Indiana’s logistics success is a story of momentum, which when boiled down to its

basic principle is really just another way of describing how well things are moving. The underlying formula is all too familiar. An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force, and any steps taken to avoid those outside forces result in a savings of time and energy. In physics, the major outside variables that slow things down are gravity and friction. In logistics, those slowing forces are infrastructure and regulations. In both cases, once those objects slow down or stop, it requires a substantial input of energy to get them moving again. The key to maximizing efficiency between point A and point B always involves sustaining momentum. If you want to know how Indiana delivers products quickly and more efficiently, you only need to look to that basic principle.

Indiana has spent years developing a logistics network that maximizes efficiency. With more intersecting highways than any other state, and a 10-year, $10-billion infrastructure improvement plan in place, Indiana’s road freight handling capacity is unparalleled. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the Hoosier state is within a single day’s drive

By Victor Smith, Indiana Secretary of Commerce

to 80 percent of the U.S. population. But that only scratches the surface. In the center of Indiana’s highway system is the world’s second largest FedEx hub, and radiating outward are over 4,000 miles of railways. Beyond that are three international maritime ports, each a foreign trade zone, accessing the Great Lakes to the north and the Ohio and Mississippi river system to the south. When combined, it represents a network that is capable of sending any product, by any carrier mode, in any direction, to all points of the globe with staggering speed and efficiency.

You might say that businesses in Indiana have a distinct advantage when it comes to delivering products to their customers by avoiding intermodal friction. Aside from an efficient infrastructure that allows freight to travel smoothly through the state, there is an additional gain in efficiency through Indiana’s collaborative economy and business-friendly regulatory environment. The Hoosier State has earned the reputation as a state that works for business because of its collaborative spirit between the public and private sectors. By working together to arrive at long-term solutions that benefit everyone at the table, Indiana’s regulations and policies have been refined to work at the speed of business. In terms of logistics, it means conditions have been optimized to avoid gridlocks and expenses in areas like customs, zoning, permitting and interagency inconsistencies, all areas that have the potential to slow down even the best transportation infrastructures.

Solidifying those networks of air, rail, maritime and highway to function together as a complimentary system of delivery is just one example of how Indiana works as a family of agencies to keep things moving.

Another advantage to operating in a state that works for business, instead of against it, is Indiana’s ability to lower the overall cost structure. By working together to adopt sound fiscal policies to consistently balance the state budget and retain its AAA credit rating, Indiana has been able to operate in the black and invest inwardly in areas such as infrastructure. While other states are raising taxes and cutting services to compensate for mounting debt, Indiana has actually been lowering taxes and improving services. This not only helps keep the economy moving in Indiana, but keeps it growing. If you’re looking for momentum in the logistics business, lowering business costs is a sure way to keep your company and your products rolling in the right direction.

Indiana’s world-class transportation infrastructure keeps products moving faster and more efficiently, interagency collaboration reduces friction, and a lower cost structure through fiscal strength and security keeps the economy on track to provide long-term profits and sustained business growth. These elements all contribute to building and maintaining momentum, and while other states are struggling to get up to speed, Indiana is gliding along at one of the most efficient and cost-effective trajectories for business in the nation.
