PROJ 102

• To introduce the students the practice of a project work

• To let the students experience– Team-work– Planning and conducting a project

• To challenge students’ creative abilities

How do we achieve the goals?

• A project based course • No regular lectures

– An introductory lecture about the course and three workshops given by the Writing Center

• A group of students (typically 4-6 students) will conduct a project during one term

• Students (individually or in groups) will choose from a variety of projects offered every term

• Projects are proposed by the faculty members (sometimes by graduate students as well)

Requirements for PROJ 102

• No prerequisites, 3 credits• Offered every term• Taken at freshman or sophomore year• If you entered the university before

2013:– The course is mandatory for only FENS students.

Prerequisite for Summer Internship. – The course is a free elective for stıudents who

choose FASS or SOM.

• If you entered the university in Fall 2013: – The course is mandatory for ALL students.

How do the students register to PROJ 102?

• Two step registration– Register to the course (by using the Web for

Students (SUIS) as you register to other courses) – Register to a project (by the PROJ 102 on-line

system until the add-drops)

DO NOT LEAVE THE PROJECT REGISTRATION TO THE LAST DAY OF ADD-DROPS !

• Students who fail to complete both steps will not be registered to PROJ 102

Get in touch with the Supervisor of your

favorite project(act quickly!)

Undetermined projects

• If a project description is blank, you need to determine the project title and description together with the project supervisor

• You can gather information about the research areas and interests of supervisor faculty members from their websites

• You are encouraged to contact the supervisors and determine a project together

• Do NOT send mass emails to all supervisors, contact each one separately

REGISTRATION

• If the contact supervisor agrees to give you the project, provide your:– name/surname– student ID number– phone number (preferably cell phone)

• Confirm that the contact supervisor has added you to the project by logging in

If it does not let you in, it means the contact supervisor did not register you yet

In this case, get in touch with the contact supervisor again and remind him/her to do so

But if you can login (meaning you have been registered to theproject), you will then see:

Q. What happens if you cannot complete the project registration Step 2 ?

A. Drop PROJ 102 before the end of the add-drop period

Main Steps of the PROJ 102

STUDENTS HAVE TO ATTEND

• INTRODUCTORY LECTURE • 3 WORKSHOPS (1LGD* each)

– Attend in your own group• POSTER SESSION (1LGD) • PRESENTATION SESSION• REGULAR MEETINGS WITH THE

SUPERVISOR OF THE PROJECT• Details of each stage will be discussed later

*1LGD: One Letter Grade Down (i.e. A to A-).Your overall “letter grade” of the class will be affected

Reports in PROJ 102

• Check calendar for the deadlines of– Proposal– Progress– Final Report

• For each report, there will be a Writing Center workshop (check calendar and announcements and do not miss the workshop!) (If you miss a workshop it is a LGD)

• You have to write your reports using the guidelines and rules provided in the workshops

Project Proposal

• Describes your project and your plan to realize the project

PROJECT PLANNING

• Definition and scope of the project• Approach and methodology• Work breakdown structure (WBS)• Assignment of team members to the WBSs• Resource requirements based on the WBS• Timetable based on the WBS• Expected results and deliverable(s)

Evaluation

• The supervisors and co-supervisors

of your project will read and evaluate

your Project Reports.

• After all the grades are entered, you will be able to see the average of all the grades given to your proposal.

Progress Report

• What is a Progress Report?– A report that you explain the current

progress of your project.– What decisions you’ve had to make.– Any deviations from the initial plans,

and what are the reasons for these changes.

– How much you have accomplished, and what remains to be done?

Final Report

• What is a Final Report?– A report that provides an extensive

information about your project.

– You should provide information about • the project (what you did),• the realization of the project (how you

did it)• the results (what you obtained and what

your conclusion is)– Follow the guidelines given in the

Writing Center Workshops

Important details:

• Make sure you upload a report before its deadline (1LGD!)

• Reports handed or sent to the project supervisors by e-mail do not count as a valid submission

• One team members uploads the report, all team will be able to see it in the “Documents” page.

• Make sure your file is in .pdf format, can be opened with Adobe Reader and smaller than 50 MB

Poster Session

• In the last week of the term (see calendar).

• All PROJ 102 posters are posted on the poster boards one day before the poster session.

• During the two hour poster session, at least one group representative must be ready to present their poster

• ALL posters should contain a “Title” with “Names” of contributors written below the title and the sections: “Abstract”, “Results” and “Conclusions”.

• Details will be explained in the last Writing Center Workshop

BUDGET

• Talk to your supervisor for your project budget!

• Your expenditures may not be reimbursed.

Project Presentation

• In the weeks of the final exams, a half-day period is reserved for oral presentations of the projects.

• Typically 3-7 project groups will share the same classroom and time slot

• Your supervisor, as well as other project supervisors and students will attend your presentation as audience.

• Total presentation period is 15 minutes for each project group (extra 5 minute will be given for discussions, questions and answers)

Project Presentation

• Attendance will be checked by the supervisors

• Uploading the presentations is voluntary

Grading

• The supervisors and co-supervisors read and evaluate project proposals, reports and presentations.

• After the grades are entered, you will be able to see the average of all the grades given to your work at the PROJ 102 website.

Grading Policy

Calculation of your overall grade:

10 %: Proposal 15 %: Progress Report15 %: Overall Presentation + Poster20 %: Final Report 40 %: Individual Performance: contribution to the project performance in presentation attendance to meetings with the supervisor

One-Letter-grade-down [1LGD] policy is applied to:

All students of a group: each time they fail to submit their reports in time, or if there is no poster or poster presenter during the poster session

Individually to a student: each time he/she fails to attend any of the three common activities (Three Workshops). Only exemption from 1LGD is by a medical report confirmed by the SU Health Center
