SEMESTER PATHWAY PROGRAMSA SEMESTER PATHWAY PROGRAM IS YOUR CHANCE TO EXPLORE YOUR STUDY INTERESTS AND PASSIONS, AND STILL KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN.

What do I get at the end?

Upon completion of a semester pathway program, you will receive a report and a certificate of attainment.

THE ESSENTIALS

How do I enrol?

You can only enrol in a semester pathway program

through your school. Contact your school’s VET coordinator

or careers adviser.

Are there any prerequisites?

You must be older than 14 years and 10 months, and

enrolled as a full-time student in a secondary school.

How much does it cost?

Your school can advise you about fee information.

Run over just one semester, you have flexibility plus the opportunity to gain valuable skills over a six-month period. So, how is a semester pathway program different from secondary school subjects? Well…

You will study in an adult learning environment – giving you a taste of post-secondary school study. So, once you enter further study, you’ll already feel comfortable.

Assessment is competency-based – you’re marked as competent or not competent in a specific skill or task, not graded.

Our courses are hands-on – you will get every chance to apply your skills, not simply read about them.

VCAL SENIOR (YEAR 12)

VCALSEN001 Full time (6 months to 1 year) February, July Moorabbin, Waverley

Prerequisites: You have preferably completed Year 11 or VCAL Intermediate. If you are under 17 years old, you have a Transition from School Form signed by your last school principal. Career opportunities: This course is recognised in Victoria as evidence of completion of secondary education (completion of Year 12). All career opportunities that require this are open to successful VCAL senior candidates.Overview: There are two options to complete your VCAL Senior at Holmesglen Vocational College. Both options prepare you well for further education pathways, including certificate and diploma courses, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and beyond. Your choice may simply depend on where you live and what your preferred learning style is. But don’t worry, we can help you make this decision if needed. Plus, as a VCAL student you are expected to have a part time or casual job throughout your VCAL Senior program. This will enhance your work skills and maximise your experience. One day each week is set aside to ensure you can arrange this.

So how do the two options differ?

Moorabbin campus: In this course you will focus on your core studies for six months, then have the flexibility to pathway into your chosen industry course for the following six months. You will complete your core VCAL units over four days per week during your first six months. One day per week is also set aside for you to organise part time or casual work. Then, allocated days will be negotiated for your chosen industry stream in the following six months (these depend on the course you select – you will discuss these pathway options with our careers expert, to identify a course that you wish to pursue, from certificate II, III, IV and diplomas level courses). If you have completed previous industry units (e.g. from VCAL Intermediate, or your previous school), you may be eligible to complete your VCAL Senior within six months, instead of one year.

Waverley Campus: In this course, you can choose to study a combination of core units alongside specialist industry streams. You will complete the main VCAL units over two days each week. During another two days of the week, you will have access to specialist facilities at Holmesglen for industry specific streams. Each stream offers approximately 200 hours of competency training at certificate II or certificate III level, and you will complete two industry streams throughout the year (one per semester). It may also be possible to study a different course of interest while completing the two days of VCAL core. Studying VCAL Senior in these ways will give you your Year 12 qualification and accredited training in your chosen career path at the same time. Plus, one day per week is set aside for you to organise part time or casual work.

Annika MccaffreyVCAL SeniorDiploma of Justice Annika recognises that a life well lived is about making the years count, not simply counting them. Already, in her young life, she has done more than most, embracing a proactive approach to everything she completes.

Part of the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria’s Young Thinkers in Residence, Annika is a strong and leading voice in standing up to family violence. Her goals – the same mentality she brings to the classroom – are about raising awareness and hope.

As part of her admirable social campaign, she was also instrumental in developing a short-film project, ‘The Hidden Victors’. She has presented to state ministers, was featured in an ABC Online story and also interviewed by Women’s Weekly.

All of these motivations coincide with her justice course. Holmesglen has offered her the skills and knowledge to go with her determination.

“Annika was well-respected among the VCAL group and was a positive contributor to all peer discussions and team-based projects,” reflects Vocational College Program Coordinator, Adam Cooper.

In her personal life, Annika is a member of the Highett Bulldogs’ Woman’s Football Team.

RYAN HARRISCertificate I In Retail Services Certificate I In Work Education Ryan knows that nothing worthwhile in life is achieved by staying in your comfort zone.

Having moved from Papua New Guinea, Ryan embraced a new culture and developed his personal and professional skills when arriving at Holmesglen. Everyday tasks, like navigating public transport, were overcome as he settled into life in Australia. He believes an education is about participating in the experiences offered, not simply observing from afar.

During his studies, Ryan undertook work at Coles (Southland) and Bunnings’ Mentone store. These two roles saw him become a respected part of the teams. Moreover, Ryan has completed volunteer work at a local kindergarten.

While his community involvement is admirable, Ryan has also represented what it means to be a Holmesglen student. He performed a main role in a Community and Transitional Education Department drama production and served as an MC at a presentation evening. He was also a volunteer at one of Holmesglen’s key flagship events, Run for Change.

In his leisure time, Ryan plays football for Bentleigh Football Club’s U/19 team.
