IV. Vocabulary

Water cycle: condensation, evaporation, precipitation, rivers, lakes, runoff, clouds, cirrus, stratus, cumulus, fog, dew, rain, snow, hail, sleet, rainbow, sun, frost,

Seasons: summer, fall, autumn, winter, spring, temperature, predict, climate

Tools : meteorologist, predict, measure, thermometer, wind vane, barometer,

Storms : hurricane, tornado, thunder storm, blizzard, forecast, air pressure, humidity, wind, fronts, atmosphere, wind chill, vapor, molecules, lightening, thunder

V. Concepts/ California State Standards

First Grade

Earth Sciences

3. Weather can be observed, measured, and described. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know how to use simple tools (e. g., thermometer, wind vane) to measure weather conditions and record changes from day to day and across the seasons.

Page 2: Project GLAD  · Web viewSome fruits and vegetables are ready to eat in the spring. Some vegetables are: avocados, broccoli, cucumbers, and spinach. Some fruits that we eat in the

b. Students know that the weather changes from day to day but that trends in temperature or of rain (or snow) tend to be predictable during a season.

c. Students know the sun warms the land, air, and water.

Physical Sciences

1. Materials come in different forms (states), including solids, liquids, and gases. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know solids, liquids, and gases have different properties.

b. Students know the properties of substances can change when the substances are mixed, cooled, or heated.

Investigation and Experimentation

4. Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations. Students will:

a. Draw pictures that portray some features of the thing being described.b. Record observations and data with pictures, numbers, or written statements.c. Record observations on a bar graph.d. Describe the relative position of objects by using two references (e. g., above and next to, below and left of). e. Make new observations when discrepancies exist between two descriptions of the same object or phenomenon.

Big BookWeather

Repeated Phrase:

Winter, spring, summer, fall… Weather changes around us all!

Weather consists of temperature, air pressure, and precipitation.

It may be hot or cold outside, it may be sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy or windy. The weather changes what people do for fun.

Temperature is measured with a thermometer. It tells us how hot or cold something is.

The air temperature changes depending on the time and season. It is warmer during the day and colder at night. It is warmer in the summer and colder in the winter.

Air pressure creates wind. We tell the direction of the wind by using a wind vane.

Sometimes wind can be strong. Wind turns windmills to make electricity. The strong winds of a tornado can break up a building.

Clouds are made up of many tiny drops of water. The drops join and get heavier. When the drops get too heavy, they fall as precipitation.

Precipitation is measured with a rain gauge. There are many kinds of precipitation: rain, snow, hail, and sleet.

Drip! Drip! Drip! Luis listened to the sound of the rain hitting his umbrella as he walked home from school. He hummed the song Mrs. Alvarado had taught them. “Evaporation, condensation, precipitation on my mind, and it’s just the water cycle, and it happens all the time.”

“Mom, is it winter right now?”, Luis asked his mom, who was walking beside him holding her umbrella with one hand and baby Rebekah with the other.

“Yes, February is part of winter”, she answered.“Then why isn’t there any snow? Whenever we see pictures of people in

winter, they have snow”, Luis wondered. “When is it going to snow?”

Laughing, mom said, “It’s not likely to snow here. Whittier just isn’t cold enough. You’ll have to be content with the rain we get every once in awhile.”

Luis stomped in the middle of a puddle and watched the water splash up and around his feet.

“Don’t step in the puddles Luis, you’ll get all wet”, his mom warned.

Once at home, mom said, “Luis, get the mail out of the mailbox please, I’ll go open the door.” Standing on tip toe, Luis peered into the box. There were a few advertisements, and one letter. He carefully took them out and held them under the umbrella so they wouldn’t get wet.

“Look mom, we got a letter! Who is it from?” , Luis asked.“It’s from Uncle Oscar and Aunt Maribel. Let’s read what they wrote to

us.”, said Mom.

Fall (Autumn)

Fall is the season after summer. It is the time of year when the weather starts to get cold again in some places. In other places, it is still hot during the day and cold at night.

Weather

People wear warmer clothes. They may wear long pants and need a sweater in the morning. Then, when it gets hot in the afternoon, take the sweater off.

Clothing

Plants start to dry up. Farmers harvest their crops. They cut the food and bring it to sell. The leaves on some trees turn to yellow, orange, and brown. They dry up and fall off the tree.

Some fruits and vegetables are ready to eat in the fall. Some vegetables are: lettuce, mushrooms, spinach, and pumpkins. Some fruits that we eat in the fall are: pears, cranberries and apples. People like to eat pumpkin pie and drink apple cider.

Food

Children start another year of school in the fall. They like to play outside in the afternoon. Some of them play on soccer teams.

Recreation

Many children like to wear costumes go trick-or treating in the fall when it is Halloween.

Spring

Spring is the season after winter. It is the time of year when the weather is getting warmer. In some places there is a lot of rain. It is cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon.

Weather

People can stop wearing jackets, hats, and mittens because the weather is getting warmer. They still need to wear long pants, sweaters, and shoes because it is cold in the morning.

Clothing

Plants grow well in the spring. Farmers plant their crops. New grass and other plants start growing. The trees that lost their leaves in the fall, grow new leaves and little flowers called blossoms. The blossoms smell good.

Food

Children are still in school in the spring. In the afternoons they play outside games or stay inside to play. Some people play on baseball teams. Students have one week off at Easter time, so some families go on vacation.

Recreation

Some animals give birth at any time of year, but spring is the season when most animals start new families. Soon the female birds will lay their eggs from which young birds will later hatch. Rabbits give birth and nurse their babies in nests. Baby squirrels peek out from their tree houses. New born, spotted calves drink their mother's milk.

Dear Samuel, Leticia, Luis, and Rebekah,

We hope that you are doing well. It has been so long since we got to come

see you at Thanksgiving, we would like to invite you to come and visit us this

time. Here in the mountains, it has been snowing for a few days. It looks like

there is a white blanket on top of everything. It is so beautiful! Would you like

to come this weekend and play in the snow? Please call and let us know.

Sincerely,

Aunt Maribel

“Can we go mom? I’ve never seen snow except on T.V. Pleeeease!” , Luis begged.

“We’ll asked your dad when he gets home.” , said mom.“Whoopee, we’re going to see snow, we’re going to see snow!” Luis

jumped around in excitement.

On Saturday morning, Luis jumped out of the car at Uncle Oscar’s house. He gazed around at all the white snow, glistening in the sun. Inside, everyone put on special clothes to protect them from the cold and wet snow. Long pants, warm socks, two sweaters, a thick coat, a stocking cap, a scarf, and mittens. “I’m ready!” shouted Luis.

Everyone laughed and played. First, they had a snowball fight. One hit Luis right on his hat. “I’ll get you back!” he yelled. The mittens helped keep his hands from freezing as he made snowballs. The snow felt cold and powdery, it had to be pushed together a lot to form each ball.

Then they slid down the hill over and over again on a red sled and a black inner tube. The cold wind blew against his face as Luis and his dad speeded

down the hill slipping and sliding in all directions, and finally fell off the inner tube at the bottom of the hill. “Again, again!” Luis screamed in delight.

Before going back inside, they all made a snowman out of three big snowballs. They rolled each ball in the snow until more and more snow stuck to it. Aunt Maribel put two rocks for eyes and a pine cone for the nose. Uncle Oscar stuck two sticks in the sides for arms. Dad made a mouth out of more little rocks. Luis put his scarf around it’s neck and his hat on it’s head. “Goodbye, snowman, I hope you last a long time all the way until spring.”

After changing out of their cold wet clothes, everyone sat in the living room by the fireplace and drank hot chocolate.

“I love the snow!” said Luis. “Can we come back another time?”“Sure.”, said Uncle Oscar, “ and when we get feeling too cold, we will

come and visit you and go to the park to play since it is sunny and hot where you live. Winter sure is different all over.”
