Project Management Mistakes to Avoid
Project management plays an important role in running a successful business. However, there are
specific project management mistakes you should avoid to remain a viable and profitable
business. Let’s take a look at what some of those mistakes are.
1. Lacking the Right Skills and Resources
It is critical to ensure you have the right staffing for your project, yet incorrectly allocating
resources is one of the most common mistakes made with project management. If you don’t have
the right people on your project, it can ruin your project. You can maximize your planning, but
without the right skills and resources, it won’t matter.
Solution:
As a project manager, you need to visibly track your employees’ skills and experience. Have
your employees do skill assessment testing so you know the skill level of all your staff and you
can properly assign them.
2. Lack of Project Manager Experience
A project can quickly become out of control without an experienced project manager behind the
project.
Solution:
Hire a project manager that has the right certifications, and/or experience to properly manage the
project at hand. Project managers have areas of expertise so match accordingly.

3. Too Much Micromanaging
One of the most common mistakes made by project managers is the inability to let go of the
wheel and leave those you’ve assigned project tasks to, to carry out those assignments. Stop
standing over their shoulder, stop texting or emailing them constantly, and let them do what they
are getting paid to do.
Solution:
Match employees to tasks based on skills and experience and then tell them if they need your
input or help you’ll be in your office. Delegate and get busy with your workload.
4. Improper Tracking of Projects
When projects are not tracked in the detail they need to be tracked, projects go over budget,
deadlines aren’t met, and there’s a lot of unhappy people and a lot of stress.
Solution:
Invest in project management software that can track all aspects of your project seamlessly.
Never again will you be in the dark or out of the loop.
5. Failing to Keep Multiple Projects Properly Organized
Project managers who are in charge of multiple projects often do not keep their projects
organized, and therefore, they never have an accurate picture of the status of your projects, which
can lead to a conflict in the use of resources, an inability to meet deadlines, and a loss in profits.

Solution:
Use project management software to track all of your projects. Know the state of each project at
any given time, and what each employee is doing. This way you can keep your projects moving
forward at all times.
These five common project management mistakes should be avoided. Use the solutions that have
been presented to keep your project management on focus and on budget. Project management is
key to the success of many businesses, yet it’s often misunderstood, and underutilized. The more
you learn about the importance of project management the more likely you are to use it to its full
capacity.
