Greeley has always been proactive with the use of
seal coating for maintenance practices
Develop a test program to compare the different seal coats used in Colorado in one location
COMPAREEnsure all test sections receive
similar traffic loadings and atmospheric effects, on a
“typical” segment of road with uniform distresses
HOMOGENEITY
Perform monthly evaluations of each section, and make the
findings available to the public

HISTORY
Project began as a discussion between Pat Hill and John Wood. We saw the need to compare the many new technologies and products in pavement preservation
CONCEPTION
A plan was developed to create a pilot project to evaluate seal coat materials and processes, placed on the same road at the same time exposed to the same conditions
PLANNING
After test site was identified, the test sections were awarded on a “first come, first serve” basis.
We wanted to avoid having duplicate sections
LOCATION
Vendors were to supply material and labor at no cost to the City. NCTC was selected to provide
traffic control

SITE ORGANIZATION & DETAILSDivided into 14 total sections, each 100’ long and 31’ wide
SECTIONSA 20’ long segment of road between sections 9 and 10
was selected to act as a control
CONTROLFeatures a wide variety of products and applications
from multiple vendors
VARIABILITY

SECTIONSAPPLIED
The sections were applied between July and October of 2016. The 11 separate closures required excellent communication with local residents

EVALUATION& ANAYLSIS
To analyze the performance of the seal coat products, staff developed a process to evaluate the seal coats and publish the findings over the next two years
PERFORMANCE
There are 9 criteria upon which each section is evaluated on a 1 through 5 scale
CRITERIA
Evaluations are consistently conducted by multiple members of the SIM staff around the 1st of each month

MOVINGFORWARD
Project is approximately two thirds through its life cycle, with final evaluations planned for the Fall of 2018. After two full Winters and one Summer of wear, each section has started to show some degree of deterioration
CURRENTLY
Greeley will continue to monitor each section closely as snow plow damage, weathering, and wear continue to degrade the seal coat materials
Ongoing Analysis
Moving forward. Where do we see the project after a year and a half? In five years?
NEXT STEPS
