In the financial year July 2017 to June 2018 we celebrated our tenth birthday. To look back, we undertook a comprehensive review of our achievements for the first ten years, compiled the key learnings and used them for a final strategic review to prepare the team for the coming year. We held a celebratory event in December to share the report and our successes with our stakeholders and partners and to express our gratitude to the entire Project 90 team.

We are entering our next decade of inspiring and mobilising South Africans towards a sustainably developed and equitable low-carbon future. In working towards a Just Energy Future, we have strengthened our three programmes that encourage youth leadership, community partnerships and influencing energy policy. Our strategic focus has shifted form school clubs to developing individual young leaders and also for supporting community leaders in capacity building to ensure effective engagement and advocacy work, rather than partnering with the whole community. These strategic shifts allow for more individual

capacity building and supporting leadership development for broader impact. Our policy work is strengthened by collaborative efforts and research around the transformative Just Energy Transition, where we facilitate and encourage discussions among stakeholders and aim to ultimately mobilise labour and civil society organisations towards better energy decision making.

Our team has seen some changes, while Hin Wah Li left us after many years to work overseas, we had two Natalies join the team, Natalie Geyser as our communications officer and Natalie Mc Askill to look after the sustainability of our organisation. Also during this period, our longstanding board members Clifford Nxomani and Mpumelelo Ncwadi resigned from our board to undertake new opportunities. We are very grateful for their years of service to the Project 90 mission. Lorna Fuller

WE APPLY FIVE KEY PRINCIPLES TO OUR WORK

Creating leaders whose actions inspire

others to be more aware of climate

change and energy-related

issues.

Encouraging and capacitating

communities to take action to adapt and

tackle the energy challenges they are

facing.

Working towards a sustainably

developed and equitable low carbon

future through collaborative efforts.

Formulating factual arguments and

inspiring action in ourselves and others.

Clear communications and effective advocacy promotes participation

and engagement of civil society in decision making

processes.

In the last year the Policy Team worked towards:

There were many highlights in the last year but one of the biggest achievements was our research on the issues around ownership structures in the energy sector which was met with huge interest. With the changing energy landscape the question of ownership of energy is relevant because it could, if done right, provide the owners or shareholders with a number of benefits. The owner has control over

project outcomes and future planning and strategic partnerships, gets a direct financial return and can influence investment choices. Since energy underpins many of the basic human rights, there is a strong argument for ownership in the energy sector to be in a form that benefits citizens the most.

In our study “The Role of Ownership in a Just Energy Transition” we investigated the different existing concepts of ownership in South Africa, what alternative ownership models could work in the country and how they could play an important role in facilitating a just energy transition. The results of the study were presented at a roundtable discussion that brought together stakeholders from CSOs, government, labour and industry. We identified opposing viewpoints but also common ground and areas of future cooperation.

More information and the study can be found on our website:

Playing With Solar

Moving from strength to strength, Playing with Solar over the past three years has gained immense support from enthusiastic volunteers who share our vision: to inspire young people to learn more about solar energy through a creative hands-on experience. For this year’s instalment of Playing with Solar, we worked with two teams of volunteers. Engineers Without Borders at the University of Cape Town who taught basic electronics and soldering skills, and Annie and Juni, inspirational and enthusiastic renewable energy students from Norway. At the end of the eight week project, each participant became proud solar advocates and put together their own solar powerbank.

YOUTH The YouLead Initiative

As the year 2030 draws closer, we felt a new strategy was needed to engage youth who will be the young leaders of the next decade. After 10 years we decided to close our Leadership Clubs that we had rolled out in 25 different schools in Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal and employ our valuable knowledge and experience in a new youth project: the YouLead Initiative. Taking all the successful components of the clubs model, the new initiative is aimed at young people in Khayelitsha and is intended to create new opportunities and experiences, networks and pathways that will equip them to become tomorrow’s Leaders. Since March 2018 the Youth Leadership team has been working with promising youths that have taken part in our training and activities. To find out more information about the YouLead Initiative, visit the Youth Leadership tab on our website - www.90by2030.org.za

Our Leadership Clubs Programme was a great success and learning curve for Project 90. It was a privilege to play a part in the pupil’s journey towards becoming climate leaders and it is our hope that they continue to grow and be involved in the climate movement.

COMMUNITY

We completed the European Union Energy SMART Citizens in Action Project with the final documents being shared with the same communities who had participated in the development of the Training Manual and the Energy Governance Report. The launches of the resources were held in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, to share the results of the project with community leaders, stakeholders and local municipalities. The Project 90 website has all the resources available for download, including the documentary that was compiled with the Cape Town participants.

To build on the SMART Citizens in Action Project from the beginning of 2018 the Community Partnership Programme has continued working with community leaders in Cape Town and Ekurhuleni to improve their capacity to participate in decision making processes on energy.

The programme specifically looks at engaging with local government, understanding democracy and social auditing and building personal leadership and effective campaigns. The first workshops were conducted in the two provinces and the engagement will continue for another two years with the same community leaders.

Thando Lukuko has also been working with the African Climate Reality Project by facilitating workshops on sustainability and budget monitoring. This programme offers additional opportunities for the participants of Smart Citizens in Action.
