PROJECT ON THE MIDDLE AGES6TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES

WE HAVE A PROJECT???

• Yes! Starting today, you all have an AT HOME project to

complete on the Middle Ages

• Before you freak out, you have several options to choose

from.

• You get to pick which one best suits YOUR learning needs.

• You also get to be creative and have fun.

• Please pay close attention to the following slides and look

closely at examples from years past.

OPTION 1: CONSTRUCT A MEDIEVAL CASTLE• During medieval Europe castles were important for people’s safety and protection. There were people who ran the castles

and people who worked in the castles. Everyone’s daily lives depended on everyone else doing their jobs & part.

• -Research what castles looked like, what parts they had, and what the parts were used for.

• -Build a sturdy castle with at least 10 parts labeled.

• -You must also write an explanation (that is at least 3 sentences for each feature) as to why you would have needed EACH of the 10

features you chose for your castle.

• -Your explanation and cited sources must be turned in with your castle. This means tell what websites you used to find information.

• MATERIALS

• -Use cardboard, construction paper, string, paper towel tubes, Styrofoam, wood,

etc. to make your castle. DO NOT use food or Legos or any kind of building “kit”.

• SIZE

• Base should be no larger than 12”x12”

CASTLE EXAMPLES: This one

actually had

a light!

EXAMPLE EXPLANATION THAT IS INCORRECT(DOES NOT INCLUDE 3 SENTENCES PER FEATURE…)

This project did not include the 3 sentence

paragraph description with any of the labeled

parts of the castle.

EXAMPLE EXPLANATION THAT IS CORRECT (IT DOES HAVE 3 SENTENCES FOR EACH FEATURE AND TELLS ALL 10 FEATURES)

Remember to

explain all 10

features (using

3 sentences

each) AND tell

what sources

or websites

you used!

OPTION 2: CREATE YOUR OWN MEDIEVAL SHIELD• During medieval Europe, a knight’s shield was unique. It was used as a form of identification as well as

protection. The colors on a shield (heraldry) had meaning to the owner of the shield.

• Research the colors and pictures on medieval shields and create your own that is unique to you!

• Create a neat, STURDY shield with 2-3 colors and at least 3 symbols or pictures that are unique to you.

*These can NOT be printed from the internet. You need to draw or cut/create them yourself.

• In 2-3 paragraphs, you must explain WHAT your colors and symbols (or pictures) represent and HOW they

represent you. –Your explanation along with your sources MUST be glued to the back of your shield.

• If you choose the Shield, see Mrs. Evans for a copy of the meanings of the colors and symbols.

• MATERIALS

• -You can make your shield out of Styrofoam, very sturdy cardboard (it shouldn’t be floppy),

or wood, etc.

• SIZE

• Should be no larger than 12”x12”

SHIELD EXAMPLES:

Included Sources (or websites used) on

the back!!!

EXAMPLE EXPLANATION THAT IS INCORRECT(NOT LONG ENOUGH OR DOES NOT EXPLAIN HOW THESE COLORS AND SYMBOLS REPRESENT YOU!)

The example below is incorrect because

the person is not describing themselves.

They are pretending to be a night that

lived during that time period. Do not

do that!

The example above is incorrect because it is not

2-3 paragraphs. It is also not in complete

sentences and is difficult to read. The person did

NOT describe why the colors and symbols

represent THEM.

EXAMPLE EXPLANATION THAT IS CORRECT(2-3 PARAGRAPHS AND EXPLAINS HOW THE COLORS AND SYMBOLS REPRESENT THE PERSON)

EXAMPLE EXPLANATION THAT IS CORRECT(2-3 PARAGRAPHS AND EXPLAINS HOW THE COLORS AND SYMBOLS REPRESENT THE PERSON)

OPTION 3: COMPILE A 3 SIDED DISPLAY BOARD (TRI-FOLD BOARD OR POSTER)

• The Middle Ages was a very interesting and difficult time period. Choose any Medieval

topic that interests you, to research more in depth and compile the things you learned on

a tri-fold poster. You can get these boards at Walmart, CVS, The Dollar Store, Target, etc.

• There are a list of possible topics to choose from, but you may come up with a topic of

your own if it is not on the list…Get it approved by teacher before beginning project.

• -Your display board may have hand-drawn or have internet images. Cite your sources.

• -You must also have hand- written information (NOT TYPED) on your display board. Cite

your sources,

• -You will be required to fill out a “Research Worksheet” provided by

your teacher on your topic and attach it to your board.

POSSIBLE TOPICS:

• Medieval Weapons

• A Specific Pope or King

• Medieval Fashion

• The Black Death (Plague)

• The Feudal System

• Medieval Medicine/Science

• Charlemagne

• Medieval Music &Art

• Religion and Cathedrals

• Joan of Arc

• Knighthood

• The Crusades

• Viking Invasions (from Scandinavia)

EXAMPLE TRI FOLD BOARD THAT IS INCORRECT.(*THIS IS NOT ON MEDIEVAL TIMES)

THIS IS NOT CORRECT BECAUSE THEY JUST PRINTED A BUNCH OF INFO AND PICTURES OUT AND GLUED TO A BOARD. ALSO, THE RESEARCH INFORMATION

PAGE WAS NOT INCLUDED.

EXAMPLE TRI-FOLD BOARD THAT IS CORRECT(HAS HAND WRITTEN INFO, PICTURES DRAWN OR PRINTED AND HAS THE RESEARCH WORKSHEET ATTACHED AND SOURCES!)

Included the research

worksheet that is

required!

Included the websites

Or sources used!

MORE TRI FOLD EXAMPLES…

OPTION 4: DESIGN A DIGITAL PRESENTATION• The Middle Ages was a very interesting and difficult time period. Choose any Medieval topic that

interests you, to research more in depth and compile the things you learned in a digital

presentation of some sort.

• Some possibilities are PowerPoint, Glogster, Prezi, or another program if

you get it approved by your teacher.

• -Your digital presentation will need to summarize the topic by answering, Who? What? When?

Where? Why? How? questions AND give deeper or additional information on the topic

• -You can make it more engaging by including many pictures and/or

video clips

• -Include a slide or section at the end of presentation that cites all

sources (tells which websites you used for your information and pictures)

POSSIBLE TOPICS:

• Medieval Weapons

• A Specific Pope or King

• Medieval Fashion

• The Black Death (Plague)

• The Feudal System

• Medieval Medicine/Science

• Charlemagne

• Medieval Music &Art

• Religion and Cathedrals

• Joan of Arc

• Knighthood

• The Crusades

• Viking Invasions (from Scandinavia)

EXAMPLE PRESENTATIONS THAT ARE CORRECT(WOULD INCLUDE: A SLIDE CITING SOURCES, CLEAR FOCUS ON TOPIC, ANSWERS ALL QUESTIONS BELOW, HAS MANY PICTURES AND GRAPHICS)

• focused on a topic related to the Middle Ages or Medieval Europe.

• Summarizes the topic by answering Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

questions AND provides deeper understanding and additional information

on the topic (using the Research Worksheet as a guide)

• presentation includes many pictures and/or use of video clips

• Proofread for grammatical/spelling mistakes!

• ALL Sources MUST BE CITED on last slide!

WHERE DO I START?

1. Tonight you will take home this green rubric and read over all the options with your parent or guardian.

Decide TOGETHER which project you think would be the best for you to complete.

2. After you have decided, fill out the yellow half sheet of paper

• You fill in the due date: May 12th

• You fill in the project you choose: Castle, Shield, Tri-Fold Board, or Digital presentation

• You sign

• Parent signs

3. Return the YELLOW slip to me and keep the GREEN rubric at home. You will need this to know what is

required for your project. You have over a month to complete.

4. Try your best and have fun!

BUT, WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE THE INTERNET OR A COMPUTER???

• If you do not have internet access, please let your teacher know. If you choose a castle or

shield, we have packets printed out to give you that show you the different parts of a castle

and explain their purpose as well as packets to explain the shield

• Tri Fold boards and Power Point research can be completed using books checked out from

the library. We can print pictures for you if needed and you can also draw pictures from

your books onto the board.

• The most difficult project to do without a computer would be a power point, so I would

recommend choosing one of the other 3 options. We do not have class time to give you to

use the computer.
