Level of explosion protection
IP means: Ingress Protection. It means mechanical protection and protection again ingress of water, dust etc. Reference code is IEC 60529 "Degree of Protection provided by enclosures". Typically a certain IP level is specified for outdoor equipment and another one for indoor equipment.
