hroughout 2013, our ten10 campaign will be looking back at 10 years of innovation at The Royal Marsden – funded by supporters

of the charity – and the impact on cancer patients here and across the UK. It will also look forward to the next 10 years and the exciting developments in cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and care that The Royal Marsden is pioneering. Read more about ten10 and a message of support from the President of The Royal Marsden, HRH The Duke of Cambridge, on page 5.

Supporting the charity over the coming decade will be vital. With the charity’s support, we will be able to invest in innovative technologies, the best personalised care and the latest research, enabling The Royal Marsden to remain a world-class cancer centre, for the benefit of cancer patients everywhere.

We need you to be a part of these exciting changes, and there is a simple way for everyone to get involved. We all have a birthday every year, so in 2013, why not use yours to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity? Simply ask friends and family to make a donation rather than buy you presents. Your birthday will help to fund future innovations in cancer treatment. To donate your birthday, simply visit www.royalmarsden.org/ten10

Finally, we are really looking forward to our 2013 Marsden March. This fantastic event brings together everyone connected to The Royal Marsden: patients past and present, staff and supporters, all walking together to take on cancer. You can register for a place at www.royalmarsden.org/march

A welcome from our Chairman

R. Ian Molson Chairman, The Royal Marsden

Thank you for your continued support.

The Centre for Molecular Pathology (CMP) was offi cially opened on 20 November 2012 by Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Offi cer.

With the help of supporters, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity contributed £2.3 million towards building the CMP, which has been developed in partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research.

The CMP brings together research and clinical experts from multiple locations, helping to dramatically speed up the process of translating the latest research into pioneering methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Working side by side, they will be able to better understand different tumour types and the most effective way to treat them, leading to the development of personalised treatment plans faster than ever before.

Thank you for supporting the development of the CMP, which will make a real difference to patients. For more information on the CMP and to see a short fi lm, visit www.royalmarsden.org/cmp

HOSPITAL UPDATES

The two new MRI scanners will enhance The Royal Marsden’s diagnostic capabilities

he Royal Marsden Cancer Charity is committed to

raising £6.95 million to fund two MRI scanners, and build a bespoke facility in which to house them, as part of a new Diagnostic Imaging Suite at Chelsea.

The new scanners – a 1.5T and a 3.0T – will provide exceptionally clear and detailed images of patients’ tumours. In addition, the scanners will improve the comfort of those patients who find MRI scans a stressful experience, with wider, shorter tunnels and faster scanning times.

The 3.0T scanner will also enable different types of scans to be produced, providing closer detail over a smaller area where

necessary. This means that we will be able to offer relevant patients access to clinical research trials that require this level of detail.

The 3.0T MRI scanner is normally only found in research or private healthcare facilities.

The combination of a 1.5T and a 3.0T in the same clinical MRI facility is

exceptional and very exciting – and will only be possible with the help of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Our patients will have access to the best diagnostic imaging through a combination of MRI technology that is above and beyond NHS standards, providing clinical excellence, maximum patient safety and access to research trials.

Two state-of-the-art MRI scannersNew 1.5T and 3.0T MRI scanners will maximise patient comfort and provide clinical excellence

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity is committed to raising £1.16 million towards the Translational Genetics Laboratory (TGL), a new clinical service that will complement the pioneering work of the Centre for Molecular Pathology (CMP).

While the CMP will look at the molecular make-up of a tumour and determine the most appropriate treatment, the TGL will use genetic tests to look at an individual patient’s genetic make-up, and how this may influence the most effective treatment for them. The latest genetic tests will enable us to better diagnose a patient’s cancer and develop treatment plans that target their causal gene.

Initially, the TGL will focus on breast and ovarian cancer patients, as these types of cancer are known to have a high prevalence of causal genes that determine effective treatment. However, our aim is for all patients at The Royal Marsden to receive a genetic test as part of their diagnosis and we expect this to be possible within the next three years. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.royalmarsden.org/genetics

TEN10 CAMPAIGN

A decade of innovation

In 2013, our ten10 campaign will celebrate 10 years of innovation funded by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and set out our vision for the next decade. With your help, The Royal Marsden can stay at the forefront of cancer care and personalised treatment

he Royal Marsden is a world-leading cancer centre, pioneering the latest

developments in cancer diagnosis, treatment and care and leading the way in cancer research. Over the past decade, supporters of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity have raised £100 million, enabling us to invest in a wide variety of innovative projects with direct benefit to patients. But such innovations are expensive, and we need to raise a further £100 million to make our ambitions of more personalised cancer treatment a reality.

Your support has already made a huge difference. In 2011, we helped fund the purchase and installation of groundbreaking radiotherapy treatment CyberKnife, which uses a robotic arm and image sensors to track the movement of a tumour, allowing hundreds of radiation beams to be delivered with pinpoint accuracy.

In 2007, the hospital became the first site in the UK to install the da Vinci S surgical robot, thanks to funding provided by the charity.

The state-of-the-art robot performs operations with incredible precision and speed, which results in shorter recovery times.

The Oak Centre for Children and Young People opened in September 2011 following a £16-million appeal. The 31-bed facility is Europe’s leading centre for children and young people with cancer, seeing almost 600 inpatients and 5,000 day patients every year. Its dedicated drug development beds also give young patients access to early-stage clinical trials on site.

The charity’s current appeal responds to our 10-year vision

to provide personalised treatment for every patient.

The Translational Genetics Laboratory (TGL) will complement the work of the Centre for Molecular Pathology (CMP). The CMP will look at the molecular make-up of a tumour and help determine the most appropriate treatment to target the tumour effectively. The TGL will use the latest genetic testing to look at a person’s inherited genetic make-up, enabling us to better diagnose their cancer and to develop personalised treatment plans that target their causal gene.

GET InvolvEd

Support the charity in raising £100 million and ensure that The Royal Marsden remains at the forefront of cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and care.

The past decade is only half the story, as there is still much more to be achieved. Over the next 10 years, there will be even greater progress. But we need to raise funds to support the hospital on this journey. Throughout 2013, our world-renowned consultants will be sharing their visions for the next 10 years and the exciting developments that hold so much potential, highlighting why your support will continue to be so important.

Professor David Cunningham, Director of Clinical Research and Development at The Royal Marsden, says: “Further investment

in clinical and laboratory facilities is crucial if we are to continue our advances in personalised medicine. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity has helped tremendously over the past 10 years, funding the Drug Development Unit in Sutton and contributing to the building of the Centre for Molecular Pathology, among other projects.

“If we don’t continue to invest in research, we won’t be able to continue making a meaningful global contribution to how we advance the treatment of cancer. Being able to fund state-of-the-art equipment and resources brings in the best people and delivers the best research.

“The support of the charity over the next 10 years will allow us to continue to go above and beyond, delivering high-quality research and facilities to match.”

FUNDRAISING

Registration is open for next year’s Marsden March, which will take place on Sunday 17 March 2013.

Last year, 3,700 people took part and raised an amazing £1.2 million to support cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and care at The Royal Marsden. The youngest walker was aged just four months and our eldest was 85.

In 2013, we have 4,500 places available – 3,500 for the full 14-mile walk from The Royal Marsden’s Chelsea hospital to the Sutton hospital, and 1,000 for the family-friendly five-mile route between King George’s Playing Fields in Morden and The Royal Marsden in Sutton.

At the finish line, there will be a

thank-you party for all our walkers and their supporters, with live music, a barbecue, children’s entertainment and a selection of stalls and activities.

The Marsden March is a great opportunity for everyone involved with The Royal Marsden to come together, raise money and take on cancer. Walk with us and help us raise more than £1 million this year.

On your marks for The Marsden March

Every year at The Royal Marsden, we place thousands of stars on our Christmas trees, each celebrating the life of a loved one. By sponsoring a star with a suggested donation of £15, the name of someone special to you will be handwritten on a gold star and placed on a tree at either Sutton or Chelsea, and you’ll receive a star lapel badge to wear in their honour. There will also be a carol service at 6pm on Tuesday 11 December in Sutton and at 6pm on Thursday 13 December in Chelsea. Order a Celebrate a Life star by post before 26 November, or online at www.royalmarsden.org/star before 30 November.
