Mr. KevinHead of Year 2 - - - - - - - - - -

Year 2 have been working extremely well during the first term. All the teachers have all been delighted

with the quality of work produced in all classes. We now hope the

children can maintain these high levels throughout the year.

he children have been learning Tabout the importance of using instructions in the real world. The quality of the writing has been superb!

W e have been studying about plants and animals. We went on an exploration around school to identify similarities and differences in plants.

During the term we have developed our throwing and catching skills. We

participated in a range of activities to improve our ball control and accuracy. We have also been learning techniques to improve our swimming.

During the first week of term we created a portrait of ourselves by utilising ideas from the Artist David Hockney. Can you see how our portraits are different?

During Maths lessons we have been working towards objectives linked to counting,

partitioning and calculating.

During our creating pictures unit of

work, we used a range of tools to create

portraits and a map of Ho Chi Minh City

showing the districts.

aths is a very strong subject at the ABCIS and the children Mmake very good progress with their number and calculation work, but these are not the only areas that we study.

It is easy to forget when we are teaching that there is a huge amount of key vocabulary that is taught and we

expect our classes to remember and use all these words appropriately. This area of the Mathematics curriculum has the largest amount of vocabulary, from names of shapes to units of measurement.

This is an area of Mathematics that comes in very useful in other subjects, particularly in ICT and Science

lessons where we need to collect data. Children have lots of opportunities to investigate, measure and record their results in tables and graphs.

Shape, Space and Measures

Handling Data

In the Early Years department a large part of the children's mathematical work is linked in with their learning through play and through exploration. As they progress through the

school, while there are still plenty of practical tasks using a variety of instruments, the focus moves more to completing exercises in their workbooks. Some children love to complete pages and pages of calculations.

Of course, rapid mental calculation skills and an ability to use efficient written methods to calculate are very important, however, without the ability to take these skills and apply them in real life situations, this knowledge will never be useful outside of a classroom. Teachers look for as many opportunities as possible to make learning opportunities relevant, challenging classes to decide for themselves which mathematical concept they should be using.

Using and Applying Skills

“We enjoy doing Maths because we like thinking and working things out. Also, if I achieve at the first level, I like to challenge myself to get to the next level.” Khoi, 5W

“I like it because Maths isn't too hard or too easy and it is challenging and fun.” Sunny, 5W

“I liked when we learnt about 3D shapes. We learnt lots of vocabulary like faces, vertices and edges.”Ly Ly, 3E

“But I also like doing other Maths, like using number squares.”

Khang, 3E

“We like problem solving best. It's important to learn about Maths and real-life together.”

Edmodo is a fantastic tool for facilitating learning in and out of the classroom. In Key Stage 2 it gives our students the chance to use a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) safely.

It is important to make sure that the students at The ABCIS are safe when online. To prevent outsiders from joining school networks, Edmodo provides special codes to schools and classes. These codes are given to the student and are necessary to join groups. This means that only students from The ABCIS can access these groups, which are monitored by their class teaches.

The Edmodo Backpack is like a virtual flash drive. Students can store an unlimited amount of files and links in their backpack. Students can attach items from their Backpack to Posts or assignments. This means that student can complete work at home and put it 'in' their backpack, then at school they can access their backpack and retrieve saved work.

In Year 3 students study the topic of Internet and once students have a full understanding of how to keep themselves safe online, then we introduce Edmodo. We have class groups and a communal curriculum resource group in which we add a number of resources.

Year 4 utilise Edmodo as a tool for supporting students with curriculum resources as well as using it as a platform so that students can discuss homework, activities and group work.

In Year 5 it is also used as a supportive tool where students can support each other with their homework and class work at the same time teachers can support them with this too. We also set webpage links that might be of interest to students to further their education.

Year 6

'…Edmodo is excellent because it enables students to work collaboratively on projects outside

of school...’

'…Having Edmodo means that students can ask their teachers and other students for help and advice from their homes. They can also share useful websites linked to school work as well as check each other's work before it is submitted…' Ms Sue, Year 6

'It's not what you do that your classmates remember, it's how you helped them on Edmodo'. Keegan, 6S

“I have had a great time throughout these last four weeks. One of the most enjoyable experiences was raising money for Week. Because of this I am sure I will enjoy the rest of my time in Year 6.” Tae Hyeon, 6K

“Although there is more homework and new rules, I have enjoyed Year 6 so far. I like doing Maths in Year 6 because it's challenging and I love the fact that a Secondary student called Alex comes to help 6K once a week. I like my new P.E and Swimming teacher (Mr. Robert); he has been very kind to 6K. The final thing I have enjoyed is my newest lesson, French, because Mr. Eugene has taught me a lot so far. I look forward to enjoying these and many other lessons throughout the rest of this year.” Thong, 6K

Moving Forward in Year 6

W e have been back at school for five weeks and all of the Year 6

students have settled well into their classes. We have also been

joined by a group of students who have adapted well to their new

school and already made themselves valuable members of the year

group. This is an exciting year for the children with many challenges

and opportunities, including the Year 6 Trip to Central Vietnam and

the chance to take on extra responsibility as Prefects and Library

Assistants, which many have already started to do. So how do the

students themselves feel about their first taste of Year 6?

“I'm really looking forward to studying in Year 6. I really love being a Library Assistant. It's a nice job where I get to work and help Mr. Jonathan. The Year 6 work should be challenging enough for me, like the egg drop challenge! I'm looking forward to learning about micro-organisms; it will be fun to look at them.”

Sera, 6S

“I am really looking forward to the Titanic project. It looks like an interesting way to learn about shipwrecks. I like being an ICT Prefect because it is fun making sure the computers are ready for the lessons. I really love learning in Year 6 because the new things I explore in school are the key to success!”

Timothy, 6S

“In Year 6, we have the chance to be Prefects. We have to be responsible and more mature. I like being a role model for the younger students in school because it makes me feel proud. We are all excited about the year ahead and we have had fun participating in sMMile Week and the wonderful concert. Year 6 is a big change for everyone, a new teacher, new classmates and new lessons. I enjoy making new friends and learning new topics. In Year 6, we have lots of challenging homework but it helps us develop our organisational skills and be more responsible. We also have new lessons such as French with Mr. Eugene. We love learning new foreign languages because it will be useful in the future. So far we have enjoyed our time in Year 6 and hope we will continue to succeed in the year ahead.” Suemi & Oliver, 6D

“Year 6 has been an amazing experience so far this year. We were very excited on the first day of school because we met our friends again after a very long vacation. It also gave us a chance to meet new students.

We have been learning about more interesting topics in Year 6. There is more space in the new swimming pool that was built over the summer. We are very lucky to be given the responsibility to be Prefects and look after the younger children at school. We are proud to be Prefects!

The first big event in school was sMMile WEEK. There were lots of fun activities that happened, such as SOAK THE TEACHER! , The haunted house, non -uniform day and the Concert. I was shocked by how much money the whole school raised for the charity.

We are really look forward to the Year 6 trip after hearing from the Year 6s last year they mentioned that they really enjoyed it so I hope that we do too.

We're really enjoying Year 6 because we get to learn in a fun and educational way.”

sMMile Week“Feel Good” Celebration

th th15 - 19 September 2014

On 15th of September- 19th of September, we once again celebrated 'sMmile Week' with lots of fun activities such as designing clowns using

a computer programme, making smiles on lolly sticks, face painting, watching funny videos, making fruit kebabs, cartoon corner, cartoon drawing, Glee and Flash Mob dancing. The teachers also prepared a creative skit based on the story of 'Peter Pan'. The children enjoyed the very competitive staff 'tug of war'. The students, teachers, staff and parents were very generous with their time and donations in aid of Operation Smile Foundation. I would like to give a big thank you to all. In the end our campus raised 11,450,000 vnd, which is a fantastic achievement.

Have a look at some of our fun-filled photos.
