CROPS
INTRODUCTION:
In view of increasing costs of
labour and inputs, farming has become lessremunerative. Today, farmer is in search of newalternative, especially when several incentivesunder Horticulture Mission and export promotionare provided by the Government. Horticulturecrops yield much higher than ordinary field crops andare certainly far more remunerative. It is a healthysign that farmers are now keep to plant more
areas under orchards. Healthy and good qualityplant material is the foundation of successful fruit&flower industry in the country.Nursery is a place where plants are cultivated andgrown to usable size. The nursery management has

gained a status of commercial venture. Raisingnursery from seeds and other planting materials iseasy and convenient way for ensuring bettergermination and root development. The planting
material of horticultural crops is multiplied undernursery conditions with proper care andmanagement for raising healthy, vigorous anddisease free seedlings.
SCOPE FOR NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT
The targets of
the enhancing fruit production in the coming yearswill be achieved only through production anddistribution of healthy, genuine and highquality planting material ofcommercial/improved varieties of fruit crops insufficient quantities. The maintenance of purity iseasy in vegetative propagated fruit crops ascompared to seed propagated ones, still it requires
a close monitoring at different stages in thenursery to avoid mixing with other varieties.Similarly, adequate measures are taken in thepreparation of plant material to produce diseaseand pest free plant material.
As there are few nurseries in our area & more
demand for healthy seedlings we decided to take upNURSERY MANAGEMENT OF HORTICULTURALCROPS .

Raising rootstocks in polyethylene bags isrecommended as this give better establishmentof plants in the field on account of undisturbedtap root system. Moreover, nursery raising inpolyethylene bags saves labour in weeding, watering, shifting and lifting of plants. The chiefadvantage of using polyethylene bags is that, theseedlings can be raised almost round the year undercontrolled conditions.
