    READING- 20 POINTS

    HOW I CURED MY WORKAHOLISM

A KATIE JAMESI was promoted and my workload doubled. I started putting work before my family andbecoming preoccupied with my job. I realized I had to change, so I did three things: I only wentto essential meetings to make me more efficient, I never worked more than one hour beyond

office hours, and I asked my boss to employ an assistant for me. I gave him a detailed jobdescription of the new assistants post and a proposed salary for the position, and he agreed.

B MARK SPENCERMy last job dominated my life. I got over it by finding the most productive way of working, sorting the urgent from the important, and the important from the trivial. Often, urgent thingsarent urgent at all. Id usually have meetings that were really just gossip sessions, but I hadconvinced myself I was working hard. Theres pressure on people to work late, but I dont needto because I can close a deal twice as fast as younger managers because I have moreexperience.

C ALISON PARKERIn a previous job, I worked very hard, and, as my social life centered on work, I became veryboring. If I had to make small talk that wasnt about my job, I was lost. It took up so much of my lifethat I even chose a colleague as my husband. The way I solved it was to start eveningclasses in something completely unrelated to my job, where I could meet people outside work.

D TOM HARRISI had set up my own business and really worked hard, doing 12-hour days, bringing work homeand even taking my mobile phone on family holidays. Recovering from workaholism was reallydifficult for me. I didnt think the business could survive without me. You have to be honest anddiscover why you work so much. In my case, it was self-importance, not efficiencyor productivity.Once I realized that, I was fine.

E KAREN JAMESI got to the stage where I was depressed and my health was suffering. I decided to hire whatscalled a life coach, someone who helps you sort out your life! My coach made me realize thatby being a workaholic I was not accepting responsibility for other areas of my life that neededattention. Now I never work at weekends, and I concentrate more on the other areas of my life.

    1. You have received the following e-mail. Write a short reply (5060 words).Include the following points.

Apologise for the mistakes that were made.

Explain that the employee who handled the arrangements is no longer with your

    company.

Offer to arrange free transfers and accommodation for two visitors next time a meeting is

    held in Hong Kong.

    To: Agnes Wong

    Subject: Hong Kong travel arrangements

    Dear Mrs Wong,

Last month my company arranged fights, ground transfers and hotel accommodation through

your company, Star Travel. We were hosting a meeting for our regional managers here in

Hong Kong. We were very unhappy with the results of the booking.

Though all of the fight arrangements were acceptable, two members of our group were

not met at the airport as agreed, though their fights arrived on time. After waiting to be met,

they finally took taxis. However, when they arrived at the hotel, it turned out that their

booking had been changed to a different hotel. They again had to take taxis to get to the rightlocation.

We were treated very poorly by Star Travel and feel we are entitled to compensation.

Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss how we may resolve this situation.

    Yours sincerely,

    Ms Eleanor Adams
