Urban League

National Urban League, Inc. ( The League or NUL) is a non-profit organizations incorporated in 1910 in the State of New York. The Urban League of St. Louis was founded in 1918, during a domestic and foreign conflict with the purpose of defusing racial tension, stabilizing communities, and improving the living conditions for Black Americans in St. Louis and to meet this challenge, the Urban League, under the leadership of George Buckner, began the serious work of providing community services and solutions to Black Americans and others in need.

Progress

Although the Urban League of Metropolitan St.Louis began as a civil rights organization. It has evolved to include Economic Empowerment, Educational Quality and Equality, meeting Families basic needs, Civic Engagement and Social Justice, and sustainable quality services. Today, the Urban League of Metropolitan St Louis provides

ladders out of poverty for Black Americans and others through partnership with corporations, community leaders, governmental and civic institutions.

Mission

The Mission of the Urban League movement is to enable Black Americans to secure economic self-reliance parity power and civil rights this done. Empowering Families Through impactful

programs that change lives.(Jobs) “ Mission Every American has the right to access a job that provides a living wage and good benefits.”(Education) “ Mission Every American child is ready for college, work and lifelong learning.” (Housing) “ Mission Every American lives in a safe, decent, affordable and energy efficient housing in fair terms.” (Health) “Every American has access to quality of life and good health.”

Consumers

Urban League is a social service and advocacy organization that works on empowering communities and changing lives. walks in are phone appointments are available Monday-Friday 8:30-5pm The basic needs of the consumers are met by providing food, clothing, and other life necessities, while strengthening families and helping people become self-sufficient.The consumers are serviced by a large staff as well as volunteers.

Affiliations

 Members  

 The National Council of Urban League Guilds is comprised of volunteer auxiliaries of the National Urban League. Started in New York City in 1942 by Mrs. Mollie Moon, the National Council of Guilds is divided into 85 chapters across four regions. Guild members are considered to be the heart and soul of the Urban League movement, and contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually.   

The mission of the Council of Board Members is to assist individual board chairpersons in maximizing their effectiveness to lead and guide their local affiliates and boards. The Council also serves as a catalyst in strengthening the bond between the National office, local affiliates and their communities and constituents.

  Urban League Association of Executives consists of Urban League Presidents and Chief Executive Officers. The Association works to develop workshops, programs and policies to enhance personal and professional development and strengthen the members’ abilities to successfully lead their affiliates.

 

The National Urban League Young Professionals is comprised of volunteer auxiliaries of the various Urban League affiliates who range in age from 21-40. Launched in 1999 at the National Urban League’s Annual Conference in Houston, TX, the National Urban League Young Professionals is divided into over 63 chapters across the Urban League’s four regions. Young Professionals members are considered to be the next generation of leaders inside and outside the Urban League movement; and contribute thousands of dollars and volunteer hours to local Urban League affiliates annually and conduct professional development for its members.

Goals completed 2015

Quick Trip donated property to the Ferguson Community for a new Urban league the new facility will house the Urban league’s “Save Our Sons’ workforce program, which will provide job training and placement services for up to 500 Black -Americans and other young men in Ferguson and North St. Louis County over the next two years. The offices in Urban League are Provident, Better Family Life, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and Home State Health.
