  • Development of this project has been a collaborative effort between the Ad Hoc Working Committee for WacKOS Project, Science Students’ Society (SCIENCESS) of Kulliyyah of Science, International Islamic

University Malaysia (IIUM), and Malaysia’s Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) 2007.

Science Students’ Society (SCIENCESS) is a faculty-

based student organization that connects students of

Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM by promoting and fostering

community interaction, as well as providing support for

students to engage in academic and non-academic

    endeavours.

Bayer Young Environmental Envoys (BYEE) is an

international network of young individuals passionate

about environment, selected through a programme

organized by Bayer in partnership with the United

    Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

This project has been selected as one of the 50 semi-finalists (Category: Institutes for Higher Learning) for Maxis Cyberlinq Competition 2007 and received a funding of RM1000 for its initial activities. The official website for this project can be accessed

    at: http://cqwackos.wordpress.com

  • Executive SummaryThe WacKOS Café and Resource Center is a student-led project intended for the intellectual

enrichment of the students of the Kulliyyah of Science. Its main aim is to provide leisure space,

as well as tools and resources that will enable students to participate in activities geared

towards academic excellence, personal growth and independence, which will encourage and

allow them to contribute positively to their immediate environment. For this, the planning and

implementation of the project has been divided into two parts (to run concurrently), which

includes 1) the Build-up and running of the WacKOS Café Kiosk, and 2) Furnishing the KOS

Resource Center with books and reading materials of various genres. Although funding and

running costs of the project shall initially be borne by the Kulliyyah of Science, the project will

generate its own supportive income by means of the cafe kiosk. Resources such as books,

magazines and other reading materials will be obtained through affiliations with organizations

and book clubs around Malaysia. Ultimately, the project also plans to fund and support its

cause through sponsorships by various companies and non governmental organizations

(NGOs), as well as through fundraising efforts.

  • Introduction

    About WacKOS Project

The WacKOS Resource Center is a project that aims to provide students of the Kulliyyah

of Science (KOS) with a positive environment as well as an effective platform for them to

engage in meaningful activities outside of class. Aside from activities, WacKOS is also proposed

as a student reference center for reading materials on various topics and genre, including

information and resources on KOS-related activities such as Industrial Training and the Final

Year Project, which are compulsory undertakings for all KOS students hoping to graduate.

The project title WacKOS is derived from the word wacky, which denotes a touch of

unconventionality and uniqueness that is well suited to the spirit of youth for whom this project

is tailored. In a sense, it is the project’s very aim to introduce KOS students to a side of them

that is less conservative and predictable: a side fed by creativity, individuality and self-reliance.

The ultimate objective of WacKOS therefore is to encourage students to break bounds and

trigger change by realizing their own personal potential.

In truth, catalyzing such changes is not difficult. Students by their youthful nature are

motivated towards change, and such motivation, if harnessed and guided in the right path may

prove to be an enormous asset not only to the collective student body per se, but to the

Kulliyyah at large. On the other hand, motivation alone cannot exact change. It is important that

students are furnished with various tools and informative resources that will enable them not

only to contribute, but to do so in a positive manner. In this light, the presence of a well

equipped youth activity center is essential to ensure that students are given every opportunity

to be all that they can be.

  • Project Overview

    Objectives

    The WacKOS Project aims to:

    i. Create a positive and constructive environment where KOS students can relax,

unwind and participate in activities outside of class.

ii. Enrich students’ intellect by supplying them with resources of various forms and

    genres.

iii. Furnish relevant information regarding KOS-related courses such as Industrial

    training and Final Year Project.

iv. Promote activities both within and outside of the Kulliyyah that are geared towards

students’ awareness, independence and personal growth.

Target ParticipantsFor the time being this project, its resources and proposed activities are dedicated to the

students currently studying at the Kulliyyah of Science, as it has been designed specifically to

aid KOS in the recovery and reconstruction of student capacity post its relocation to the

Kuantan Campus. Once the project has been established and well underway, considerations can

be made for WacKOS to reach out to other academic faculties within the Kuantan Campus and

include student participations from the Kulliyyah of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Allied

Health Sciences, though such attempts has not yet been discussed.

In terms of its contributors and sponsors, this project will garner initial support from the

Kulliyyah of Science. In addition to monetary funds, contributions in the form of books, journals

and magazines can be obtained through affiliations with organizations and companies

interested in supporting WacKOS (for further details. please refer to Project Resources).

  • Goals

The goals of the WacKOS Project include:

    i. Creating an independent and intellectually competent student body within the

    Kulliyyah of Science.

ii. Teaching and encouraging students to be self-reliant in making informed decisions

about their education and future endeavors.

iii. Inculcating students’ awareness and exposure to various activities and programs

geared towards personal growth and self actualization.

iv. Helping students to realize that they are an important agent of change and thus have

the capacity to become functional and contributing members of society.

  • Project Description

The WacKOS Project is designed to provide services and information which cater to

students’ social and intellectual development in a positive environment. Services and facilities

to be provided through the project are as follows:

    WacKOS Café

WacKOS Café is proposed to be set up at the administrative building of the Kulliyyah of

Science, IIUM Kuantan. The design covers a kiosk of approximately 3 x 4 meters, and will be

equipped with a complete countertop, sink, drink dispensers, refrigerator, freezer, tables and

chairs. Below are the basic floor plan design and artistic impressions of the WacKOS Café:

The project proposes to develop the currently empty resource centre situated at the

administrative building of the Kulliyyah of Science, next to the proposed WacKOS Café. At

present, the resource centre is equipped with tables, chairs, and book shelves. The WacKOS

Resource Centre is designed to incorporate three major areas: lounge area, quiet reading area,

    and public presentation area.

The WacKOS Resource Centre is also aimed to be a functional nucleus for students’

activities, where various programs can be continuously organized for students’ benefit. Various

activities may include screening of noteworthy films, live musical performances, and book

discussions. In addition to academic volumes such as journals and texts, the resource center will

also make available to students books and reading materials of various genres ranging from

light reading to current issues and events with which students may benefit, either academically

or in terms of their intellectual or personal growth. Following are the floor plan design and

  • Collaborations, Affiliations, and Sponsors

Due to its nature as a student-led project, WacKOS works best when aligned with other

like-minded persons organizations, and groups. These groups can work together to offer

resources and provide facilities for students’ activities, as well as to share advice and experience

    beneficial to all.

These groups can also provide support in terms of funding, grants, donations, learning

opportunities, publicity and mentorship, to name a few. At present, the following organizations

have been or are being sought for material and monetary support:

  • Currently, we are looking for more groups and organizations interested to affiliate with

the project. Contributing and participating organizations will enjoy various benefits including

tax exemptions. Their company logos will also be featured on all of the project’s advertisements

and publications, and will be special invitees to our programs and functions (Refer to Appendix

    I and II).

  • Next StepWacKOS is currently focused on garnering support from the students of KOS, as the

project is student-led. This is done by including students into the program through its team-

building and committee reinforcement efforts. The project is also in the process of promoting

itself to the faculty members of the Kulliyyah of Science, as well as to other potential

contributors outside of the university through requests for donations, sponsorship and funding.

In terms of the implementation of the WacKOS Café and Resource Center, a formal working

design is being drawn up for the kiosk and donation requests are being made for reading

materials from various book stores, one of which has confirmed its willingness to participate. It

is also important to note that the WacKOS project has been awarded initial funding for its

current involvement in the Maxis Cyberlinq 2007 Competition, of which the winning project will

    receive monetary sponsorship from Maxis.

Thus, it is sincerely hoped that the WacKOS Project can be taken into serious

consideration, since the presence of this café and resource center can play pivotal role in uniting

KOS students in their struggle to adapt to Kuantan life. More importantly, by affording them a

little bit of space, IIUM will have given KOS students what they need most in such a solitary

place: a second family, and a home away from home.
