Introduction❖ India’s tenth-largest state, Tamil Nadu, has around 63

Lakhs Hectare land for plantation. Around 70% of people

depend on agriculture as a mean of their livelihood. ❖ With the highest production of bananas, second highest

production of mangoes, and third highest production of

coffee and chikoo, fruit-bearing trees are a huge source of

income for the farmers of the state.

❖ By growing fruit-bearing trees alongside crops, the farmers

in the state are boosting their income while saving the

environment. Inter-cropping has been hailed as one of the

top solutions to mitigate the risks of crop failure in the state.Project Pasumai Tamil Nadu

❖ Project Pasumai Tamil Nadu was launched in 2019 by SankalpTaru Foundation in Coimbatore, Kanchipuram,

and Trichy districts of Tamil Nadu where fruit-bearing

saplings were planted to better the livelihoods of the

marginal farmers and mitigate the risks of crop failure due

to uncertain weather patterns.

The state grows a variety of fruits and accounts for 10% production of fruits in India. Your generous contributions under the project helped the foundation (emitted could) plant trees of Coconut, Guava, Lemon, Mango, Pomegranate, and Chikoo, on the farmers’ lands.

The Beginning

❖ 45% of Tamil Nadu’s agricultural economy is highly dependent on monsoons, which poses a challenge for the team to convince the farmers for the plantation of fruit-bearing saplings.

❖ Marginal farmers from the state with small land holdings find it difficult to allocate a portion of their land for plantation activities.

❖ Uncertain rainfall patterns, mostly decreasing rains give the SankalpTaru Foundation team and their farmers a tough time in plantations as well as maintaining the survival of the planted saplings.

❖ The team must analyze a monthly, even a quarterly weather forecast to plan the pre-plantation, plantation, and post- plantation activities.

❖ The operational team receives queries from the farmers who are apprehensive about the success rate of the plantations. To support them and prepare them for work, the team gives technical inputs and conducts various workshops with them during the land survey and the beneficiary identification phase.

The Challenges

The StoryToday❖ The project has come a long way since its launch because

of the trees you donated.

❖ A total of 2500 trees have been planted since 2019 and

the farmer beneficiaries have seen an increase in their

income. There has also been an increase in the green

patches in the state.

❖ The Foundation’s vision and the farmers’ confidence in us

to follow inter-cropping is shielding them from the risks of

weather uncertainty and boosting their livelihoods. Seeing

the success of many early mover farmers, new farmers are

now showing an interest to be a part of the program.

* The above data has been given for 2500 trees planted under Rural Livelihood Support Program in Tamil Nadu for 20 years. * After 3 years, the average fruit produced from one tree in one season is taken to be 29 kgs. * The average cost of fruits is taken to be 60 INR.

Mottiya Gounder, one of the farmer-beneficiaries of SankalpTaru Foundation from Project Pasumai, Tamil Nadu, has a heartwarming message regarding the help he received in which our team carried out plantations of 835 Guava saplings in 2019.

He says, most of the people in my village do not earn enough money from their crops, so they take loans from the local moneylenders to buy seeds, fertilizers and manure to get a good harvest. If the harvest is not optimal or crop failure occurs, the farmer is not able to get enough money to repay the debt. So, the farmer is forced to take another personal loan to grow more crops, and sell them to pay back the previous loans. This creates a vicious cycle in which many marginal farmers like me get captured. But I am thankful to SankalpTaru for their mission to help farmers in my village Erumaipatti Ponneri under Project Pasumai, Tamil Nadu that came in the nick of time to build an income to sustain our families through plantation of fruit bearing trees. They have prevented us from getting driven into poverty which was not only affecting us economically but psychologically too. I will be forever grateful to them for changing our lives for the better.

❖ With your continued support and trust, we are sure

that this green journey won’t stop here. The

Foundation aims to progress the project by

increasing the number of beneficiaries and show

them a sustainable way of earning their livelihood.

❖ We have received requests from the farmers for

the extension of the project to their areas and to

help them become climate resilient. Certainly, it

would be a delight to watch your contributions

mitigating the risks of crop failures by planting fruit-

bearing trees on the lands of farmers.
