The Spence Community Compass: Finding Home ARTIST(S): Leah Decter with The Spence Neighbourhood Association YEAR: 2008 PROGRAM: WITH ART MEDIA: Tile mosaic, concrete, text, indigenous plants This community-based artwork reflects upon ideas of home, place and belonging, expressing the diversity of the neighbourhood. city.block.stop ARTIST: David Perrett YEAR: 2010 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIA: Tyndall limestone, Mariash limestone, sandstone, steel, glass Conceived as a “gateway” to the University of Winnipeg campus, the shelter and sculpture are inspired by local geology and the geography of the city, carved to represent the Red, Assiniboine and Seine Rivers and the surrounding topography. DIY Field ARTIST(S): Germaine Koh YEAR: 2011 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIUM: Metal posts with interactive LED lights Recalling game and sport devices, this interactive grid of 38 pedestrian-scale light posts is controllable by park users. Each post contains red, green and blue LED lights with three buttons to turn each colour channel on and off separately. Picturing a Bright Future: The Eritrean Women’s Project ARTIST(S): Sarah Crawley with the Eritrean Community in Winnipeg YEAR: 2010 PROGRAM: WITH ART MEDIA: Photographs, quilt: cyanotypes on cotton Artist Sarah Crawley mentored recently immigrated Eritrean women in the art of photography over eighteen months as they continued to rebuild their lives in Winnipeg. Images on quilt by project participants, design and cyanotyping by Sarah Crawley, quilting by Rita Wasney. YOU YOU + YOU ARTIST(S): Jacqueline Metz and Nancy Chew YEAR: 2010 PROGRAM: Collaboration with the United Way of Winnipeg MEDIA: Cast aluminum, LED luminaries, interactive media for sound and light Created in collaboration with the United Way of Winnipeg, YOU YOU + YOU is an interactive artwork comprised of 11 lights representing the Braille for “YOU,” activated both automatically and by interaction with a cast aluminum talking stick that triggers audio notes on the pentatonic scale. Poster Boards in the Exchange ARTIST(S): Michael Carroll, Laurie Green and Judith Panson YEAR: 2009 PROGRAM: Collaboration with Exchange District BIZ MEDIUM: Steel Designs by Winnipeg artists have turned the functional poster boards of the Exchange District into unique works of art. Marbles on Portage ARTIST(S): Erica Swendrowski YEAR: 2012 PROGRAM: Artist-in-Residence/Collaboration with Downtown BIZ MEDIA: Fibreglass, plants, light By enlarging common and tiny playthings to giant proportions and incorporating lights and living plants, this work captivates the imagination of Winnipeggers young and old along a busy thoroughfare. Bike Racks on Broadway ARTIST(S): Jessica Koroscil; Vanessa Kroeker and Paul Butler; and Paul Robles YEAR: 2008 PROGRAM: Collaboration with Downtown BIZ MEDIA: Steel, automotive paint Twenty-one artist-designed bike racks are installed in the area of Broadway, one of Winnipeg’s most lovely and historic streets. From Here Until Now ARTIST(S): spmb (Eduardo Aquino and Karen Shanski) YEAR: 2012 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIA: Stainless steel, aluminum, concrete, LED lighting Art components are integrated into the bridge infrastructure on the handrails, in the paving pattern and on gateway markers. The design was created in response to community feedback to mark and celebrate the two distinct neighbourhoods on each side of the Assiniboine River. Untitled ARTIST: Cliff Eyland YEAR: 2005 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIUM: Mixed media on wood Eyland’s installation is composed of over 1,000 3” by 5” paintings, the size of traditional library catalogue cards, that include depictions of landscapes and figures both real and imagined. The Illumination ARTIST(S): Nicholas Wade YEAR: 2005 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIUM: Powder-coated steel The Illumination is comprised of the letters T H E locked in an architectural embrace. “It suggests the space of the library as a page written by a scribe. Three-dimensional typography is ‘illuminating’ a story, told in three-dimensional space,” says Wade. emptyful ARTIST(S): Bill Pechet YEAR: 2012 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIA: Stainless steel, lights, weather (all seasons), water and fog (summer only) emptyful is inspired by the idea that Winnipeg (and the surrounding prairies) is full of emptiness...a boundless space where various phenomena such as weather, light, seasons and human endeavour come and go. The work was created as a legacy project of the Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada designation in 2010. Sentinel of Truth ARTIST: Darren Stebeleski YEAR: 2012 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIA: Weathering steel, stainless steel Inspired by the library as protector of truth and ideas, this wall features short excerpts of text, subtly inscribed in different fonts and sizes, from fiction, poetry and nonfiction, all collected from various eras and locations. Elwick Community Centre ARTIST(S): Dimitry Melman-Komar with the Elwick Community YEAR: 2008 PROGRAM: WITH ART MEDIA: Ceramic, porcelain and glass tiles, sanded grout, acrylic paint The artist worked with the community to revitalize the Elwick Community Centre, an important hub in the diverse Maples neighbourhood. Together they created a mosaic mural that covers the outdoor walls of the Centre. lost_landscape ARTIST(S): Collin Zipp YEAR: 2007 PROGRAM: Artist-in-Residence MEDIA: Interactive installation of digitally manipulated video works Created through a twelve-month residency, this non-linear narrative video installation reflects the rich prairie landscape through abstracted images of its flora and fauna. Agassiz Ice ARTIST(S): Gordon Reeve YEAR: 2008 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIUM: Stainless steel Agassiz Ice recalls glacial Lake Agassiz that once covered an immense area that included the city of Winnipeg. The sculptures appear to be massive chunks of ice, reminiscent of the tips of the icebergs. Table of Contents ARTIST(S): spmb (Eduardo Aquino and Karen Shanski) YEAR: 2006 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIUM: Aluminum This 40-foot aluminum sculpture also functions as a community table and is inscribed with phrases contributed by area residents in many languages that express the park’s significance to the neighbourhood. The Birthing Project ARTIST(S): Judy Jennings with the Manitoba Maternity Care Action Network YEAR: 2008 PROGRAM: WITH ART MEDIA: Fused and lamp-worked glass, braided steel wire, nylon cord The artwork provides a vision of pregnancy and birth from many cultural perspectives and was created in glass by the artist, drawn from workshop discussions, sketches and photographs provided by community participants. land/mark ARTIST(S): Jacqueline Metz and Nancy Chew YEAR: 2009 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIA: Aluminum, granite Comprised of a mythical shed moose antler and a bench incised with markings depicting the city’s rivers and long lot system, land/mark ponders Winnipeg’s history and the marks we leave on the land. Monument ARTIST(S): Michel de Broin YEAR: 2009 PROGRAM: Commission MEDIUM: Granite Monument is the inaugural sculpture for the Jardin de sculptures at La Maison des artistes visuels in Saint-Boniface. Artist Michel de Broin uses a classical form and material to create a contemporary reflection on identity and representation.
