Introduction‘May you live in interesting times’ is a well-known proverb, butit is doubtful, outside the scope of science-fiction films, that anyof us could have imagined, let alone expected to find ourselves tobe living, arriving as it has in such a very short time frame, through the extraordinary effects of coronavirus 19, with socialdistancing, lockdown, and major recession affecting the greaterpart of the world’s population.

With social distancing likely to remain in one form or anotheruntil such times as a vaccine is discovered and deployed (alwaysassuming that one can be found), the adverse effects on socialinteraction, be it at work, interacting with friends or family, ormerely engaging in what are mass social settings are likely to bewith us for the long term.

The impact on employment across a wide sphere of industries, from retail, aviation, travel tourism and more, is material. Bars, restaurants, and social venues will be ‘socially distanced’ and thusuneconomic, and of course lacking the very buzz and excitementwhich have, pre-Covid, been their hallmark, and likely to find thata large percentage of consumers will be reluctant to play Russianroulette for what is strictly an optional risk exposure.

As a result of the virus the impact on the drinks industry was feltfrom day one of lockdown. Sadly we will be feeling itsrepercussions for years to come. Our thoughts are with all thosefor whom the outcome of this crisis is damage to health, employment, income, business viability and mental well-being.We will lose friends and many familiar names and venues will notresurface, or not at least as we previously enjoyed them.

Seminars such as the Gin Guild Ginposium will not be resumeduntil audiences and speakers feel safe. I hope that our attempts toreplicate, so far as practical, the cancelled live 2020 event as aremotely accessible and remotely filmed event will go some waytowards providing an alternative delivery.

I would welcome event feedback and comments as to how wemight expand or improve our ‘virtual’ delivery for 2021, andbeyond, and as to whether an additional input and similar virtualprovision later in the year would be welcomed given the loss of somany gin-related events/launches etc.

Topics and speaker proposals (for selection/consideration), pleaseto me at [email protected]

Stay safe. Nicholas Cook, Director-General, The Gin Guild

Welcome

The past couple of months have been beyond strange. Theweeks have passed in a blur whilst ways of working at thedistillery have been changed significantly, whilst I’ve calledround food delivery services trying to get some food to myparents who are self-isolating, or whilst I try and forget it all bydisappearing into endless episodes on Netflix.

When I do take a moment to stop and think and look aroundme the initial reaction is a negative one. With the on-tradeshut down around the globe and people quarantined andunable to socialise it can feel pretty grim. In the midst of itthough I am proud of how the gin industry has reacted to thecrisis, whilst dealing with the loss of a large proportion of ourcustomer base many of us have turned our talents to blendinghand sanitiser for donation to those who need it. My ownexperience of doing this at Laverstoke began as a way ofensuring that my team and their families had sanitiser to staysafe. It quickly became apparent that much larger volumeswere needed by frontline workers and the response we havehad from the recipients has been overwhelming.

So many normal activities have had to be altered to cope withthe lockdown restrictions and Ginposium is no different. Withthe hard work of our Director General we have managed to pulltogether a programme that has been pre-recorded for you towatch in the safety of your own homes. This was no mean featand as ever Nicholas Cook’s tenacity was sorely needed.

One of my favourite parts of any Gin Guild event is having thechance to catch up with so many of our members and to meetnew people in the networking sessions. I am pleased that wehave managed to move this online also and I hope to see manyof you at the Zoom drinks on Friday 12th June.

As we head into a summer of uncertainty please rememberthat the Gin Guild is here to help you and work for you. Reachout and let us know if there’s anything more we could be doingto support you all, we all need to think a little differently andworking together will only make us all stronger.

Beyond the soundbite - integrating sustainability into your distillery

Will Edge is the Founder and Distiller at Greensand RidgeDistillery. A lifelong booze hobbyist, his keyboard daydreamsof forging a career in the sector could have taken him in anydirection - brewing, cidermaking, distilling - but it wasundertaking a Masters Degree in Brewing & Distilling whichhelped to narrow his focus. As a lifelong environmentalist, hebegan planning a distillery which would marry his passions forfine spirits of all types with an environmentalist approach.Launched in 2015, Greensand Ridge Distillery now producesGins, Rums, Brandies and Whiskies, winning awards for theirlow-impact approach to spirits production.

Greensand Ridge simply want to make the finest spiritspossible that truly reflect the flavours of the woods, orchards, fields and hedgerows that surround our distillery.

Greensand Ridge Premium London Dry Gin includes eightbotanicals that can be found within a mile of the distillery.

Greensand Ridge conceived Greensand Ridge Distillery byasking the question, how to you take an energy intensiveprocess as distilling is, and not only reduce its environmentalfootprint, but have it make a positive contribution tosustainability?

They use advanced technology and 100% renewable energy, but also work with our region's farmers to reduce food waste atthe farm gate by fermenting and distilling quality produce thatsupermarkets won't take

The significant growth in the number of distilleries producing ginsmeans that there are now a growing and often confusing numberof gin styles and tastes to navigate. An initiative, launched by theGin Guild, is designed to help distillers promote their gin byreference to the flavour (and not just by reference to price orpackaging).

The Gin Guild, in consultation with over sixty brands, includingrepresentatives from some of the world’s key producers, launcheda descriptive framework (Gin-Note™), for use by brands.

Gin-Note™ is a standardized flavour profile graphic tool, providingconsumers and retailers alike with a uniform and easy to operatesystem for identifying one gin from another based on flavour.

See: https://www.theginguild.com/gin-note/

The approach is a combination of a simple graphic and text. It isdesigned to provide a consistent approach to describing taste andflavour in gin.

Gin-Note™, flavour guidance is prepared by brands themselvesusing a fixed and consistent framework, alongside their ownbranding descriptions, to inform, educate and guide those seekingto explore the category.

Tasting Panel

Audience tasting of (numerous) samples, each illustrating afacet of various speakers presentations, is a highlight of theGinposium.

Sadly, this year we obviously have to forgo the live audiencethat usually participates at the Ginposium.

We usually have several seminars with tasting elements, butmost speakers this year have had to restructure their sessionsto reflect the distanced recording process etc.

Hopefully, normal service can be resumed in 2021 with a fullline up of samples for the delectation of our delegates.

We have a provisional Ginposium date of 4th June 2021, butwill be dependent on what is happening at that time withCovid 19.

This year, with Covid 19, we have to operate detached fromhuman contact. With the event thrown open to the world viathe Guild website, we have tried to go someway to bridging thegap by having a small panel taste the samples by distancedtastings at home. We have captured the panel comments byZoom and/or email comments for the sessions from David TSmith and Stephen Gould.

Our thanks to our panel members who comprise:

After spending some time workingwith the Shop and Tours team, Alice eventually joined theR&D lab in October 2019.

“During my short time in the industry I have fallen in love withalmost every aspect of distillery life and have recentlycompleted my General Certificate in Distilling. I leapt at theopportunity to attend Ginposium as, looking forward, I amexcited to spend more time in the industry and soak up asmuch knowledge as possible from those who have been heremuch longer than me. Moving forward I would like to gainexperience in the production of a broader range of spirits, aswell as eventually completing my Diploma in distilling.”

Casting an Eagle eye on the US gin scene

Golden Moon Distillery – Maison De La Vie, Ltd. was foundedby Stephen Gould and Dr Karen Knight in early 2008,specifically to produce premium hand-crafted herbal liquorsand liqueurs using the best available herbs, spices andbotanicals, and made with the same type of artisan productionprocesses utilized by distillers making premium products inthe mid-to-late 1800s.

The heart of Golden Moon Distillery is Mr. Gould’s world-classresearch library containing hundreds of rare books ondistillation and related products and processes, some datingback to the 1500s. Most of the collection dates from the late1700s to the early 1900s, though there are a few titles that aremuch older, or newer.

Maison De La Vie stills include four antique stills which datefrom the early to mid-1900’s.

Maison De La Vie uses environmentally friendly packaging andbusiness practices as much as possible. We source as manymaterials as we can from local producers (reducing shippingand the related carbon footprint), and are working with localwineries to utilize some of their cast-off materials in ourproduction and packaging processes. Our solid waste from ourdistilling processes is used as compost and feed by localfarmers and gardeners.

We produce Gin, Absinthe, Grappa, Apple Jack and SpecialtyLiquors / Liqueurs including our Crème de Violette and Amerdit Picon.
