands Pavilion, you will have a unique opportunity to show the world what you have to offer.

How to contributeThere are several ways in which your business can get involved. You can provide goods and services for the pavilion, or offer them at a reduced price. In-cash sponsoring is also an option. In order to allow a large number of businesses of varying sizes to benefit from the sponsorship opportunities, we encourage you to join with others in your sector and submit a joint sponsorship proposal.

Becoming a partnerIn your proposal, we ask you to show how your contribution will strengthen the Netherlands’ participation. Keeping in mind the pavilion’s theme of ‘uniting water, energy and food’, as well as the general theme of Expo 2020 – ‘Connect-ing Minds, Creating the Future’ – businesses can showcase innovations in the fields of water, energy, food or arts and culture.

Read our sponsorship document here for more details about the different opportunities. For more information please contact our Pavilion Director Niels Bouwman: [email protected].
