J. H. DES IGN MontageDescription: A Photoshop montage that is spiritual in nature.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): This project was so great. Once I had an understanding of how to work the Adobe Photoshop tools I could pull myself away from the computer. For this photoshop project I pondered what images I wanted to use in this montage. So as usual, I consulted pinterest. I searched for portraits of people in color or in black and white. Next I looked for some of my favorite quotes that mean something to me; quotes that could mean something to someone else. Next I looked at pictures of nature. After making fi ve different montages I wanted to try something with animals, which led to getting owls, bears, lions and possibly wolves. I settled on Andrew Garfi eld with the lion and the quote “I am convinced that different people awaken different beats in you.” Once I had these things I set out to arranging them properly in photoshop. I set Andrew as the background and copied the picture. Once I had a copy I put a mask on it. Next I added the picture of the black and white lion. I made the picture to the proper size and placed it right over Andrew’s left eye. After I place the lion I went back to the mask on the copy. While on the mask I use the paintbrush tool and change the opacity various times so that I could blend the image of the lion with Andrew. After I fi nished with the paintbrush I added the blue square and made it opaque. Next I added a text box and placed my quote.

Message: I wanted to portray that we all have beasts. The picture of Andrew Garfi eld looks distressed and some of our personal beasts have that effect on us.

Audience: Anyone who agrees with the idea that we have beast in us that are awakened by different people.

Top Thing Learned: When I was working on a different picture I used the quick selection tool to take one section of an image and place it on another. When doing that I had to get the pictures to match and I was able to change the colors so that it didn’t stand out so bad. I also learned that blending takes time and patience.

J. H. DES IGN LogosDescription: Three variations of a logo created in Adobe Illustrator.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): For this project we were to create three different logos that have various styles like type, shape, symbol or illustration. For this project I used Adobe Illustrator for the fi rst time and it was so great. I had a lot of fun fi guring out how to use the tools by watching the instruction videos provided as well as many from Youtube. While creating I used many tools that included: the shape builder tool, the pen tool, the direct selection tool, the shape tool, the line tool, the type box and the eyedropper tool. Before I started messing around with Adobe Illustrator I had sketched some possible designs for my personal logo. Once I had some concepts down I tried to make it happen in Illustrator; most of my logos transformed from there.

Message: Allison Julia Houtz Design

Audience: Those who are looking for someone to design something for them.

Top Thing Learned: The pen tool as well as the direct selection tool. I was able to move the anchors exactly were I needed them.

J. H. DES IGN LetterheadDescription: This project is learning how to match a letterhead and business card design from a personally created logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): For this project I used Adobe Illustrator. For this project I decided to recreate one of my favorite animals the grizzly bear. I had sketched other possibilities out but when I tried to make them they just fl opped. For this project I used the pen tool and the width tool. When creating the logo I had various business ideas like a bear shop, a national park, etc. I decided to stick with recycling because of the way I drew the bear. There was space to put the leaf. After I fi nished creating it in Adobe Illustrator I then moved to creating my Stationary and business card in Adobe InDesign. I started by sketching out ideas and looking at possible layout ideas on Pinterest. I wanted to keep it simple and unifi ed so I kept the same type throughout and added a watermark at about 8% opacity on the page. When working on my business cards I wanted the information to be found quickly and easy to read. For repetition I used the same font as well as colors. I also liked the idea of the watermark so I put that on the back behind the contact info to play with the whitespace.

Message: The company is a recycling center for people to use so that there footprint on the world isn’t as big as others. I chose a bear because they are in the wild and are affect by people’s footprints as well as other animals. I added the green so that I could add the leaf to tie it back to the environment along with the bear.

Audience: Anyone interested in recycling and minimizing their footprint.

Top Thing Learned: How to keep a nice fl ow from the logo to the stationary for the company. I also had a great time learning how to use the width tool.

J. H. DES IGN BrochureDescription: This is a self-made brochure for my Comm-130 class. We had to use the various things from the Adobe suit like Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. I made the new Colorado Flag with the Horsetooth rock as my new logo in Illustrator with the pen tool as well as the shape tool. Then I found the images for the project and edited one of them in Photoshop. After fi nishing that I put them in the correct placement in InDesgin.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. At fi rst I made prototypes of three different brochure possibilities and narrowed it down to the one I wanted to use. After getting the measurements I fi gured out the text I would have and it’s specifi c placement. Next I created my new logo which includes the Colorado state fl ag with a little bit of Fort Collins in it with the Horsetooth rock. I made that logo in Adobe Illustrator. After completing that I moved to the computer to start laying out. This is where is got tricky for me because the measurements got all screwy so I ended up print A LOT. After getting the text done properly and the layout where I wanted it to go I picked my fonts. I really like the Century Gothic because it is light and crisp. I feel like even though Fort Collins is an outdoors city it has a light feel to it. It is a clean town and I wanted that to come across in the type. After fi nishing this project I realized that I should’ve made it a bigger brochure than and 11×8.5.

Message: This is for anyone who wants to travel to Fort Collins, Colorado and see want is there to see.wAudience: People who want to go on an adventure.

Top Thing Learned: How to layout pages that are going back to back in InDesign and having patience when it doesn’t work even after the fi fth try.

J. H. DES IGN Web PageDescription: This is a simple website design to showcase a logo that we have made. We used html and css to create it.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): We starting this project we were given the skeletons to build off of. We had to work in html and css within Text Wrangler.

Message: This is a showcase of my logo that I have made and the creative process that went into its creation.

Audience: This is for anyone who is interested in reading about how I do my work and want to have me to make one for them.

Top Thing Learned: This is the fi rst time I have touched html to actually make something nice. I am nowhere near a pro but I was able to get a hang of it pretty fast. With changing colors, placing the logo and getting the background. I was also able to make the website layout change as you go from bigger to smaller devices or webpage size. One thing I tried to do was add the logos in for twitter, pinterest and wordpress and having the link to my accounts with those from there but that idea crashed after trying countless times.

J. H. DES IGN Event AdDescription: For this project we had to create and Event Ad in Microsoft Word. We had to come up with a fi ctional event/place/time/etc. as well as scan the picture for the project.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): We used Microsoft Word in the Publishing Layout. We had to scan in a photo for the project itself. I started with doodles for the FOCUS principles. I asked myself: What kind of event would I want to go to? The answer: something with furniture. So I planned my message around that but I aimed for an older crowd. After I got that I went and looked for pictures to plan around and pick my colors. I chose shapes that matched the picture for fl ow, gestalt, etc. When I fi nished with that I tried out different types and found two that felt right for not only the ad but also the Event’s subject matter.

Message: The message is an invitation to an annual furniture auction at The Edward’s House: Historic Boutique in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Audience: The audience is for a people age 25-45ish. For people who like gently used/nice furniture.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic, Green

Top Thing Learned: That I hate word and prefer InDesign. I also enjoyed learning how to scan in the necessary pictures for the project. That was the part that I worried about most for this project.

J. H. DES IGN FlierDescription: This is the fi rst project for my Visual Media Course at BYU-Idaho. We were to make a fl ier for a company using a photo, the company logo and the provided information of the event.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): For this project I used Adobe InDesign. I used the many available tools within the program to create the shapes, type the title and body copy. When I understood what the message is and who the audience is I started my sketches. I wanted to make them light in design but informative. I wanted to get away from your normal fl ier look so that it would catch a students eye. Once I chose to do the triangle shape I made sure that the proximity was appropriate and that the alignment helped the viewers eye follow the fl ow of the fl yer appropriately. I was able to repeat the triangle shape through out the piece to create a nice rhythm. After the group critique I made some more changes to increase the appeal to students and help the fl ow.

Message: The message is for college students getting ready to become leaders in their future careers. It is for a three-day seminar where the students who attend will learn leadership techniques and to help students develop marketable attributes.

Audience: Recent College graduates looking to gain a competitive edge in business and how to become a leader in a future career.

Top Thing Learned: One of the top things I have learned rom this project is how to insert pictures and how to get an appropriate distance between the text box and the body copy. Another thing that I learned was that group critiques are important because I, having looked at the same screen for a long time, might have a hard time fi nding things that need touching up. Having their opinion and suggestions was great.

J. H. DES IGN ImagingDescription: For this project we needed to learn basic photography skills, pick a color scheme and then take photos that correspond with that color, use Photoshop to edit the picture and create a poster layout with an original photo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I spend a lot of time in the Scroll offi ce and these three ceramic pieces are things I look at often. I wanted to photograph and I picked my color scheme around them. To be honest I had three or four different color schemes I wanted to try and I settled on the analogous with orange, gold and brick. To take the photo I used my friend Lindsey’s t3i Canon Rebel. I had fun trying to work that camera. I love the look that the natural light has on the ceramic pieces I photographed. After I fi nished taking the pictures I downloaded them and edited them in Photoshop. The specifi c editing techniques I used were: levels, sharpness, saturation and color balance. While using Photoshop “command t” became my best friend as well as my coworker Willy, since he is a Photoshop guru. I had drafted multiple layouts for this photo and some of them depressed me. I had a ridiculously hard time with Photoshop but I made it through! I had planned to list the colors of the swatches with in the rectangles themselves but I liked having the small squares on the left of the picture. I wanted to use the rectangles because it would work well with the ceramic piece that had lines on it. I believe it contrasts well with the other two pieces that have no specifi c set of lines.

Message: I wanted a poster that would be for the BYU-Idaho ceramics group. I also wanted to make sure my color scheme to show my understanding of the color wheel.

Audience: BYU-Idaho students who like ceramics.

Top Thing Learned: I learned how to take pictures with a DSLR camera, photographing things around a specifi c color scheme and how function while using Photoshop.
