2. INTRODUCTION
ARGUMENT
What is the significance of this project for us and for the environment?
This project has helped us become aware of our own behaviour in the natural environment, it
has helped us develop right habits for hikes and wanderings in protected areas. It is necessary for us
to change the mentalities of both the adults and the children, leading them towards understanding,
implication, and the will to know and support the recovery of the environment… under the motto
“Red or Green for Hiking!”
The green colour of the “streetlight” – free for hikings, depends on our attempts and
successes. This project has opened our eyes and countless opportunities towards a life truly based on
ecological principles.
Why have we chosen this project?
Certainly there is a multitude of possibilities from which we can choose in order to bring our
small contribution to the solving of the environmental problems. The first aspect in approaching this
matter has been the curiosity to know our co-workers’ options about “Red or Green for hiking”. The
second aspect has been our will to have only “green light” in our further wanderings through life.

3. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT
To involve both the students and the teachers from the school into eco-tourism activities, such
as leisure, hikes in protected areas, and voluntary work, for a better understanding and protection of
the environment.
GENERAL TARGET
To identify the participating students and teachers’ opinions regarding hiking, as well as to
implement a series of solutions with a minimal impact on the environment among both the school and
the local communities.
SPECIFIC TARGETS (SMART TARGETS)
Questioning the students about their own behaviour when they are out in nature.
The assimilation of certain knowledge about tourism and the environment which represents the
base for the students’ ecological and civics education.
Promoting tourism as a means of preserving the biodiversity and as a way of getting involved
in environmental-protecting activities.
SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT
The present project aims to be a useful tool for the students, and not only, regarding the
experiences provided by eco-tourism.
The “Red or Green for Hiking” has offered us the possibility to understand and learn the
“eco-tourism” concept.
Throughout the project, multiple activities have been carried out (the application and
interpretation of questionnaires, the presentation of themes related to eco-tourism, protected areas,
and first aid during the consiliation classes, and also voluntary work activities, hikes, and
dissemination and evaluation activities), occasions for the participants (students, teachers, and
parents) to learn the meaning of eco-tourism, and how to combine the leisure activities with the
voluntary work and environmental-protective activities.
Eco-tourism provides the possibility of a direct contact with nature – the protection of the
environment represents a subject of world interest. The massive urbanization has also led to a
harmful effect on the environment due to the fact that people are not aware of the impact which their
non-ecological activities have on the environment.
The education through eco-tourism is extremely beneficial for changing the students’ atitude
and behaviour towards the environment.
The education through eco-tourism represents an important source of learning experiences – a
relaxing environment, free of the constraints imposed by a classroom. This type of education can
provide the students countless challenges, thus the education process becomes powerful and
inspirational, able to change behaviours and to create a strong relationship among class-mates, based
on mutual help.
The hikes and the voluntary work lead to the development of team work skills, to the
establishing of strong student-student and student-teacher relationships, resulting in the development
of positive habits for protecting and preserving the biodiversity. Moreover, the education through eco-
tourism offers physical, emotional, and mental benefits which provide a state of wellfare to society.
THE STUDY WHICH PRECEDES OUR ACTIVITIES
Through this study we wanted to learn which was the behaviour of a target group of students
from our school when they were hiking or when they were planning a hike.

6. CONCLUSIONS 1. The implementation of the programs providing information on the importance of eco-tourism in
schools is absolutely necessary in order to preserve intact the flora and fauna of a zone with high
touristic potential.
2. Through practical activities (hiking and volunteering), students develop the connection to nature,
reaching to appreciate its true value.
3. The knowledge gained out of the theoretical activities became much more thorough due to the
activities carried out in the wild.
4. Respecting the environment, we respect ourselves.
