Other Requirements to Show at theFair, Pre-Fair & Speed Show

The "Education & Service Form" will NOT be required this year. Participation ineducational clinics is still encouraged, but not required.

Each youth exhibitor will be required to pass a "Horse Safety Test" with each horse theyintend to use in any of the 3 Fair shows. If a youth will only be using a horse for halterclasses, then they will only need to pass the Basic Handling portion of the test. Once ahorse/rider combination has passed the test, that combination does not need to repeatthe test in future years. See the schedule at the end of this packet for the numerousopportunities to learn about and test on safe handling and riding.

The "Horse Safety Test" will consist of watching you groom and tack up your horse tostart. We are looking to make sure that you are safe while handling your horse – such asnot walking between your horse and the trailer when your horse is tied up and makingsure your horse knows you’re behind it. We want to make sure that your horse tack is safeand your horse is saddled and bridled properly.

For riding, we want to make sure that the rider is in control of the horse at the walk, trotand lope and that the rider is easily able to stop their horse.  We want to make sure thatthe rider is in control of their horse to protect them and other riders. For driving we wantto make sure the driver is in control and the harness is fitted properly.

An exhibitor may repeat the test as many times as necessary to demonstrate safehandling and riding practices. Safety is the goal! A copy of the "Horse Safety Test" is onpage 7-8 of this packet.

New for 2020: Horse Safety Test

The 4-H Horse Committee, with review and approval by the County Fair Board, has madeimportant changes to qualifications to participate in the 2020 Green County Pre-Fair HorseShow (June 27), County Fair Horse Show (July 11) and Speed Show (July 12 - now on Sunday!)

The goal of the change is to put greater emphasis on safe riding and handling practices, while decreasing the burden of outgoing requirements, once a safe threshold is met. Thesechanges will be fully explained at the 4-H Horse Project Kick-off, Sunday, February 2nd @1pm at the Justice Center.
