What Is SEO?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines.

All major search engines such as Google Bing and Yahoo have primary search results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users

How do Search Engine Operate?

Search engines have two major functions: crawling and building an index, and providing search users with a ranked list of the websites they've determined are the most relevant.

Imagine the World Wide Web as a network of stops in a big city subway system.

Each stop is a unique document (usually a web page, but sometimes a PDF, JPG, or other file). The search engines need a way to “crawl” the entire city and find all the stops along the way, so they use the best path available—links.

1. Crawling and Indexing

Crawling and indexing the billions of documents, pages, files, news, videos, and media on the World Wide Web.

2. Providing Answers

Providing answers to user queries, most frequently through lists of relevant pages that they've retrieved and ranked for relevancy.

The link structure of the web serves to bind all of the pages together.

Links allow the search engines' automated robots, called "crawlers" or "spiders," to reach the many billions of interconnected documents on the web.

Once the engines find these pages, they decipher the code from them and store selected pieces in massive databases, to be recalled later when needed for a search query. To accomplish the monumental task of holding billions of pages that can be accessed in a fraction of a second, the search engine companies have constructed datacentres all over the world.

These monstrous storage facilities hold thousands of machines processing large quantities of information very quickly. When a person performs a search at any of the major engines, they demand results instantaneously; even a one- or two-second delay can cause dissatisfaction, so the engines work hard to provide answers as fast as possible.

Search engines are answer machines. When a person performs an online search, the search engine scours its corpus of billions of documents and does two things: first, it returns only those results that are relevant or useful to the searcher's query; second, it ranks those results according to the popularity of the websites serving the information. It is both relevance and popularity that the process of SEO is meant to influence.

How do search engines determine relevance and popularity?

To a search engine, relevance means more than finding a page with the right words. In the early days of the web, search engines didn’t go much further than this simplistic step, and search results were of limited value. Over the years, smart engineers have devised better ways to match results to searchers’ queries. Today, hundreds of factors influence relevance, and we’ll discuss the most important of these in this guide.

Search engines typically assume that the more popular a site, page, or document, the more valuable the information it contains must be. This assumption has proven fairly successful in terms of user satisfaction with search results.

Popularity and relevance aren’t determined manually. Instead, the engines employ mathematical equations (algorithms) to sort the wheat from the chaff (relevance), and then to rank the wheat in order of quality (popularity).

Developing an Effective SEO Strategy

4 | P a g e

1. Optimize for mobile search

In a recent study, Global Web Index took a sampling of 170,000 adults in 32 markets around the globe. The results show that 80 percent of adults now have a smartphone; the average time spent on a mobile device was 1.85 hours a day (over a half hour increase from 2012).

As mentioned in SEO PowerSuite’s recent guide to mobile-friendly sites, for Google, nearly 50 percent of all traffic is mobile. Your mobile site, now more than ever, needs to be equal in presence, content and search ability as your desktop site. Plus, having a mobile-friendly site boosts your ranking slightly from the get-go before diving deep into updates.

2. Focus on a variety of keywords

SEO has evolved over the years to consider more than just singular keywords. Take the yesteryear approach to applicable words and add in the users’ intent behind the search.  Ranking the appropriate keywords can be the deal breaker for top of search placement.

So, how do you know what verbiage will actually work? You likely have your mainstays but there may be powerful keyword phrases you are missing out on. Knowing the actual prospective data can help position keywords from the beginning while removing much of the guesswork.

Cue up a tool such as Rank Tracker and the feature “Suggest Keywords” to can cut down on hours of work by easily aggregating information from 17 keyword suggestion platforms. Because each keyword you choose requires a significant amount of effort – page updates, content creation, text anchoring – invest time and money in what matters.

3. Don’t ignore social media

Search your company on a variety of browsers in a variety of locations. Note if your active social media pages – Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter – come up. Maintaining and growing a social media presence can envelope the main page nicely in rank.

Optimally, your webpage would pull up first, but following should be social media channels emblazoned with up-to-date content and an engaged community. Then, if the user does not click to your webpage first, at least they are greeted with the essence of your brand; it is here they are invited into your brand which is a invaluable positioning technique

4. Long tail SEO still matters

5 | P a g e

Consider why people search for anything online. Who are your customers and what do they want with your product?

Say you are in the electrical business, searches for “POLYCABC C TV CABLESIZE3+1COPPER CUNDUCTOR UNARMOURD 90 MTR. COIL” may be a term lesser in overall search volume but greater in sales for your product if you can rank high through strategic SEO with this phrasing. At that point the client knows what they want (and are likely willing to pay for it).

You’ll still want to strive for the short golden keywords, such as “POLYCAB C TV CABLE,” but knowing how your customers interact with the product can increase sales volume with proper targeting.

Unique “long tail” searches comprise the majority of the world’s searches, so pay attention to what you can optimize on this end.

5. Pair up with PR

One tactic that has not shifted in the wide world of SEO is inbound links back to your site. This aids in creating the golden twins of referral traffic and increase SEO.

To acquire these priceless links from top quality sources you need to be bold. Actively pitch your products and services to journalists who write about your industry. Keep it simple and explain the value of why people need to know about your brand.

Run searches with adverbs such as “best of” and “top 10” to see if your competitors are listed. If you believe your business can offer true value to these journalists or their readers then formulate a pitch to try to get traffic back to your site.

Don’t just ask for links, earn them. Produce valuable content related to your industry with keywords used appropriately and tagged efficiently on your webpage to establish the brand as an expert in the field.

Traffic Generation and Strategies used

9 | P a g e

Traffic is the most important task if you are running a online business, without traffic you will not convert your leads into sales.

Note: - Don't expect that you will get millions of hits in couple of days, this process is slow but effective, and after some handwork you will definitely get good number of visitors on your website.

1. Optimize your site for search engines.

Search engine is the basic way from where you can drive a lot of traffic for free, always remember if you follow Google algorithm Panda, Penguin and hummingbird then your website can easily come into top 10 search results. You need to do your homework properly by optimising your website with proper keywords for targeted audience. Make your website responsive, the latest google update ranks your website higher if it is responsive.

2. Frequently update the contents of your site.

Always remember Content is the King in terms of driving traffic, if your website is not updated with new posts and new products then you will loose on your users and less users means less conversions and bad search ranking.

3. Take advantage of social networking sites.

Social media has evolved in the recent times and in some case it has beaten SEO, if you are popular on social networks like Facebook and twitter then you can easily drive tons of traffic on your website by sharing and tagging your content. To grow fans on your Facebook takes time but it is worth the handwork.

4. Get links with other sites in your niche.

Getting traffic to your website from some other website just because you have your site is linked is a great thing, you can generate tons of traffic by link building or we call it backlinks, you can even increase your search engine ranking by that.

5. Use any chance to promote your site for free.

You should never miss out on free promotion and it is always welcome so you should never neglect it, there are different ways to promote your website for free, and you can post free ads on classified websites, submission to directories and generate good traffic.

6. Create a free product or service.

People appreciate free things and if you develop something is free of cost and useful to users then you can't unlimited traffic if your product becomes famous, you can even use coupon codes to offer discount to users, it can also create impact.

7. Use offline promotion.

Offline promotion has been forgotten by most of the people but let me make it very clear that offline marketing can create a huge impact on your website. Some of the way to promote website offline are printing your link on your business card, your logo on vehicles, hoardings and leaflets all over the city, don't miss out radio and newspaper ads, it creates a huge impact.

Organic Seo

11 | P a g e

Organic search engine optimization (organic SEO) refers to the methods used to obtain a high placement (or ranking) on a search engine results page in unpaid, algorithm-driven results on a given search engine. Methods such as boosting keywords, back linking and writing high-quality content can all improve a site’s page rank. Black hat SEO methods, such as the use of keyword stuffing and link farming, can also boost organic SEO.

Sites using organic SEO in the truest sense will be much like organisms, meaning they will grow, expand and adapt over time in response to readers' desires.

Organic SEO can be achieved by:

Optimizing the Web page with relevant content

Spreading links pointing to the content

Incorporating meta tags and other types of tag attributes

Organic SEO methods mainly rely on the relevancy of the content they offer. Some of the benefits of organic SEO include:

Generates more clicks as the organically optimized sites offer relevant content related to the keywords searched

Again, due to the content relevancy, the search engine results will last longer.

Builds greater trust among the users

Very cost-effective when compared to paid listings

5 Ways to Use Paid Search & SEO Together

12 | P a g e

Paid search and SEO work in different ways to get visitors to your website. Paid search can yield almost immediate results, but can be expensive. Conversely, SEO is relatively cost free, but optimization efforts can take a long time to impact organic rankings. Both are important online marketing elements to, but can take different priorities depending on your goals and time.

In the past, these tactics have been managed separately, but now, more businesses are seeing the value of a unified approach. Back in 2011, Google shifted the industry in this direction when they started limiting organic search query information in an effort to increase privacy. With that change, it became even more important to combine and leverage paid search and organic efforts into one. Since paid search and SEO are dependent on keywords, it makes sense that both disciplines should be looked at through a similar lens. Here are 5 ways your business can start integrating the two right now.

1. Keyword   Research/Expansion

Use Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools to see what keywords are driving visits to your site. If those keywords/queries aren’t already present in your paid search campaign, add them in and try them out. Use your Adwords tools to determine if the traffic volume is worth the cost. On the flip side, take your highest converting paid terms and try to prioritize the ones you have a chance to rank organically. Start with the top converting and high quality score terms. Odds are, those keywords are very relevant to your business and may have a good chance at converting organically as well.

2. Paid Links + Organic Links = Clicks

Studies have shown that users have a higher propensity to click on your paid link if they see your organic link listed, as well the other way around. This may seem counter-intuitive, but the truth of the matter is that unless your organic ranking is within the top 3 positions, it’s a lot harder to come by clicks. If you’re not on the first page of the rankings, it’s even less likely you`ll get the traffic you`re looking for. A 2012 Google study says just that. As Brightedge put it “the study focused on the interactions between organic search results and paid ads found that even for sites claiming a No. 1 organic ranking, paid ads provided 50 percent incremental clicks (meaning, half of the top-ranking site`s visits would not have happened without the presence of paid ads).” Basically, if you aren’t running paid search in tandem with your top organic links you could be leaving clicks on the table.

3. Leverage Compelling Copy

Take your best performing ads in terms of click thru rate and conversion rate and try applying those headlines and ad copy into your Meta descriptions and title tags. Additionally, you can take copy from top performing organic pages and see how they work within paid ads.

4. Get Content Ideas

For SEO purposes, content really is king. Before developing content around certain keywords, topics, etc., try testing it with paid search first. Chances are that if it converts well in paid search it has a good chance of working for SEO too. If it doesn`t work on the paid side, it might not be worth investing too much of your time. With SEO, things take time to make an impact so paid search is a good way test ideas without spending a lot of time waiting for results.

5. Identify Competitors

13 | P a g e

Pay per Click reports can identify new competitors that you may have not even thought of as competitors. By looking at an insight report for keywords, you can see how you stack up against competitors searching for particular keywords.

These 5 ways can help improve both your paid search and SEO efforts and get insights about what works For small and large businesses alike, being able to save time and focus on the things that can make the most impact quickly is essential.
