The creator of Sherlock Holmes

_f_ Although the Doyle family were wealthy, Arthurs father was the black sheep of the family because of his problems with alcohol.

1 ___ She loved books and was a wonderful storyteller. Arthur described how his mothers voice would sink to a horror-stricken whisper when she reached a particularly dramatic part of a story.

2 ___ He was sent to a boarding school for seven years and hated it. His only moments of happiness were when he wrote to his mother and when he played sport.

3 ___ He practised medicine and specialised in eye care until 1891, when he became a full-time writer. He returned to work as a doctor during the South African War (18991902).

4 ___ Other Sherlock Holmes novels followed. At one point, Doyle felt that he had had an overdose of Sherlock Holmes and killed his detective in The Final Problem, published in 1893. However, Doyles readers were so disappointed that he decided to bring Sherlock Holmes back to life in the story The Empty House, published in 1903. By the 1920s, Doyle became one of the highest-paid writers in the world. He died in 1930.
