Return to Learn LegislationMichigan's "Return to Learn" legislation (Public Act 149 sec. 104.9) was signed into law on August 20, 2020. As part of the required COVID-19 plans, districts must identify educational goals expected to be achieved for learners during the 2020-21 academic year. The law states: the Goals must include an assurance that the district shall select a benchmark assessment or benchmark assessments that are aligned to state standards and an assurance that the district shall administer the benchmark assessment or benchmark assessments to all pupils as prescribed under section 104 to determine whether pupils are making meaningful progress toward mastery of these standards.

The assessment(s) must be administered to all pupils in grades K-8 within the first nine weeks of school and again before the end of the school year to measure proficiency in reading and mathematics.

SLCS Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan Goal Reporting

Mid Year Date: January 19, 2021

Summary: South Lyon Community Schools administered the MAP Growth Assessments during our fall testing period. This period ran from September - early November in grades K-12. The district has used this data, along with classroom data to engage in planning around instructional strategies to continue to monitor and improve student growth. Currently the district is engaged in the Winter testing window for grades K-8 and will have growth data for those grade levels once this window has closed. District staff will use this data to further inform instructional decisions in those grade levels. After the Spring administration is complete, district-wide growth data will be shared for grades K-10.

Special Education

Subgroup data summary: We have subgroups in the following categories-

● Ethnicity (Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Multi-ethnic, and White) ● English Learners ● Economically Disadvantaged ● Special Education

A subgroup must have at least 30 students at a grade level to report a subgroup. Some subgroups or grade levels within a subgroup are not reported for this reason. SLCS staff use the subgroup data to help inform instructional support processes.

SLCS Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan Fall Trend Data

Summary: At the January 13, 2021 study session, the Board of Education requested data comparing NWEA scores from this fall to previous years. The K-1 MAP Growth assessment was reworked so it is difficult to compare fall 2021 results to previous years. In addition, the norms were updated by NWEA so a direct year to year comparison is challenging as well. However, in general, our fall district grade level mean RIT remains comparable to previous years (where we have testing data available).

Mathematics Trend Data 2017 - 2020

*Students in 2nd grade took the K-2 test in 2017-18, but then moved to the 2-5 test in 2018-19 and have taken that assessment 19-20 and 20-21. **Note: Empty cells indicate grade levels not tested during that testing period.
