SOURCE: Buck Institute for EducationADAPTED: EDUC 3620, Principles of Curriculum Development, Vanderbilt University and McKissack Middle Prep PROJECT DESIGN: OVERVIEW page 1 Name of Project: Helpful Horticulturalists Duration: 476 weeks (20730 minutes per day) Subject/Course: Science Teacher(s): Cockrill 1 st Grade Team Grade Level: 1 st Other subject areas to be included, if any: Literacy Design Team: Sara Godshall, Emily Hughes, Brittany Harrington (Team Leader) Significant Content (CCSS and/or others) GLE 0107.3.1 P Recognize that plants and animals are living things that grow and change over time. GLE 0107.3.2 P Describe what plants and animals need in order to grow and remain healthy. GLE 0107.8.1 P Collect daily weather information to predict what conditions might occur on the following day. GLE 0107.10.1 P Predict and determine what happens over the course of a school day when containers of sand, soil, and water with thermometers are placed in a sunny window. GLE 0107.10.2 P Predict and determine what happens over the course of a school day when containers of sand, soil and water with thermometers are placed in a shady location. CCSS.ELA7LITERACY.W.1.2 P Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. CCSS.ELA7LITERACY.W.1.7 P Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of “howPto” books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions). Big Questions Are plants alive? What do plants need in order to grow and survive? How can we record and predict the weather? Does amount of water and sunlight affect plant growth? How can we convey procedural knowledge through writing? In what ways can we work together as a team? How can we present our proposal in a way that is clear and well organized? 21 st Century Competencies (to be taught and assessed) Collaboration X Creativity and Innovation Communication X Other: Critical Thinking Project Summary (include student role, issue, problem or challenge, action taken, and purpose/beneficiary) Students will be asked to help develop a habitat for the second grade students’ butterfly project. Students will research the process of planting a garden and will individually author related informational texts (for example, “How to Grow a Garden”). Students will also design team proposals for planting a garden and will present their plans to a public audience. As timing and materials allow, students will plant and maintain their garden on school grounds to provide a habitat for the butterflies.
