Mass Ave
Indianapolis Professional Firefighters Local 416 is transforming its downtown location into an exciting and active campus gathering place for both its members and the community.
In 1984, Local 416 purchased the abandoned 1872 Fire Station No. 2 on a disinvested Massachusetts Avenue. Years of sweat equity transformed the dilapidated building and grounds, now home to the Union Hall, Firefighter Museum, Survive Alive fire safety education program, State Union office and Memorial Plaza. This complex is now being expanded to better serve the over two-thousand active and retired firefighters that comprise the membership, while also providing the community with meeting and performance space in the now-vibrant Mass Ave Cultural District. The Firefighters have made their new meeting hall, as well as their outdoor gathering spaces, available as time-shared performance spaces to help keep the arts alive on Mass Ave.
The Local 416’s pioneering investment in the abandoned historic firehouse served as a catalyst in the neighborhood’s revitalization. In the center of a now-thriving Mass Ave Cultural District, the expanded Union Hall and The Point plaza will continue to host not only Local 416 functions, but also community events such as the annual IndyFringe Festival, World Cup pop-up events, and Indy Pride parade, among others.
The garden setting of the Art Park[ing] Court and its heroic edge, the Promethean Walk Sculpture, will imbue those events with the Firefighters’ spirit at this Mass Ave-College Avenue intersection and point of interest along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. Following is a description of the campus elements shown above:
1 The Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana occupies two adjacent restored historic 1870's worker cottages. Appropriate because many early residents of the Chatham Arch neighborhood were firefighters at Station No. 2.
2 The Firefighters Credit Union is being relocated onto the campus. This will transform a former parking lot and streetscape gap into an active use on the avenue and consolidate membership services into one place. Creative funding associated with the sale of the Credit Union's existing building to the City for a large economic development project made the move possible: A side benefit of that development is that part of its new tax revenue has been dedicated to improvements to the streets, historic brick alley, and sidewalks serving both the Firefighters Campus and the surrounding historic neighborhood.

3 Fallen Firefighters Memorial Plaza was dedicated in July 1996. Renewal of this commemorative setting is being undertaken as part of the campus development. Phoenix Rising, Dale Enochs' limestone and bronze work, has aged gracefully but Its landscaped setting and lighting and will be renewed to maintain the special character of this spiritual place.
4 The Fire Museum, Survive Alive and Union Hall are being expanded and updated. The new building addition provides space for union offices and meeting halls, freeing up much needed space for the Fire Museum and Survive Alive experiences. The new meeting halls will be multifunctional, serving not only union and neighborhood events but will also be transformable into a black box theater space that supports the arts on Mass Ave.
5 The Walk of Distinction, honoring Firefighter/Foreign War Veterans, was dedicated in May 2000 and is currently located along the edge of the Memorial Plaza. It will be relocated along the new entrance terrace facing the Point to give both it and the Fallen Firefighters Memorial their own dedicated sites and integrity rather than one being the background of the other. The massive, rough hewn inscribed limestone blocks will affect a continuous procession and transition between Memorial Plaza and the Art Park[ing] Court's Promethean Walk.
6 The Point, at the intersection of College Avenue, St. Clair Street and Massachusetts Avenue, has long been a venue for gatherings as diverse as neighborhood block parties, Fire Department Instructor Conference [FDIC] welcoming, World Games, and the IndyFringe Theatre Festival.
3PrometheanWalk|Gift of Fire
The Promethean Walk Sculpture will be both a physical and symbolic anchor for the Firefighters Campus and its surrounding Mass Ave Cultural District.
Part of that space will be used for the Union Hall's new meeting rooms and office addition. The remainder will become landscaped open space, and a safer and more experiential entry for the more than eight thousand school children that visit Survive Alive annually. It will provide a dedicated drop off and waiting lane along St. Clair Street for the school buses that currently contribute to Mass Ave congestion.
7 The Art Park[ing] Court technically replaces parking spaces lost to the Credit Union project, serving Local 416 staff, membership and visitors. Much more than an ordinary parking lot, it will be an inspiring gathering place for events hosted by the Firefighters and community organizations. It features a brick-paved parking and gathering space sized for event tents, with edges landscaped to respect the adjoining historic residential neighborhood. It features a neighborhood gateway identity marker. for the historic neighborhood, Chatham Arch. And it features the Promethean Walk Sculpture, depicting the heroic bearer of the Gift of Fire from ancient Greek mythology.
8 Promethean Walk|Gift of FIre Noted Indiana sculptor Dale Enochs has been commissioned to develop this major public art piece symbolizing the role of firefighters who daily honor that gift in service to the community. The sculpture is a gift of art for the community at-large and the community of firefighters that have and will continue to gather at this place. The piece is 125 feet long and will extend along the College Avenue frontage of the parking court from Arch Street to St. Clair Stree, buffered from traffic by a tilted plane of perennial grass.
4PrometheanWalk|Gift of Fire
The Promethean Walk will anchor the east end of the Firefighters Campus along College Avenue. Its limestone and metal elements increase in scale over a distance of 125 feet, from several feet high near Arch Street to the sixteen foot tall heroic figure near St. Clair Street.
The walkway's foreground along busy College Avenue is comprised of a tilted plane of perennial grass that rises from the curb to seating height to form a buffering edge and spatial environment for the sculpture and for the Art Park[ing] Court beyond.
The figure of Prometheus will be approached by downtown-bound travelers along College Avenue, as well as by walkers and cyclists traveling the Indianapolis Cultural Trail from the Payne Connect10n, the celebratory point of convergence of the Monon, Pogues Run and Cultural Trails at 10th Street and Mass Ave.
Prometheus will be within sight of the IndyFringe Basile Theatre's front door, appropriate because the firefighters have hosted the IndyFringe Theatre Festival since its 2005 inception. The new facilities have been designed to continue that tradition of hosting the community's cultural events and celebrations.
The Firefighters Campus will transform the College Avenue and Mass Ave intersection into
an activated Cultural District node and point of interest along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail as that linear park and
passage begins its journey linking the Indianapolis Cultural Districts.

Where in the Cityis Prometheus?
The Promethean Walk Sculpture is a 125 foot long assemblage of incised limestone and internally illuminated layered metal forms. The Promethean Walk is a 125 foot long sculpture of multiple elements consisting of incised limestone and internally illuminated layered metal forms. The heroic sixteen foot tall striding figure of Prometheus will be a striking district landmark for walkers and cyclists along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and motorists approaching downtown along College and Mass Avenues. Prometheus holds an orb of fire, the mythological gift to humankind representing creativity and, if not respected and controlled, danger. The Promethean Walk and these meanings will be part of the visitor experience, including that of schoolchildren visiting Survive Alive. The sculpture complements Dale Enochs' earlier Phoenix Rising sculpture in Fallen Firefighters Memorial area on Mass Ave, creating a sense of one place across the overall campus..
6PrometheanWalk|Gift of Fire
And who is this Prometheus? Prometheus was the mythological Titan of forethought and crafty counsel, and creator of humankind. As the story was told by the ancient Greek epic poet/philosopher Hesiod in roughly 700 BC, Prometheus was a second generation Titan offspring, sometimes called a demi-god, of the primordial deities, Uranus (the Heavens/Sky) and Gaia (Mother Earth).
The myth presents the immortal Prometheus as the creator of humankind to whom he gave Fire, the Arts of Civilization and more. After the easily-irritated God Zeus took away fire from humans, Prometheus stole it back through trickery and returned it to earth. As “punishment” for that act, so the myth goes, Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock and ordered the creation of Pandora, giving her a box of secrets and instructions to never open it. Pandora unwittingly released the furies (pestilence, from the box Zeus had given her, but also had the good wits to retain Hope.
The complete mythology is complex, with layers of meaning that have busied and baffled scholars, philosophers, theologians and artists for nearly three millennia.
It has counterparts in the belief systems of all the great world religions.
For those so inclined, the website below can be informing and entertaining regarding the appropriateness of this artwork to this place and our time.
http://www.greekmythology.com/Myths/The_Myths/The_Creation/the_creation.html
Mythology has been an influence on Dale Enochs’ explorations as well, though he is loath to pontificate about those meanings, leaving that to the observer.

Artist's StatementI have been working as an independent artist for thirty-two years, thus far successfully completing twenty-four public art commissions and three in progress. My work is in private, public, corporate and museum collections in the United States, Japan and China. Every public piece that I do is created specifically for a given site. The approach that I take to develop a composition for public work begins with listening carefully to the desires of the client and understanding the context of the proposed environment. I personally study the location for the work as well as architectural drawings of the area, taking into account the surrounding architecture and landscape, how the space will be used, the eventual pedestrian traffic, and the history of the project's area and its community. Overall, my intent is to create a cohesive statement with a dynamic visual composition that addresses a project and its relationship to its environment. I often take a “macrocosm / microcosm” approach to my work. This is to say that the completed artwork has a dynamic presence from a distance but it also draws the viewer into a closer inspection due to the myriad of detail work within a composition.
Ultimately I believe that art has the power to address people on many levels and the potential to bring diverse images and ideas together making them whole, and to bring people together and speak of their shared ideals. These challenges are at the heart of what motivates the work that I do.

Layered Metal ElementsAbove is a detail from a recent Enochs' figurative work, a precursor to Promethean Walk's layered metal elements. It will be scaled up to the heroic proportions of the sixteen foot tall central figure. Perforated black metal outside layers will reveal the middle layer's illuminated color gradations for a dynamic visual experience, while concealed uplighting will dramatically graze the textured stones' surfaces.
Figured Limestone ElementsPictured above is a detail from Enochs' Rolling Rhythm (2008) indicative of carving/scribing techniques proposed for Promethean Walk limestone elements. Those range from several feet to nearly eleven feet tall across a 125 foot expanse. Adjoining paths and gaps in the composition invite interaction, while the large scale subdues the urban distractions of traffic to create an immersive experience.

Pledge Form: Help fund the Promethean WalkThe Indianapolis Professional Firefighters Local 416 is expanding and enhancing its Mass Ave campus to better serve its membership and community. The project includes an expanded Fire Museum and Survive Alive fire safety education facility, new offices and training rooms, and a large multipurpose meeting hall. The latter is adaptable to "black box" theater" presentations by IndyFringe Theatre Festival and also available for neighborhood celebrations. The membership has taken on a 30-year mortgage to finance the six million dollar campus and building project. The City of Indianapolis has contributed over $300,000 to upgrading surrounding streets, sidewalks, and historic brick alley.
But the truly exciting public element is The Promethean Walk, a heroic sculpture based on the ancient myth of the Promethean Gift of Fire to humankind. It forms the eastern edge of the campus along College Avenue, and will be another public art element along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
The creation of the park-like campus and outdoor open spaces will also support a range of community events. The Point, at the intersection of College, St. Clair and Mass Ave will become home of the Walk of Distinction, and a renewed gathering space. Across St. Clair Street from the Point, the new parking lot will be a beautifully landscaped, brick paved Art Park[ing] Court that can host a big tent. The 125-foot long Promethean Walk sculpture by artist Dale Enochs will form a gateway to the Mass Ave Cultural District. Help us fund this special place and its exciting piece of art.
