When considered next to the lack of freedoms many people in this world experience, I imagine the majority of Americans have it pretty good. However, as Christians, we are free from something even stronger – free from the power of sin through the power and life of Christ Jesus. In Christ, this freedom from sin offers up the freedom to live for others, not for ourselves and with that comes choice. How we exercise the freedoms we receive says much about our commitments and convictions. For instance, just because I can get in my car and drive the short .3 miles to church doesn’t mean I have to. I can make the choice to walk and do my part for the sake of others so they may enjoy the freedom of having clean air and water – free from the pollutants of my vehicle. It’s a simple example I know, but highlights one way in which self-less-ness can be a “freedom for” in our life in Christ. As you gather round the picnic table this 4 th of July, hot dogs in hand, I invite you to give pause to think of those things you are free from this Independence Day and give thanks for those things you are free for and have a wonderful 4 th of July! NEW PROMISE LUTHERAN CHURCH of St. George Utah •A Ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Dear Friends,

As we celebrate another Independence Day as a nation this month and look forward to the fireworks, BBQ’s and time with family, I’m reminded of the passage in Galatians where the apostle Paul reminds the people “we are called to freedom – only do not use that freedom as an opportunity for self- indulgence…you reap whatever you sow.” Galatians 6: 7-10

On the 4th, both the calendar and country invite us to reflect and celebrate the freedom we receive and I invite us all to take just a moment to think for a minute: “What freedom are you thankful for?” Among the responses might be: The freedom to travel where I want, when I want; freedom to sit wherever I want on the bus; freedom to worship whatever and wherever I want; freedom of expression and the list could go on. When considered next to the lack of freedoms many people in this world experience, I imagine the majority of Americans have it pretty good.

Americans are for the most part, free from oppressions, war and cruel governing and we can give thanks to those who’ve gone before us and to the founders of this nation for ensuring those freedoms continue.

As you gather round the picnic table this 4th of July, hot dogs in hand, I invite you to give pause to think of those things you are free from this Independence Day and give thanks for those things you are free for and have a wonderful 4th of July!

New Promise Lutheran Council Minutes—June 18th

Pastors’ Joe & Jill Doherty Jenni Day – Council Member - Absent Dave Preston—Council Member Eric Nicholaus—Council Member Rick Morin, Council President Indigo Klabanoff, Council Vice President Barbara Bengston, Council Secretary Bob Egner—Church Treasurer

Pastor Joe began the meeting with prayer. Pastor Jill led the devotion discussion on chapter 2 in “the Post Covid Quarantine Church”

New Business

There needs to be a list of those responsible for spending control for each committee. Pastor Joe and Rick Morin will contact the committees to get names of Spending Controllers.

Separation of duties was again discussed. Counters are usually couples. Since it is difficult to even get counters the available counters should be included in the conversation on how to achieve this level of security. We should, also revitalize and try to get more people involved.

Eric Nicholaus will gather a list of counters and possible new counters and invite them into the discussion.

Ushers are now taking the collection to the safe in pairs of unrelated persons.

Summer meeting schedule was discussed. Rick will be gone in July and Barbara will be gone in August. For purposes of worship planning a meeting will be necessary in July. Worship team will meet early in week of July 4 to discuss what they will want council input. So, council will meet July 9 at 3:00. Indigo will conduct the meeting and meet with executive committee {Indigo, Pastor Jill and Barbara} on Tuesday July 6 at 4:30.

The question was asked “Why are we still doing social distancing?” Restrictions have been lifted for those who are vaccinated. Not everyone in our congregation are vaccinated and we will not ask or ask for vaccination cards. Pastor Jill is planning a new calling list to focus on people we have not seen since covid.

Committee reports:

E Team has its shredding event set to go. {It did happen and appeared to be a big success.}

Finance is reported to be all in line and the financial report was sent to each of us.

Pastor Joe’s report

The new phone system is mostly finished with installation and critical aspects sre up and running. He questioned the $80 cost of a dedicated line for the fire system when the fire system could be hooked up to a cell phone. What would happen if cell towers went out? {Cell towers overlap.} What would happen if landline was damaged?

Stephen Ministry is set up and scheduled in October in conjunction with 3 other churches.

Mutual ministry tam has met. This committee is not required to report to council.

Pastor Joe missed the Synod meeting. He was either on a plane or waiting in a public waiting area so could not log into the meeting. John and Marsha Watson did attend the meeting and are willing to give a report to the congregation.

Pastor Jill’s report

The Youth Mission trip was a success. The disappointment of missing the trip to New York last year due to covid gave way to a much better experience. Mission trips will be every other year.

Pastor Jill is presently reviewing our system of protecting our children’s privacy. Getting parental permission for our digital uses, pictures, and videos. Also, what is used in Promise Together which is a system available to only New Promise.

Confirmation retreat will be August 27-29 for grades 6-8.

Jill asked for continuing prayers for the Day Camp.

Rick suggested we all share the responsibility of beginning and end council meeting in prayer.

Pastor Jill ended the meeting with prayer.

The motion was made and seconded to approve May’s minutes. Motion carried. A motion was made to suggest asking the media director to look into how best to back up the churches data; to put it in the hands of the media director to makes suggestions for us. The motion was seconded. Motion carried .

We Need Innkeepers

Worship is central to everything we do as a community of faith. In worship we are reminded of who

we are by virtue of our baptism and what we are called to as followers of Jesus. Worship is the way

God shapes us as individuals and as a community for the Kingdom of God.

At New Promise, Innkeepers is one of the ways the Gospel is proclaimed and we practice our faith -

offering hospitality, practicing stewardship, learning service and discovering our gifts. In the time of

Covid, that has looked vastly different than ever before and yet, is still and essential part of who we

are as a people of God in this place.

The role of Innkeepers is incredibly important as we look toward regaining some of the

"familiar" elements of Sunday Worship. It's been a long year and there is increased desire to have

more familiarity in gathering for worship - including increased seating in the worship spaces.

Innkeepers is but one piece to being able to regaining what is "familiar" - another is the future of

the ongoing pandemic.

Since we can only focus on what is within our realm of control, so it is this email comes asking YOU

to sign up for one of the Innkeeper roles. Your participation is and always has been key to enabling

worship to happen on Sundays. The Innkeeper sign ups for summer are posted and are empty so

please take a look to see how you might serve. Thank you for your partnership in ministry!

Thank you for your continued financial Support to New Promise’s ministries!

Stephen Ministry

Pastor Joe and the Stephen Leaders are putting out a call to people of New Promise who may be interested in becoming a Stephen Minister. Training for new Stephen Ministers will be done at New Promise this fall.

As you know, Stephen Ministers provide Christian support to members of our congregation who have suffered a loss of a loved one or may be experiencing a personal loss in their life that is too difficult to deal with without some support.

The Stephen Minister’s job is to “walk” with their care receiver rather than “solve” the problem. This requires that the Stephen Minister meet with their care receiver for one hour each week. That care is done by phone at this time, but within months (assuming continued progress on the pandemic) Stephen Ministers and care receivers will be able to meet face to face.

If you are interested unbecoming a Stephen Minister you may feel comforted to know that before you are assigned a care receiver you will receive excellent extensive training to prepare you for the role of care-giver. Once you are seeing a care receiver regularly you will also meet with Stephen Leaders, Pastor Joe, and the other New Promise Stephen Ministers to receive support and supervision. The training and the supervision meetings are lively and very helpful for all involved.

Come Join us! Talk with Pastor Joe or Jill, a Stephen Leader (Pat Teicher, Larry Palm, or Karen Vieira)

OFFERING
