At the start of my term of office I said 2012 would be a year of celebration – and that it was! I am sure that this year will be just as memorable. The success of the London Olympics was only possible because of the inspirational volunteers with a ‘can do’ attitude. It seems this quality is rooted in our community. I have been lucky enough to spend time with groups and clubs whose volunteers strive to make our Town a better place for all. I thank you for everything you do. Autumn was full of many great Mayoral engagements, including special anniversaries of the Littlehampton Badminton & Squash Club, Littlehampton Bonfire Society and Arun Community Church. I officially unveiled the Wick War Memorial plaque and enjoyed many Christmas concerts. I would also like to thank the primary schoolchildren who took part in the Mayoral Christmassy Card Competition (see page 4). I look forward to 2013 and what is in store for Littlehampton. On behalf of my colleagues and the staff at the Town Council I would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous new year. A cold and crispAutumn day providedthe backdrop for therededication andunveiling of the WickWorld War I WarMemorial Plaque.

Having been cared forby the Museum team, following its dramaticrescue from a WickHall cleaning cupboardin 2009, LTC werethe driving forcebehind the project toconserve, restore andredisplay this specialcommemorative plaque, which now includes anaddendum to hang alongside it, bearing thenames of the nineteen brave men who wereomitted from the original roll of honour.Unveiled by the Mayor, Cllr. Emma Neno ata ceremony that saw more than 100 peopleturning out to pay their respects, includingrelatives of fallen soldiers, LTC has pledgedto continue to care for the Memorial, working with Wick Hall to ensure it’ssafe preservation.

Cllr Alan Gammon, Chair of LittlehamptonTown Council’s Community ResourcesCommittee spoke to Progress saying:“An important occasion to mark a veryspecial project, it seems right that the WickMemorial, originally paid for and erected bythe Wick Community, is returned to this mostappropriate place of worship.”

CONTINUED FROM COVER: The structure, which willinclude a covered area that can be used as a shelterfrom the elements when not in use as a stage, attracted over 24 expressions of interest fromdesigners, who each considered the brief of aspecially assembled Members Working Group, drawnfrom Littlehampton Town Council in partnership withArun District Council. Short listed candidates were theninvited to showcase their concepts, as well as a basicdesign that met a range of criteria and demonstrated aclear understanding of the site.

Asked to develop their concepts, incorporating theviews expressed in an initial stakeholder group whichincluded Council Members and Officers, representatives from music and the arts and localbusinesses, the BFLS design will bring a versatile andunique landmark to the Town.

Whether you want a shady spot in which to sit andenjoy an ice cream or somewhere to demonstrate yourskills as a demon juggler, singer or dancer,Littlehampton’s latest new build promises to be areal showstopper.

LAUNCHED JUST OVER A YEAR AGOthe Community Stall at the Friday market in theHigh Street has been warmly welcomed by localcharities and voluntary organisations, with over 30taking advantage of the free pitch.Using it as a platform to raise their profile, collectdonations and to engage with Littlehamptonpeople, the idea was dreamed up by a

I’m extremely lucky to have a job where I canaffect people’s lives through sport and physical activity and doing it in myhome town makes me even more proud. The talent that exists within thetown is bursting at the seams! Carrying the Paralympic torch was the mostspecial moment of my life and I was very happy to share my experiencewith those who love sport in the town.”

PROJECT82 AThrivingYouthServicesProject in theTownAsking about her work with Littlehampton’s young people, Progress catchesup for a cuppa and a chat with Project 82 Manager Emma Biffi.YOU’RE LITTLEHAMPTON BORN AND BRED. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE?I started to volunteer for The Wire Project at 18. It was during my first play scheme, ‘LiveWires,’ that I really knewthat this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my working life. I was passionate about helping and working withyoung people, but I really wanted to make a difference in my local community and the area I grew up in. I had a goodchildhood and felt lucky that I had been given good opportunities by my parents. I felt that I should give somethingback to help young people living in the same place. This town can be very misunderstood at times, and so can itsyoung people. I want to try and help as many young people growing up here as possible.

WHY ARE SCHEMES LIKE PROJECT 82 SO IMPORTANT? They change lives. When the young people were asked why Project 82 wasso important to them their replies included things like “it keeps me off the streets,” “I have somewhere safe to socialise” and “it’s the onlyplace where I feel respected and not pressurised into being something that I don’t want to be.” Project 82 seeks to promote young

people’s personal and social development andenable them to have a voice, influence and place intheir communities and society as a whole. Therelationships of trust that build up between the youngpeople and the youth workers here are a key way inwhich the most disadvantaged young people accessservices that can significantly improve their lives.

WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB?Youth work is very challenging but amazinglyfulfilling. It is a privilege and a real responsibility towork with young people. I work with a diverse groupof young people in a wide range of settings, doing avariety of activities, and addressing a broad range ofissues on a weekly basis. Every day is so differentand offers new challenges and excitement. I couldnot imagine wanting to do anything else.

HOW ARE YOUTH SERVICESDEVELOPING IN LITTLEHAMPTON?Project 82 is building strong links with the ArunCommunity Church and The Keystone Centre inWick. Project 82 and ACC have launched a clubnight session on Tuesdays at the new JubileeCentre at Southfields. This is greatly needed as theYouth Wing based on site at TLA has now closedand it is important that there is Youth Workprovision in all areas of Littlehampton.

WHAT HAS PROJECT 82 BEEN UP TO?In this year’s Bonfire Night Procession Project 82embraced a ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ theme. With theyoung people and staff dressed in yellow rain macsand carrying umbrellas, they sang and danced thenight away. Despite the freezing cold and dampconditions spirits remained high and we wereawarded first prize in the Youth Float category!

Residents in Littlehampton are set to benefit fromreal improvements in health services in the town asthe NHS changes.Littlehampton Town Council and Arun District Council areworking with the new NHS organisation, Coastal West SussexClinical Commissioning Group, to look at how health servicesand healthcare can be further developed in the town.Coastal West Sussex CCG will take over responsibility for

planning and buying the majority of health services in Arun from the primary care trust in April 2013. The CCG is led by groupsof experienced local GPs, clinicians and managers to ensure health services are meeting the needs of local people.Already there has been progress in Littlehampton. Earlier this year the town became a pioneer site for the introduction of a newand ground-breaking way of caring for people with complex health needs.Known as Proactive Care, it brings together health and social care professionals to form one integrated team, joining up careand support for individuals who need it most. The first team in Littlehampton, covering the east of the town, went live in Octoberand the second team, which will cover the west of the town, is due to go live in January.Further developments are expected next year and we will continue to keep you updated via Progress.
