▪ Karnataka, a state that houses varied climatic zones
ranging from arid, to temperate to tropical is a leader
in agricultural production.
▪ A leader in Coffee, Areca nut, Coconut and Cashew
production in addition to other crops, Karnataka state
has been topping the charts in agricultural production.
▪ However, the other side of the story involves rapidly
falling groundwater levels, water reservoirs drying up
due to inadequate rainfall, shrinking sources of
income from livestock and minor forest produce and
migration from villages to cities leading to a shrinkage
of agricultural workforce.
▪ The climatic woes of farmers of Karnataka were a
major source of inspiration for SankalpTaru
Foundation to launch Project Hasiru Sankalpa.

PROJECT HASIRU SANKALPA 2019-2020 | 01
▪ Project Hasiru Sankalpa was initiated in the year 2017 in
Chikmagalur district in Karnataka with a mission to
empower and strengthen rural livelihoods, while also
resolving water woes in the region.
▪ Through generous Green Patrons like you, SankalpTaru
Foundation has successfully planted thousands of fruits
bearing saplings in the districts of Chikmagalur,
Anantapur, Kolar, Koppal, Shivamoga, Haveri,
Chitradurga, Tumkur and Raichur .
▪ Fruit bearing saplings of Arecanut, Coconut, Mango,
Guava, Orange, Lemon and Jamun have been planted
on the lands of marginal farmers.
▪ Each farm has been fitted with micro drip irrigation and
capacities of the farmers have been built to maximize
production with minimal harm to natural resources.
The BeginningPROJECT HASIRU SANKALPA 2019-2020 | 02
▪ Karnataka witnessed monsoon failures in 2018
and a rampant flood in 2019. Such erratic
weather patterns and rainfall have added to the
existing problems of the farmers.
▪ While one part of the state reels under drought,
the other part struggles with floods. Loss of
arable land and fertility of the soil is a common
factor between the two and inevitably adds to
farmer debt.
▪ The farmer in Karnataka also faces the rising
cost of living, shrinking farmlands due to
commercialization and loss of additional income.
The ChallengesPROJECT HASIRU SANKALPA 2019-2020 | 03
▪ The project has come a long way since its launch because of
the trees you donated.
▪ A total of 7470 trees of Arecanut, Coconut, Mango, Guava and
other fruit bearing trees have been planted till date and the
farmer beneficiaries have seen an increase in their income.
▪ In addition to the plantation, SankalpTaru Foundation has also
helped in setting up cottage industries on farmer lands to
produce ‘Eco-Cutlery’ made from the barks of Areca Nut
tree. The bark is processed and shaped into biodegradable
plates, bowls and spoons through simple machines. The
innovation has led to farmers earning an additional income of
Rs. 12,000 p.a. from 1 acre land.
▪ The micro irrigation drip system has also saved tons of
water, improved fertility and increased production of the trees.

Testimonial From The GroundLet's read what one of Hasiru Sankalpa's most
hardworking beneficiary from Koppal District has to say
about SankalpTaru Foundation.
"SankalpTaru Foundation had planted 500 trees of
Areca nut on my land in 2017. Even though the
average production of Areca nut from Areca nut
Tree starts at 5 years, my efforts and the high
quality of sapling has allowed me to produce fruits
from the trees at 3 years itself. I am
already reaping benefits from my plantation. The
foundation planted Areca nut trees on my farm
again in 2019 and I hope to care for the new plants
just like my previous ones. I am very thankful to
SankalpTaru Foundation for expanding my
sources of income.”

▪ With your continued support and trust, the Foundation aims to increase the number of farmers under
the ambit of Project Hasiru Sankalpa and show them a sustainable way of earning their livelihood.
▪ The plantations carried out by SankalpTaru Foundation have been a source of inspiration for farmers in
nearby districts of Chikmagalur and the foundation has received requests to expand operations
aggressively in the state.
▪ Your uninterrupted support can reverse loss of livelihoods of farmers in Karnataka due to uncertain
weather patterns and increase biodiversity in the Western Ghats through a mix of fruit and native
species.
